Long Term Test Predator 9000 Generator Review - Performance Report with Real Numbers

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Long term (2 year) test and performance report on my Predator 9000 (7250 running) Harbor Freight generator. In my other video I showed you how it's hooked up, via a manual transfer switch, to run the entire house, shop/garage, and metal storage building. I also loaded it up with some "exercise" loads to show you what's possible.
You can see that video here.
• No Power... No Problem...
In this video I show you the types of appliances I run during an extended (multi-day) outage, report out on the performance you can expect (run time, hours per gallon), and test the load capability of the 9000 watt generator.
I've owned the generator for almost 2 years now and have just over 78 hours on it. I'm seeing impressive results, way more than the advertised 13 hours of run time!
I have the model 63969 (CA CARB compliant) from Harbor Freight.
Here's a link to the general model.

Thanks for the comment - glad the information was useful! I suspect I get such great mileage as I don't heavily load the generator. Still though, it supports everything I need during an extended outage, with great mileage to boot! Thanks for caring enough about your products to learn more, outside of work too. :-)

The 1st time I used my predator 9000 I only had about 3000 watts hooked to it and that thing ran for 25 hours! Saying I was amazed would be an understatement. I now have it running the entire house, 2600 Sq ft. and it will run for 18 hours, that's with the 3 ton HVAC on. Love that thing 👍🏾

I'm still really happy with it, after 4 years now. My neighbor has the same one and had some fuel related issues, but that was because he didn't treat the fuel and let it go stale. We cleaned the carb and it runs like new again!

⚠️Very important announcements to everyone about generator safety: Please don’t forget to follow the generator safety tips when you use your portable generator. This is just a reminder to make sure. All generator safety instructions need to be followed carefully whenever you use your portable generator. 1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards. 2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2WetpV6fqi0pqw.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators Hope this helps. i have the 7000watt predator. for hurricane laura. i ran it with fridge, freezer, 1 portable a/c unit, 4 blower fans, for 24hrs straight and it burned 15gals a day for 9 days straight. i even made a plug for my dryer and would wash clothes every few days and it handled the washer and dryer at same time no problem with fridge and freezer unplugged. honestly when a disaster hits within a day or 2 gas stations will slowly open back up and the ease of load on stations gets better. so i make sure i have enough gas for few hours at time runtime each day for fridge and freezers for least 3 days worth...and once the stations start opening then its 1 trip a day to gas station. 24hrs runtime for 9 days at 15gals a day dont bother me considering the temps down here was hitting 110degrees...a fan is nice to have during that time

If you expect a storm it’s a good idea to fill your car up with gas/petrol as this is easily siphoned out to use in your generator should you need it it’s also safer to store fuel in your cars tank than cans in your garage/shed. 👍🏻🇬🇧

I have the 8750/7000 model. I've had it for about 7-8 years now. Only problem I've ever had was the rocker switch for the ignition/starter failed this year. Less than $20 on eBay, and a few minutes to change it. I just run a few things in the house with it when the power is out, and I just use a couple of multi outlet extension cords. Starts instantly, and runs great.

Same as you, replaced it with a ~$20 eBay switch and it has worked fine ever since. Biggest pain is that it's glued into place when new... I'll do a short video on that repair, if helpful.

We've had ours for about 2 years and logged about 15 hours of use. Despite the 9000 watt rating I've found it necessary to turn off a few breakers in the fuse panel to avoid over-loading the generator. I also had to go a bit larger on the battery for the electric start to work and am desperate to find a way to make it quieter. I recently noticed the mounting bracket for the handle cracking and apparently that bracket is not to be purchased with out the whole handle kit and Harbor Freight doesn't stock them.

13 hours run time at a % load is usually specified in paperwork or on the box somewhere. it is usually 50% load. which is not terrible. you were probably not running at more than 50% load to get almost a full day of estimated run time... great vid and keep up the work!

