I have a friend who always seems to be painting a room of her house. I swear she changes the paint color roughly three times a year, but she tells me not... For her, it's not problem - painting is easy. For me... I dread alll the prepping and taping and gathering supplies and so on, though I guess just slapping on the paint wouldn't be too hard. I'd still rather have someone else do all that professionally than tackle it myself. I grew up in a family of contractors, painters and decorators and had to 'lend a hand' (but was never allowed actually to DO a job), growing up, and I hated it. On the other hand, I have no problem scrubbing a flat from top to bottom on moving in or moving out. And moving in - unpacking all the boxes and putting everything in its place - energizes and inspires me. I guess it's just the jobs you like (my friend who paints dreads and drags her feet over cleaning and always leaves it until her house looks like a tornado hit it) and the jobs you don't like that make them seem 'hard.'

Decorating, if you mean accessorizing rooms and putting things where they look right's pretty easy ane enjoyable. But if you mean renovataing-painting, plastering, changing wall fixtures, short of structural changes- for most people that IS work, especially witn no reall experience. Painting is a mess, for one thing, and if you're using oil-based paints, it can be quite nightmare to keep it off the things around you, including your skiin and clothes. I liked doing it when I was younger, and painted nearly every apartment I ever moved in to. Made the place feel fresh and new. But living in a construction zone is no fun.

Two bedrooms for infant twins seems a doubly high expectation... While i do absolutely love a turnkey house below budget, i can see the potential in cluttered houses in need of substantial work. Personally, before ruling out the 2nd flat, I would have gotten an estimate of how much it will cost and how long the work will take and then try to get it for way below budget. It had great potential being a down floor flat with a garden. I don't know if the location was ideal though.

I'm curious about that first one with three stories: if the kitchen is on the ground floor and the living room is on the first floor, that seems to leave three bedrooms and the bath room on the top floor. The kitchen didn't look big enough to take up space for three bedrooms and a bath so what else is on the ground floor? If there's a bedroom down there, maybe the place could be opened up into a kitchen, diner, living room and the living room above could be turned into a bedroom to make up for it. Or, if it's big enough, a bedroom and small, adult, snug. Just a thought. We didn't see enough of that one to figure it out.

@@happydays1336 Maybe he was in the midst of it. In any case, good luck getting an appointment and treatment paid for by the NHS. One Saturday morning in Poland I tripped and fell and knocked out most of my front teeth. I was in a dentist's office within two hours. Two hours after that, she had rebuilt my teeth. I went home and apart from some scratches on my face, nobody had any idea that I had had an accident and had had my two front teeth rebuilt from the time I left home til the time I returned. Nobody ever noticed any change and only a few people even know that my two front teeth are not my natural teeth - because I told them. The cost was about 75 pounds. There's no way I could have got into a dental surgery in the UK on a Saturday, without an appointment. I would have gone around with jaggedly broken front teeth for months in the UK instead of hours. I have a UK-born friend whose parents were born in Poland. She regularly flies over to Poland to get health-care privately because it's pointless trying to get an appointment on the NHS before you die of whatever affliction you have. There have been three times in the past 20 years when going to Poland for care saved my friend's life. She was either misdiagnosed in the UK or put off for months and months while her condition got worse (unable to go to work and unable to get to a doctor to get a diagnosis or medical certificate), or simply dismissed as her problem being "all in her head" (when urgent-care the monitors were showing a potentially fatal rapid heart-beat and sky-high blood pressure; a Polish doctor gave her a proper examination and found a life-threatening heart anomaly). Forget about dental care: she goes to Poland and takes her daughter to Poland because she can get an appointment within the next few days and she can get all the care she needs, not just basic services and being sent away to just live with the problem. It's quite possible that the only care the NHS dental service will give is yanking out your bad teeth. (Have you ever SEEN British people's teeth? Kirstie is a rarity.)

you'd think that the owners/tenants of the 2nd property that James was shown would have cleaned up the place a bit before a showing (especially a showing that would be seen on national tv)..especially that kitchen with the dishes piked in the sink...yikes

You have to be careful with ex council. That flat could be an ex council but others may still be. I live in a high rise with private lease holders, council and housing association tenants. The building is a 60’s 20 story with a number of issues. If you buy a flat which would be better value than non council you’d think wow what a bargain. That is until you get hit with massive fees for essential works. When essential you have no choice but to cough up.

Let me put it this way: I wish these duck hunters weren't always dealing with sitting ducks... I personally would move away from that silly little bully of a so-called lady... leaving her sort of stranded. Know what I mean, mate? But of course I do know that suckers always abound, don't they? Seemingly especially in the (post Brexit) UK, seamingly at least. But as I always say... fool always rush in!
