Long Term REVIEW | Peak Design 45L Travel Backpack | IS IT COMFORTABLE? | Good for daily carry?

The Peak Design 45L travel backpack is perfect for one bag travel. If you're a digital nomad or planning to travel the world then this is one to consider. Although there are a lot of backpacks designed for long term travel, from companies like Nomatic, GoRuck, Cotopaxi, Osprey and more, the Peak Design 45 liter travel backpack has had a lot of people interested ever since it first appeared on Kickstarter.
In this video I talk about whether or not the back is comfortable or uncomfortable, I point of what I consider to be some of the stand out features of the bag, whether or not you can really use this as a daily carry backpack, and I bring up a couple of reasons why I might actually get rid of it (including talking about the sternum strap and harness design), and look at some alternatives.
Low Drag Lifestyle is about lifestyle design and minimalist travel. If that sounds good then get subscribed, like this video, and leave a comment introducing yourself, I'd love to get to know you!

Great review and insight. I love PD products and how so many of them are fantastic functionally and they look great! For me, the Traveler 45L fell short in one category: fitment-comfort. To be fair to PD, I’m a bigger guy. I have a broader shoulder, a bigger chest, and a mid-section (gut) than the average bear. Also, in fairness to PD, I read before I purchased that the strap comfort was a let a down for some. With all that being said, I gave the PD Traveler 45L a try because of its reputation, the ecosystem I already invested in, and its solid product lineup. Comfort was a real issue for me. I purposely loaded the 45L with a large camera cube and filled the cube with mirrorless camera equipment, minus my 70-200 and 150-600. It contained a few primes (105mm or less), no tripod, and no accessories other than what would fit in the large camera cube. I'm not exaggerating when I say this; the bag hurt my shoulders. The issue with the sternum strap is true. With weight in the bag, the strap pulls the shoulder straps in. I adjusted it up and down, alternating where they pinched between the neck and chest. I tried to alleviate this by using the hip belt. The hip belt was too short. The hip belt that is sold separately for other packs in their line-up has an overall length of 69" so I anticipated the 45L being somewhere in the ballpark of the same length. I was wrong. I needed 48-50" max, and I was short by about 6-8" in length. Because PD uses a non-standard buckle system, there was no chance of purchasing an extender. Again, in fairness to PD, I should have checked with them directly on length because sometimes, depending on the brand, I have found hip belts can be an issue for me. However, more often than not (98%), hip belts are long enough. The bottom line is that if you are a bigger person, the strap and belt system may not fit you well. This is a shame because the pack is a fantastic backpack overall. One of the reasons I chose it is its versatility, AND the bag doesn’t look like I am heading to Mt Everest wearing a mountaineering pack.

Great review and you’ve gained a new subscriber! Ive been using a Tom Bihn bag, they are good for day bags but I’m thinking of selling my larger one for potentially the Aer Travel Pack 2, just noticed that its dimensions seem to not fit some low cost carriers (Ryanair’s etc), so parked it for a bit.

Ryan Air luggage restrictions are annoying! But I think airlines all over the world are becoming like that. Personally, I've found that if it's a backpack and not a suitcase then they usually don't weigh it or check the size. But maybe I've just been lucky! I used to use a Cabin Max Equator which is a pretty big bag and I never had any problems with it.

The nice thing about the PD45L is it’s modular design. If you get multiple cubes, you can organize and setup each cube to contain specific gear. E.g. lighting cube, lens cube, accessories cube etc. What I do not like about this bag is the straps. Once you put more weight to it, it will tear thru your shoulders like butter. It is much better than the Peter McKinnon backpack in terms of weight and modularity. I have brought this bag to multiple destinations. I would recommend the GoRuck Gr2 or Shimoda Explore v2 30 if you are traveling a lot. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for your perspective! I don't carry much camera gear. My main camera right now is a Sony Zv1. I do have a lot of tech stuff though once you include work stuff. Seriously thinking of trying the Go ruck, partly because they describe their laptop compartments as 'bomb proof' and that's definitely what I want!

I think the point of the hip straps is that they're supposed to take the most of the weight and have it rest on the hips and off the spine. Similar to how backpackers do with their big back packs. The shoulder and sternum straps are supposed to be there for balance. But I guess it depends on how the hip straps fit. Great review, thank you!

I really appreciate the long term real world review. The one thing that’s keeping me from picking this as my travel pack / digital nomad pack is the comfort. Overall opinion from reviewers: not comfortable. Good point, too - “is my very expensive backpack uncomfortable? Is it a bad backpack?”

With a 2015 osprey Porter 46 as my bag of choice for years, I now want and demand a fully comfortable hip strap. It's simply not an option if you are doing real travel that requires walking, exploring and taking public transport. Why torture yourself so that the straps can look cool one close with a magnet? No way. Now, if you are doing "middle of the road travel" (neither high end nor hardcore exploring) and are just getting off the plane, getting into a cab and checking in your room for a week, this is fine. It looks professional, is organized etc. The greatest unwinnable challenge designers are dealing with is trying to be all things to all people.. It's not really possible. You need a slim, black professional looking bag for short business trips ideally. You need a rugged explorer bag for nomadic extended adventure travel that can pack a lot and feel good to walk with. Like a Porter but with a good hip strap, which it does not have. Hardcore hikers need a hiking bag(not my thing). Luxury or vacation travel to the resort only requires a suitcase and a day bag for shopping.

You are spot on with this review. I've been traveling with this pack since 2017 and I've come across the same issues with the sternum strap. The shoulder strap and hip padding should be a bit more spongy. It's not uncomfortable but it's not truly comfortable. I've never used the "30L snap" feature. I do love the security features. I've learned to under-pack it and it feels great. I don't have to carry laptop or camera equipment otherwise this would be burdensome. I'm keeping it and will only replace if the Holy Grail Travel Backpack present itself.

I am currently considering this one for a slimmed down carry-on and daypack vs the Nya Evo 36C which I use on bigger aircraft and for long hikes. The Nya Evo has a fantastic hip strap and super padded straps, but it is about 8cm more bulky in depth than the PD which is now a problem as I have a trip coming up to northern norway on smaller aircraft... I won't be actually wearing the backpack for longer periods of time so the hip support and padded straps hopefully won't become an issue... I do need the bottle pockets, I have a Sigg 1.5L bottle and a 24 oz coffee mug with me at all times. so this backpack does sound like a good option. Thanks for your review!

I feel like many of the reviews miss that this is supposed to be a camera bag for people with DSLR or Mirrorless plus several lenses, filters, spare batteries, filters and a tripod, and also want some room for non camera gear. The alternative I have now is 2 backpacks, and that's a huge pita even with car travel, and I think if you're not doing that a lot of the features don't make sense. It's probably designed for you wearing it a couple of hours, with you setting up for pictures for an hour or more in between. I can tell it's not a dedicated hiking bag.

Any backpack that is fully loaded is going to feel heavy no matter how much padding there is. That’s what the hip and sternum straps are for, to take the weight off of your shoulders. I’m glad Peak Design didn’t over pad the straps. They’re just the size they need to be and they tuck away nicely.