⚠️portable generator safety announcements: This is just a reminder to remember the safety rules when using portable generators. Please do not even use your generator in your deck or balcony. Please do not use worn out cords. kzread.infoeFigDfnPkcQ?feature=share and here is a short video more about keeping others safe when using generators Hope this helps

The same applies to my lil sportsman generator, its supposed to run 6.5 hours at half load but I ran it about 10 hours and still had half a tank with little to no load (so if I were just running a laptop + modem etc...) Basically I could run it all day on a gallon of gas... I added 3 USB charging ports to mine also (drill through just below the A on the sportsman logo on the non pull start side and wired straight to the ground on the front panel + my USB charger kit happened to use the same inline fuse holder as the 12V jack on the front so I disconnected that feature I'll never use and now have 3 usb ports). The only thing you need to take loose to do that modification is the side panel and the face panel.... so pretty easy. I got a step drill bit also to make the hole the correct size pretty happy with that for 15min of work.

I live out in the boonies too and have the same generator (no, it will not crank up my 5 hp well pump) and the first thig I did was attaching a spring to the carb lowering the starting rpm from ~3,500 down to 1,000 rpm to let it warm up at ab acceptable speed. I haven't used it yet and just let it run for an hour+ at the lower rpm's and did the 1st oil change as they requested and removed all the stickers all over that poor machine since I can't stand to look at them all the time. I think that it was a good buy and hope not having to use it since I still have a 2,700 W Honda generator for using power tools away from the house or pre-worm my 5.9 L Cummins being away from home in the cold months. Take care and try to stay out of trouble!

I have one of these, it works well and you can run literally everything except electric oven/range/stove and central air. I don't get nearly the economy he is getting maybe 1.5-2hrs per gallon but I am running 3 fridges, a 20 cu ft freezer, an amtrol pressurizer, ceiling fans, my boilers/hot water heater, tv's and a small window AC if it is hot at which point maybe the tank lasts maybe 10-11 hrs. Motor loads hammer it on startup but really the microwave, toaster oven, and coffee maker really seem to hit it hard, you hear it rev when using those.

What's the "running load" it supports? If the label says 8,000 max, I'm guessing the "running load" supported is somewhere around 6,500 watts and, yes, that should be plenty to run basic things (fridge, freezer, tankless water heater (if applicable), lights, charge cell phones, internet, etc. You'd probably have a hard time with A/C units (maybe a small window unit would work) and/or a large all-electric range. If you have a gas stove though, that will help a lot! I think you'll be pretty happy. Keep us posted!

  • @briantday

    @briantday

    3 жыл бұрын

Here's my scientific response; it's pretty darn loud! :-) Seriously though, it can be a bit of a racket after an extended period of time. I keep all the windows closed in the house, and I don't really enjoy doing any work outside, even with it running ~100-150 feet away. It's manageable, but I am thankful when I'm finally able to shut it off! I have noticed that, when I walk around the back side of the metal building it's in, the noise is far more manageable. So, I plan to build a basic sound barrier for it (simple 2x4 framing with some foam panels or something), just to cut the direct noise you hear coming towards the house. I've seen fancier enclosures that people have built too. You need to be careful with those though, not to starve it of fresh air and/or create a fire hazard. To answer your direct question, you could run an RV or shop trailer but I wouldn't want to be sitting less than 20 feet away from this thing for an extended period, without some sort of noise barrier or enclosure. The good news is that it's not a high pitched, variable noise. It's more of a loud, constant droning. I'll try to measure the sound level at ~20 feet away and update you here. When I build a basic sound barrier I'll post the video update on my channel! Thanks for the question Joey.

@@briantday First of all, Thanks for getting back with me timely and thanks for answering my questions. I do wonder if it wasn't in a shop echoing towards your home if that would make any noise difference. I'd it was sitting in a field the same distance from the home I'm sure it might be a bit quieter. All in all as long as you have power for what you need the noise is a small price to pay. Especially if you live in the hot humid south or the freezing cold north having electric is definitely worth the noise in those instances. Thanks again. I look forward to more videos.

