Long Run Archives #15 | Black Canyon 100K Recap, Golden Ticket Outlooks, Doping In Trail Running

Спорт

Brett Hornig, Jeff Colt, and Corrine Malcolm join Singletrack to riff on the latest news in the ultra-trail running world.
In this conversation, we share our takeaways from the 2024 Black Canyon 100K, talk about the entirety of the Western States 100 golden ticket series including some early takes on the Canyons 100K race later this spring, and spend the rest of the time talking about the implications of Stian Angermund’s positive doping test after last year’s UTMB-OCC race, which was revealed earlier this month.

    Loved this one. Also heavily agree with the opinions regarding the need for careful contextualization of positive doping tests. Let’s have as much empathy as possible for all athletes and refrain from condemnations until malice is proven. This sport is so on the fringe of doping testing legitimacy that we need the empathy to keep the sport healthy for everyone. If these is ever a governing body and consistent implementation of testing for elites, then maybe we can raise pitchforks over positive tests. Until then, let’s all show grace until people don’t deserve it.

    BC100k was such a great experience, but for those of us who aren't 30, 130lbs, and still made of baby shark cartilage, the conditions were sneaky out there. Summary for 90% of the field: If you didn't lose a shoe in the mud of miles 2-9, and didn't get sapped for energy because of that, it was hard to balance the energy costs (HR/TL/effort), to then do "OK" on the mesa drop singletrack, save some for the minor climbs out of bumble bee, and deal with the pretty sandy high water crossings, final climbs to Table Mesa with gunfire on both sides for hours, AND retain enough ankle/calf strength for the last 20+ miles of "Nuthin' but deez ROCKZ" - the weather was perfect, however, but hundreds of folks were surprised by how wild, technical, and rugged sections were. And that last water crossing? High, fast, in a little notch-box passage with high flow nearly swept a few people away. A wild day, with more people running longer at night than they expected. Happy as hell to have finished. ALSO - KUDOS to Brett for the podium at the 60k Sunday!

    This is why I advocate for closed professional starts at major events like golden ticket, WSER, UTMB WS, WTM. The pros have direct access to the start line without needing a shuttle. Just because they can adjust on the fly doesn’t mean it’s the best for competition. It was an unfair advantage for those who received the delayed notice vs those that arrived at 7am.

    Great episode! Thanks for always bringing insightful commentary. On the doping topic, I want to believe the athletes. I also wanted to believe Floyd Landis when he won the TdF. And Tyler Hamilton. These guys had a clean image and tons of excuses at first for why the system was flawed. Landis wrote a book about it. Hamilton suggested the result was due to a chimeric twin phenomena. They were adamant that they were innocent. Until they weren’t. Not even talking about Armstrong here. He was next level in his conjecture and attacks. Until he wasn’t. The tests are so rarely wrong. I want to believe the athlete but I’ve been let down so many times. These guys ruined professional cycling for me. But the Addie Bracy/WSER situation seems harsh. Kudos to Corrine for wrestling with this issue. Somebody go help her out. Thanks again for the awesome episode.

    On the doping subject - we need a centralized regulatory body for all of the reason stated. Money is not the only incentive for someone to dope, and this sport is now competitive enough that there ARE people doping whether for ego, money, fame, or whatever else - assuming no one is doping is just naive based on literally every other endurance sport's history. At the same time I don't want to see every exceptional performance with a suspicion of doping. Knowing that the athletes are tested to the same level as other sports would let me appreciate those performances more.

    Speaking of expanding the Golden Ticket races to include international races, kind of ironic that an American (Jim W.) wins the Roubion-Nice 115k at Nice Côte d’Azur by UTMB to secure a Golden Ticket. Thanks for the wonderful discussion.

    Great episode as usual! I do think you all were a bit generous with Stian though (and I understand the reasoning). Sure there's always a possibility that he's innocent, but the chances that chlorthalidone was in a contaminated supplement is about as much as Shelby Houlihan ate a contaminated burrito. Sure it sucks for the sport, and sure he seems like a great guy, but the sport is growing rapidly and money is involved, so we need a way to get a system for year round testing in place sooner rather than later...if we want the sport to continue to grow and still maintain its simple purity. Whether it comes from brands, race registration costs, or a billionaire ultrarunner, it's got to get done. This won't be the last person to get caught.

    It’s funny, I’m in between viewpoint. I guess I wanna as a spectator. I want to have as many possible superfast elites in a race just to make the day exciting but as an average runner sometimes below sometimes above. I wanna make sure as many of us common people can enter these races you know as possible knowing that you know yeah my time will probably be about double the guy in first place but especially now it’s getting ridiculous but there is a thing that kind of worries me that these races are gonna turn into, especially the big races that your local races are just gonna turn into superstar, elite, festivals, and media kind of things and common people are gonna have harder and harder trouble getting into a big race one of the things I love about running is I can get on the start line with some super fast person maybe not standing right next to him, but I’m running the same races they are and that’s really cool

    The benefit of the doubt being given to Stian is naive at best. Everyone agrees that trail running has a potential doping issue in the abstract, but when an athlete who absolutely dominated the sub-ultra and short ultra scene last year tests positive for a masking agent, we are supposed to believe it was because his multivitamin was contaminated? Occam's razor cuts the other way.

    Burden of proof falls on the athlete? Not really...you are innocent until a doping test shows you are guilty of something. Let's not inverse the roles here please. Though effectively accused as of now rather than guilty yet.

  • @03bruisercat

    @03bruisercat

    Good point. I think she means that once accused through a positive test, the burden is on the athlete. In other words, the positive test creates a rebuttable presumption of guilt.
