I did this 45 years ago. This was longlining for many small operations. The really good old guys would haul, wind and hang the hook on the side of the bucket as fast as it came in. The main line was high quality tarred cotton. The stick is for when the boat is slow. It flings in a zig zag, keeping more line on good grounds. Netters do that too.

I was hake fishing on the Long Island shore about the time this was filmed. We would run 5 tubs of close gear, hooks about 28 inches apart, and let it set no more than a half hour before we started hauling it back. Most of the sets were for 4 to 5 thousand lbs. of hake and cod. We didnt run by hand tho we used a sluce.

This is how we shot long lines back in the day when i first started fishing .dangerous way to do it but it worked just watch out for flying hooks. And sometimes the line tangeled and jerked the whole tub overboard.oh yeah sometimes you would catch a seagull or albatross. Sometimes alot of them and when that happens you catch sharks.lol vicious cycle.

the byproduct catch seems excessive, esp when you just rip the hook out of them

so? I don't think the date makes any difference, the guys in the film are idiots, all you need is a piece of sewer pipe, two 3-4 foot pipes(PVC or steel) and some zip ties and you have a chute. I see no reason why you wouldn't have something other than a stick to set your gear.....