  • @briantday

    @briantday

Likewise, thanks Joey. I'll bet you're right; the metal building probably creates somewhat of an "echo chamber." Unfortunately, for me, rolling it out and onto a level open area also means rolling it even closer to the house. Plus, I like having the metal bldg for shelter when it's raining. When I don't use it for many months I start to forget about the noise so it's not as urgent a project. After a day or two of running it for many hours though, I might just elevate that sound barrier project on the priority list! haha. :-)

Propane storage life is indefinite and so much safer than storing gasoline

Get them while you can. Harbor Freight is phasing these out for a new fangled job with a CO sensor and auto stop. $1200. These are just over $700. I've been eyeballing these things for years, but when I saw the price of the new model, I RAN to HF and bought the second to last one they had. On an other note, HF now has a 9500 watt, ultra quiet inverter generator for $2000.

I have a 4000 square foot house and most of the time the entire house is only pulling 2000-2500 watts (when the AC is off and water heater is not cycling on). Also, these big units can power a window AC unit no problem. They also can power a central AC of 1, 1.5, or possibly 2 tons, if you install a capacitor or hard start kit on the unit.

Hi Thomas, thanks for the note. No, these calculations were done after "regular" household loads, over an extended period of time. I'm guessing (based on a few other comments) that the generator was loaded ~50%, otherwise I wouldn't have seen such impressive fuel consumption results. If I had it loaded ~80%-90% I'm guessing I would've seen closer to the advertised 13 hours of run time. I saw much more than that. I was running everything my family typically runs to prepare meals, space heaters, lights, garage, etc. etc. Hope this helps. :-)

E85 is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. Normal pump gas is only up to 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline in some areas. Cant run the E85 on the engine because it will eat all the rubber fuel lines snd gaskets up because of such high ethanol content. Now, if you switched all the rubber out..... maybe it could run on E85, but that's a different story.

Yes and no. The manual says not for sensative electronics. We have this same generator, with over 78 hrs. on it, running our entire house. I installed a Tri-fuel kit to run it off of our homes natural gas. Haven't had any issues with sensative electronics. (flat screen TV's, satellite dish receiver's, cellphones, stereo, frig/freezer, tankless water heater, washer/dryer, internet router, security camera's, central AC, laptops, etc. We do have a 10 and 6 circuit manual transfer switch and use surge protected power strips. I've seen the watts and frequency for our generator and it's not bad at all under load. You have to adjust the idle screw, to be around 63 hertz w/o any load. (Use a wattage usage meter, on one of the 120V outlets, on the generator) Once under load, check the hertz and volts to make sure its between 60 and 62 hertz and 115 to 122 volts. Continue adjusting until you find that sweet spot. (This is what I did)

Something I found and I highly recommend is replacing the oil cap/dipstick with a metal one with a magnet on it. That engine doesn’t have an oil filter and I get a lot of metal “dust” on it. A lot is due to it being a new engine, but still having it float around in there isn’t good. I think for $20 it’ll really help extend it’s life. Yes, good point. My primary take aways was that I don't have to actively "manage" loads, and that my family of four operates everything we need, without even noticing that we're on generator (other than the stove), without having to worry about fuel consumption. I was very happy with that, as I thought I'd be refilling the tank much more frequently.

That's a very good question. Premium gas has more energy per gallon, and often (always???) is ethanol-free (so gas won't absorb water from the air, sink in the tank, and rust it out).

I've used regular low octane pump gas (87 here) and it has been just fine, after 4 years now. I do treat it with Startron for longer term storage (~3-4 months at a time), and also give it a shot of Techron concentrate for good measure. ;-) I do not use higher octane though as, I believe, it still has the same amount of Ethanol in it, and I don't hear this motor pinging (higher octane resists pre-detonation better), so haven't had the need. I'm not positive about the Ethanol comment though, I might be wrong about that, or it's a California thing (Ethanol same level in all octane grades)...

Yeah, possibly. I run everything I need/want to (don't feel like I need to "manage" the load), but my total load (for an extended period of time) might not be substatial. I do hear the motor fluctuate under load, especially when I add the toaster oven and/or microwave. But I've never heard the generator struggle either. I just didn't want to have to carefully shut certain things off, before turning others on. I'm happy that I don't have to think about it!
