I was a driver at Kingston garage when Jill (who had been a conductress) trained to become a driver. She was very well liked by all who knew and worked with her. Sadly she died quite young.

Up until 1974 the only women employed on London Transport's buses were either conductresses or cleaners. As the Routemasters had power steering and semi-automatic gearboxes fitted many women were seen at the wheel of these London icons. There's a charming young lady called Rebecca who drives the RMs on Heritage Route 15 and she loves her job as she always smiles when people take photos of the bus she drives. That's how it should be.

We got our first woman driver at Streatham (Esther) in 1976. I was her conductor on a few occasions, and some people actually stood back and refused to get on the bus when they saw who was driving. How things have changed

Heard of similar when the first female tube driver was hired...seemed odd as who looks at the driver on the tube? Though I guess the publicity and press o platform would have given it away
