London to Edinburgh Time Lapse - Entire Length of A1 - Part 4 of 4

Ойын-сауық

A time lapse of my whole 410 mile journey from London to Edinburgh along the entire length of the A1. Also known as the Great North Road, the A1 is the longest single-numbered road in the UK.
Part 4 -- the final stretch from the Angel of the North at Gateshead, to the end of the A1 at Princes Street in central Edinburgh. Plus a quick detour around Holyrood Park in Edinburgh!
Music removed and replaced due to copyright issues. Was previously "Young Blood" by The Naked and Famous, and "Hoppipolla" by Sigur Ros.
Filmed on Saturday 19th May 2012. I used a Brinno TLC200 time lapse camera mounted to the passenger seat using a Gorillapod. The camera took 1 photograph every second, and produced a film played back at 20 frames per second.
Through rain and shine, city, town and countryside, it's London to Edinburgh in a reasonably priced car!

Great video. I recognise some of the roads from a trip I did 2 years ago, from Dingwall to Billingham -also in a reasonably priced Kia :)

I needed to remove the music for copyright reasons unfortunately. But on this video it seems to have left strange traces of the original sound still there!

+Cazkumali I doubt the part north of Tyne and Wear will be any time soon. In Yorkshire it will all be motorway soon.

Most of the road in Scotland is already essentially motorway. Between Dunbar and Edinburgh it's entirely grade-separated although it's classified as a "special road”. The only real difference is that it lacks hard-shoulders. Dunbar to the border is roughly ~20 miles and there's at least three sections of that dualled, so it's probably only 12 or so miles that need to be done there. Transport Scotland have said that they intend to dual all of that and I believe as is the case with the much more ambitious (Perth to Inverness) A9 dual carriageway project, the A1 will be grade-separated too. I can't speak for England but I go down the A1 about once a year and it seems like they're always upgrading some part of it. As you can see in these 4 time-lapse videos though, it's an abysmal road and there's a lot of it that needs to be upgraded. As for the section north of Newcastle, my understanding is there has always been some inertia around the idea because of the perceived lack of benefit relative to cost. I believe (could be wrong) that road management in England is subject to a complicated mixture of local authority and central government (as Highways England) control, whereas in Scotland the whole thing is managed nationally by Transport Scotland which is an agency of the Scottish Government.
