Sadly in 2022 people like Scase are still going in all walks of life, but fortunately people still have the lion's attitude like Sidney Tate

This really is incredibly good character acting by the guy who played Bulstrode. He had a relatively minor part but the fact he's so watchable is testament to his quality. Love the chemistry in this scene.

Gareth Thomas was his name - he had a natural charisma to him as well as a long history of playing authority figures on television, or at least people who looked like they were in charge and you felt you could trust them (Blake's 7, Knights of God, Stocker's Copper, Morgan's Boy, etc.) - and one of the last true TV badasses.

Sidney gets a very affectionate telling off from Bulstrode. Mere lip service really because Bulstrode knew he'd taken the right action. A total contrast to what Bulstrode said about him in the pub in front of everyone when Sidney was medically retired. "Sheer bloody professionalism"

I remember the story line. Bulstrode's successor put Scase in charge of the fire HQ car park. I wonder how the likes of Scase got into the fire service when he obviously had such a dislike for people.

Scase (I don’t think)dislike d firefighters(As he was an ordinary fireman once & went through the same pains & strains(In basic-training:-)as the other fire-fighters. Scase was a man on a power-trip and he was obsessed with power and control, over others and hated Blackwall as they didn’t respect his authoritarian-nature. In comparison with Tate,it went both ways with Nick & Sydney.

@@beasleycourt8873 Yes, but the fire service (London, Toronto, New York or anywhere) is an organization that requires discipline and respect for the chain of command. Right or wrong, junior members just can't override their superiors at a scene. That's why Bulstrode was really upset. He *knew* that Tate was correct about his assessment of the rescue, but he was wrong to override Scase. He told Scase flat out that he screwed up by not having the confidence of his subordinates.

Tate lasted 3 seasons. Zorba lasted 8 seasons, nearly 3 times as many. I don't know for a fact what the reason is that Tate failed his medical, but I know I've seen him behave in the same manner as Bulstrode above, possibly worse, and I put it down to that playing a large part, if not solely the reason, for failing the medical. I've posted to one other user a few comments below, to regularly shout increases blood pressure which is not healthy. If Tate wasn't a dinosaur (in the literal sense), I'd like to think he'd have lasted a few more seasons. It's hard; I like Tate too, and I like Bulstrode. But it was brilliant when ACO Baxter reprimanded Scase. When he said Bulstrode was compassionate with firefighters, I got it, but I just don't remember seeing it that much; then again, it's not like he appeared regularly. It's almost like he put Scase below Tate and Bulstrode's league, but sometimes I think Scase was in the same league as them, and that Scase lasted longest out of pride. Don't ever be a dinosaur, it's not worth it and the pride won't do you any good.
