They don't have some elaborate scouting team searching all over the state for talented players that are willing to transfer all the way to Long Beach to run track or play football. They just have a good coaches who know how to develop athletes. In high school, successful programs are mostly the reflection of the coaching staff.

This is just a small era for teams like Mater Dei. Prior to 2017, the last time Mater Dei had won a southern section championship was 1999. Most good programs have their ups and downs.
