When the director Peter Berg was making this movie, he met with the families of the three fallen SEALs. When he met Danny’s father, he said that he took Berg up to Danny’s old room and handed him a piece of paper. Berg realized this was the autopsy of Danny from the military. Danny’s father told him “my son was shot in the left ankle, he was shot in the right calf, in the right thigh, in the groin, he was shot twice in the stomach, he was shot twice in the throat, he was shot three times in the head.” And as he read this paper Berg said they both began to cry, and Danny’s father said, “that’s who my son was. That’s how tough my son was. You make sure you get that right.”

After the war, to help deal with PTSD, Luttrell was given a therapy dog he named Dasy for his teammembers initials. One day some punk kids shot his dog in the middle of the night for no reason and he chased them for miles before cops stopped them. That story became the inspiration for the movie John Wick

What's crazy about Marcus is that after he recovered from his injuries, he went back to active duty and was deployed back to Afghanistan. You should react to Marcus speech where he list the severity of his injuries.

In RL when Mike Murphy climbed out on that rock ledge to make that call, he was screaming for Marcus to come help him, but Marcus said he couldn't get to him so he covered his ears so he didn't hear his friend die. Marcus said when Ax was hit by the RPG he was tossed through the air and he never saw him again after that. Which later on when they came back for the bodies, they found him about 200 feet from where he was hit by the RPG.

I remember watching this movie at home when it come out to rent. I was like 15. Uncle is a Navy vet as an E.O.D. I watched the entire thing without shedding a tear. Until the credits rolled. I balled my eyes out quietly for a solid 20 mins. Intense movie. My uncle told me got to meet Marcus and I just thought how meaningful that must’ve been.

U can see lots of Marcus Lutrell shorts, here. Other true type or True story movies are saving Private Ryan, 13 hours, Lone Survivor, hacksaw Ridge, Once we were Soldiers, Blackhawk Down,1917, Dunkirk, Thin Red Line, Unbroken Big Red One, Hamburger Hill, American sniper. This direct is Peter Berg. A decent actor but a real eye for true story movies. Check out Deepwater Horizon, and I think he also did, The Perfect Storm. He is now in Congress!😮. SOAR chopper pilots....truly as good as it gets. They are asked to do the impossible, as routine. I was in 1st Ranger Battalion. Typically we are backup for any missions involving seals, Delta, SF, things like that.

I respect Murphy for trying to show compassion for human life and not killing the herders. What a tough decision as you know letting them go runs a great risk obviously but killing 2 kids and an old man just didnt seem like the choice either and he figured tying them up and leaving them there in the cold at night and animals, was the same as putting a bullet in their head plus the worry of potential court martial if they were found out. Best thing in hindsight, was take them with you a good distance then let them go as you get a safe distance from the town where shah was located with his men, then send them on their way back as you get nearer to the extract location. Great movie but to see the taliban having control of it today, makes you say wtf did all these americans die here for only to see the taliban in charge today. Just sickens me.

The beginning of the movie is footage of BUD/S 234 class. If you want to know more about Mike you should read the book "SEAL of Honor". They didn't fight 200,300 fighters but definitely more than 12,13 like people say. After the bird got hit by the RPG, a few rangers were sent out for casualty recovery and hostage rescue (Marcus) and there were definitely a lot of Taliban there and they were holding out in the village until air support and the marines arrived to relieve them. There is a lot of small crazy details did not get mentioned in the movie but was mentioned in the books (Lone survivor, SEAL of honor), Mikey was screaming for help but Marcus was not able to do anything because they were pinned down and i think Axe was already separated with Marcus. The villager who saved Marcus was a doctor in the village and they actually stayed in there for many days before the rescue team arrived (the rescue mission went for 2 weeks instead of a day like they planned) and i, the doctor was threated by the Taliban and it took a hell lot of work to make the US government to finally brought that guy here. Side story, Marcus's twin brother is also a SEAL too and i think there was a pair of twin brothers also graduated in class 300. Murphy's BUD/S class was also crazy, he was on the football team in Penn State and was going into laws like his dad, he changed his mind and trained for an year and went into navy to be a SEAL, he only had one chance because he is an officer (enlisted guys get 3 tries), he broke his leg and had a nasty infection but he lasted few more days before they pulled him out (didn't count as fail since it's medical issue) and he almost lost his leg. He then re-enter hell's week for the next class and passed. I had the honor to meet a lot of team guys and be a friend with few of them. Met few of the guys from team 6 when i was a high school kid summer working in Virginia Beach but sadly they passed away during the 2011 Chinook crash. Some of the greatest people you can meet.

Operation redwings had multiple things fail like when the SEALs were being dropped offed they were compromised by locals which told the taliban which made the taliban hunt them down. They ignored the advice of the Marines (who the poached the mission from) to bring more powerful radios because the Marines knew that communication wasn’t great out there. Instead of being dropped off from a distance than walking to their target they got dropped off close to the target location which made them compromised easier (they tried to to false inserts through out the week to trick the locals but that made the locals know that a mission was going to happen soon). The ropes they used to fast rope per norm were disconnected to the helicopter they came in, but the SEALs failed to hide the rope which the locals found when they went to go to investigate which confirmed Americans were there. Realistically they were fighting about about a local number of 12 taliban fighters not the huge amount you see. The fight was quick, and not drawn out like in the movie so the SEAL team was killed pretty quick. It’s one of those missions that should’ve been called off, and they should’ve been picked up when they were compromised.

100%. I recently read a book called Victory Point that went into great detail about this op and all these points were covered thoroughly. Really unfortunate this all happened.

If this story is true Marcus Luttrell is the whole reason his team is dead. I was in thecArmy for 8 years and I can tell you I would not have Luttrell in my foxhole. Why people celebrate a man who got his whole team killed I will never know.

I got the same impression. At least was an influence in that decision.

All because the kid hurried down the mountain as fast as he could and told the taliban about them period whatever else you think is crap.

When the director Peter Berg was making this movie, he met with the families of the three fallen SEALs. When he met Danny’s father, he said that he took Berg up to Danny’s old room and handed him a piece of paper. Berg realized this was the autopsy of Danny from the military. Danny’s father told him “my son was shot in the left ankle, he was shot he was shot in the right calf, in the right thigh, in the groin, he was shot twice in the stomach, he was shot twice in the throat, he was shot three times in the head.” And as he read this paper Berg said they both began to cry, and Danny’s father said, “that’s who my son was. That’s how tough my son was. You make sure you get that right.”
