It goes slow so everyone can get some sleep just a meander along through the night...if you travel from Cornwall for a long hall flight next day this is the best way to go.. There is an overnight coach by national express but to rest on that is a nightmare you're sitting next day in Heathrow worn out untidy disheveled while all around you are fresh awake people. Going up to London staying overnight is an extra cost so the sleeper is for CORNWALL. supported by Cornwall council and is not really for London travellers as most videos on KZread seem to think. Obsessed with London- penzance!.

I am totally fascinated by train travel! The first stories I heard about long-haul train travel were from my father and grandmother. They traveled from Zagreb, Yugoslavia across to Paris and on to the coast where they boarded the Empress of Britain. They embarked this great ship to cross the Atlantic, first landing in Quebec City then taking the train to Montreal, Toronto and on to Windsor, Ontario. An epic journey for all!

I think when I'm actually allowed to go places again I'd like to do a sleeper trip via train. It seems like such a lovely way to travel. You can get up and walk around, it wouldn't be as noisy as an airplane and you can just lay back and read a book or watch the world go by. Sounds lovely!

The atmosphere at stations and on the train isn't British - it's English (until you cross the River Tamar into Cornwall/Kernow) and the two are very different! A bit like saying stations and trains in Catalonia have a Spanish atmosphere!

The heavily-lossmaking Caledonian Sleeper service, between London and five destinations in Scotland (Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Fort William, Glasgow and Inverness) is still running. From next Spring the forty-year old Mark 3 Sleeper carriages will be replaced with brand-new Mark 5 rolling stock from Spain, with many compartments having en-suite facilities.

The problem is that there is hardly any population centre in the UK that is not less than 8 hours' drive away from anywhere else. The point of a sleeper is the journey, and not the destination. I once had to go to a wedding in the Czech Republic. After consulting airline timetables, then railway schedules, and finally the AA road website, I found that the Czech Republic wedding was only just further away than Inverness, and quicker, cheaper, and easier, to get to by car (and more of an interesting drive).

Train from Paddington stops at Exeter for a few hours, so you are looking at about 8hrs journey overall. I live a mile from Penzance station but work in London during the week, used to take the old sleeper train, which was tired and noisy, and not very comfortable, but all that seems to have changed. My view from home is that of St Michaels mount which you see towards the end of the video, I only live a short walk from the beach, and the train runs parallel to the beach path to finish at Penzance station. Lots of beautiful views daily, weather can be a bit 'brisk' in Winter given what living by the sea brings you, but you really need to come visit and get some 'sea air' and take in the sights.

I've lived in Cornwall for the last 22 of my 53 years. A lot of people love the idea of living here but there have been plenty gone back because the job situation down here is poor and they aren't prepared to sacrifice money for lifestyle. The upside is you can go to the beach out of season when there's no one there and it's then that Cornwall is at it's best. Come in May or June as July or August it can get very rainy. It's cheaper and the weather in usually better.

Sliding doors mean you can have anything in the wall in that space. I suspect there is a lot of wiring etc. in that space on both sides of the door which has to be there (lights over the beds, switches, etc.).

In the UK train travel is reasonably cheap if you can book your ticket well in advance of your journey and/or hold one of the various Railcards which gives a 34% discount off the list price.

  • @TheBaldr

Even in the most developed train countries in the world, it still cheaper to fly past 400km than high speed rail. (Fly gets exponentially cheaper compared to rail past 400km) The US is so big that there are so few places that 400km would properly serve with rail.

ksmith610 The reason why rail travel in the USA is not like Europe is because rail travel just doesn’t make money because rail travel is slower and not as efficient as air travel is. The truth is that Amtrak is a money loser just like lite rail is in most cities. Passenger trains are very expensive to operate and simply don’t have enough riders to generate revenue New airlines pop up all the time because of the demand. You don’t see that with rail travel. Amtrak should be entirely privatized or go out of business.

@@olentangy74 good points and our rail lines are mostly owned by Freight railroads save for Northeast Corridor which is owned by Amtrak Washington Union Station to New Rochelle Metro-North station Metro-North and state of Connecticut owned to New London then Amtrak to Providence RI that's where Massachusetts commuter rail the T owns it all the way to Boston South Station from Providence Rhode Island.
