This was by far the most helpful video I've come across so far that addresses how to truly and comprehensively troubleshoot tension issues. There are a million videos that tell you to change your needle, clean your bobbin, and rethread your tension disc. This is for when you have already done those things and still need help!

Yes. I was using some really cheap, junky fabric for practice. I changed my needle, because the last quilt wasn’t the best. Changed the thread to what I needed for another quilt. Had breakage every time I sped up. My bobbin doesn’t like clockwise, so I changed that. Tension was so screwy, well, because I decided to back it up. Just not happy with the stitches. I think I’ve got it back, just about right. Thanks so much for this video. Hope you all got thru the Covid ok. I noticed this is 4 yrs old.

I always use the corner of an index card to clean out under the bobbin tension spring. A metal pin could scratch the case.

I'm a new quilter with a second had Gammill and I have reset everything back to factory setting etc. but I couldn't stop that thread breaking. wanted to add my thanks - I have a new to me long arm and started having thread breaks. This video was exceedingly helpful. I thought I had cleaned my machine really well - I found several thread woolies under the spring in my bobbin case. So many helpful tips.

I was having issues for days with thread breaking- finally found your video and all the things you said I had tried but you brought to mind I hadn't swapped out my Glide foot in almost a year and a half. did that and now I'm back to business

I have been arguing with my machine for WEEKS! I bought new bobbins, bobbin holders, thread, needles….I had the damn needle in backwards!!! You just saved my sanity and my stitches are beautiful!

Thanks for such detailed and helpful tips. A while back I was having thread shredding, talked to the dealer and the manufacturer, my tension was perfect but they were certain 😂that it was the tension. I worked with it for two weeks before discovering a burr in the pigtail, loosened it, turned it around, problem solved. It can be exasperating when you can’t get someone who should know the machines to help locate the problem. Thanks again the video was excellent.

I have a 33 year old Gammill I bought used. I've been quilting with it 20 years. Over those years I've come to think that different colored thread also behaves differently. I don't know if it's the dye or what. Usually adjusting the tension fixes the issue. In my experience I don't have trouble with the cheaper fabrics but Batiks because of the higher thread count can be a thread breaker. Also, for me different batting types can be a problem. Usually tension adjustment, take up roll adjustments or oiling eases problems. For my machine if nothing works the very last thing I check is the Timing. I hate adjusting it if it happens to be off. Luckily over the years it now seems to stay set in place.

Thank you for posting this! I went through each step again... Each step helped a little, but when I cleaned under the bobbin tension, my thread STOPPED breaking!

Greetings, Sioux Falls, SD! LOL!: 'having to "drive" two hours to locate another sewing center, only to find out your "needle" was in correctly. In North & South Dakota, I used to always say, "Want to go anywhere in either state, one has to 'purpose in one's heart' to get to where one wants to go!" (Nothing in North or South Dakota is a quick trip!!!!! 'run out, grab something quick, get home in time to fix dinner; "Nope! It's checking the calander, creating a hole in one's calander--and, expect an 'all day event!!!!! And, finally, when you get home, it's, "Home Again, Home Again, No Bread Baked!")😂

I use a paint stir stick for my bed height

Funny thing...I'd moved my idler bar up so I could use Red Snappers without them dragging on the machine bed. I finally gave up, but never moved the bar back down. Voila! Thread breakage problem solved! Thank you!

If you like the red snappers, Seder quilts channel shows how to load your machine with them that works great for me. Paula Jo uses leader grips but loads the same as the snappers. Hope this will help too.

You seriously saved my sanity! I have struggled all week with these problems, spent time on the phone with Grace, fiddled with tension, cried…you get the picture. I stumbled onto your video, followed the steps you shared and no more issues! I had the tension of my fabric too tight, the fabric off the throat far enough to drive a truck through, my new ruler foot too high and the needle in crooked. While I don’t want to relive this week with my longarm, I learned a wealth of things I didn’t know thanks to you. I have printed your tips and will keep them handy. Wish I lived nearby! Bought my 15R from a big box store where they can’t help but my quilting store doesn’t carry this moderately priced machine. Thank doesn’t seem enough!

How do you adjust the hoping foot if it’s too high or low ?

This is a wonderful video. Suddenly my 14+ doesn't like sewing right to left. Thread keeps shredding and breaking. Any thoughts on that problem? A new one for me.

Video is most informative. I was especially interested in the section about the spritzing the thread with water but did not catch what was in the small bottle that you put drops with the water. Please help.

On the top tension knob...I don't have anything sticking out, there is just a hole with threads there. I have a Q'nique 21 pro that is refurbished and purchased 2 years ago. Is it missing something that goes in this hole?

Can you help with occasional thread knotting on the top fabric? I'm quilting on batik, have changed needles. I have my needle in properly and it only does it occasionally, once or twice per design that I'm stitching. Back stitches are good without any bumps there.

Good morning. Enjoyed your video very much. Thank you. I have a Juki TL 2200QVP Quilt Virtuoso Pro long arm. I have diddled with the tension so much trying to stop the thread shredding that now I can’t get it back to the factory settings. How do you determine what settings your tensions should be on? I am using Glide polyester thread and it will stitch for about 2 minutes and the thread shreds. Have changed needles three times, retreaded numerous times and cleaned everything thing. Help!!!! Thank you in advance.

There are a few things to look at for shredding. First of all, your tension adjustment begins in the bobbin, then the top. Jamie Wallen has an excellent video for that. I have another stitch quality video you should watch as well. Even though it doesn’t deal with shredding directly, if you follow the steps it might fix the shredding as well. I talk about tweaking the needle, quilt height and quilt tension, all of which can affect shredding. Last but not least, if the needle bar height is off, that will shred your thread. We haven’t done a video on making that adjustment yet but it is easy and Gammill has a good video on that. Hang in there, it’s a learning process and it gets easier and fun!

I have same machine. Turn the top tension dial to one or 2 screw threads sticking out- like he mentions in the video. That is near to factory setting. Then follow his video. What happens is you run out of adjustment if you adjust too far in or out on that upper thread tension. Make sure you’re turning the lower tension dial and not the upper one - that higher one is the bobbin tail length. This video is one of the best!!! Thank you- even old dogs need to review basics! Forgot about lint under the outer bobbin spring! Made me look!!!

What do I do if my bobbin doesn't bounce as you suggested? Do I replace the whole bobbin or is there a spring that I can replace

I can't find the information sheet you referred to for skipped stitches
