This was my 1st marathon at 63 and I was incredibly nervous to the point of almost being sick before the start. I was in red 13 and it seemed such a long way to get up the hill! Luckily I got there early and had time to calm down. I've never been surrounded by so many runners which triggered my anxiety and took a lot of effort to stay focused in my own bubble. However, I was just not prepared for the impact the crowd have on you as a runner. Having thousands of people shouting your name as you run past them gives you such a boost and they go mental if you wave back. Running in the sun was quite warm, but otherwise, the wind was bitingly chilly and I was so cold that my back went into spasms around Canary Wharf and I had to powerwalk for a bit. But with so many people calling out my name I felt I simply could not let them down and I just pushed on and got in only 15mins over my A time, so well pleased overall!

Amazing Sarah, congratulations! You came past me around mile 23 and I’d say you guys started a little too far back - It’s so hard to get through that tide of runners coming back towards you in the latter miles. I’d recommend being a bit more ambitious with your predicted time next time and you’d be surprised how those crowds running a similar pace carry you along. See you in Malaga - We’re race twins this year! 🤩

I cannot say enough how much you guys have inspired me during my recent 5 year stint with injuries. And now in a month, I will run my first race marathon in 10 years. Clawing and scratching my way back. Watching you every week has been so inspirational, a godsend. Will be doing a very long run tomorrow on my own. Let's see how far I come. Doctors told me it was just stupid fantasies to believe I would ever run a marathon again (fourth severe injury). Then a month ago or so, I had my first pain free run in 5 years. Did 25 km just like that and have not looked back since. Whether I make it next month or not, I am not sure. But I know it is only a matter of time. It will happen. I am forever in your debt. Thanks a million.

If it’s .9 I’ll round up but anything less I don’t bother. I’m with Sarah on this that London was the hardest marathon I’ve ever done. The crowds were too much for me, I craved quiet stretches. Whilst I’m sure they enabled some to run faster they caused me to run slower. Well done Sarah.

I ran it in 2023, I had a nightmare! The train broke down in Canary Wharf and ended up having to walk under the Thames to cutty sark, came out of the tunnel and like you said it was rammed! No one had any idea which way I needed to go to get to the start and I couldn’t cross to the other side! So I ended up with the help of my husband and spectators I jumped over at the ship and started my race there. Once I ran past Canary Wharf I ended up running up and down the road were the two roads meet until I added an extra 10k then carried on 😂 obviously not the way I wanted it to go but I was determined to complete it! Never got in his years but hoping to get in in 2025! Well done Sarah!!!

Can't wait to see Sarah's LM2024 video, I've loved following your training. It was my second marathon (I did LM 2023), which I went into with injuries. Congrats Sarah. I was at Greenwich as well, red wave 2 :). All my club mates were over at Blue :P. Makes sense now Rick says it’s a rarer starting location. Was my first London marathon. Those crowds were insane! Gave so much energy (I’ve been describing it like football players talk of the fans giving them that lift). Bit of a danger to it though, as it’ll drive you to go to fast for to long if you let it. It took me conscious effort to pull back and even add some walk breaks, so that I could enjoy the day and finish well. Was always very easy to get back going again though :). Anyway, great to see you smashed a PB, well done! :)

Well done Sarah. You talked about rounding your runs. Back in the early 80s, we only had a stop watch so we knew from others say oh round.the Park is about a mile for our warm ups and then count our track sessiond to work out how far we run. Another way to tell how far for.me.was take out a ordinance survey map and a piece of string and go over the routs you ran and then measured it on the key Miles at the bottom. Then the other way was if I can run an easy Mile in 8 mins and then work out how far I'd run.

Can't wait to see the marathon video! And for next year, I would suggest you try Rotterdam marathon. It has an insanely good atmosphere! And since it's a smaller, non-capital city organising the biggest/most famous marathon in the country, you really feel how the marathon is in the city's DNA and how much it lives throughout the weekend, as the city swells with visitors from all over. Plus, it's a fast course, and a 3 hour direct train away from London.

Congrats to Sarah for the new PB and good discussion on the experience. At 25:00 you are discussing HR zones. I don't think your HR zones are correctly setup. Zone 4 roughly starts with Lactate threshold and elite athletes can hold 1:00-1:30 in this zone. You being in zone 4 about 2hrs and 1:40hrs in zone 5 is extremely unlikely. Marathon race mostly stays in Zone 3 (tempo). Past LTHR you are going anaerobic and lactate starts to build and acidosis is inevitable. If you based your zones in Age (which uses 220-age) that is garbage formula which is wrong for a lot of people. Your maxHR is probably higher. The best way to set your zones is actually doing a lab test to determine your lactate threshold and base your zones on that or at least do a Garmin Guided Lactate threshold test (chest strap required)

If I run 5.3, I'll go 5.5, but if i run 5.5, I'll stop rather than go 6. That said, I don't usually set out to run any quarter or half miles. It's usually just a run of unfamiliar new courses that I end up having to run extra.

And are the usual definitions of zone 4 and zone 5 that 4 is threshold (1hr race pace) and 5 is vo2max (20min race pace). How can we be running 2hr zone 4 then 1h40 in Z5 and not be questioning whether the zones or monitor are realistic.

London is exceptionally noisy to the point that it is headache-inducing. It is great to have so many people cheer everyone, even runners they don't know! But it can also be overwhelming - Andy is right, there is so much to think about, that it feels you don't have the headspace, due to the constant stimulus. Having recently run the relatively quiet Itabashi City Marathon (I still can't get into Tokyo Marathon after several attempts), it was a huge contrast in noise level and concentration steadiness. Once again, a huge congrats to Mo, and the Sarah Hartleys (our TRC Sarah, and her namesake)!

Fantastic work Sarah. I was running too but the only place I saw you was at Mile27! An important question for you - how did you keep your pacing AND your Strava track so accurate round Canary Wharf area? Mine, and just about everybody’s I know, has Strava showing us running through tall buildings and our Garmin giving wildly confusing paces. Yet your track looks super accurate and your paces was microsecond perfect. What satellites have you got set in your watch? I’m set for ‘GPS plus GLONASS’ but that is clearly not the best option…..As a side issue, to solve this inaccuracy problem, I was subsequently recommended to use the Garmin app ‘Peter’s Pacer’. On paper it looks brilliant but I need a race to try it out on - would love to hear the Running Channel’s review of this.

How did you managed to stick to a consistent pace? Was it a specific training session that helped this? My splits in the marathon are consistently slower. :(

On the rounding up, im usually quite annoyed when i do a parkrun and my watch only logs it as 4.96 or something and i wish i could round that up. Does this ever happen in a marathon where you finish it but your watch doesn't give you full credit?

I hate that too! But usually I find that over the longer distance events you'll end up way over what you'd expect for mileage...weaving through crowds, drink stations and food stops (ultras) all seem to add to the total distance.

Congratulations Sarah! Well deserved. What do you say when you have social media channels like yours promoting very fast times for marathons when the average for a lot of people is 5 to 6 hours? I never see you talk to people that are slow runners. it’s either a professional or someone that can run less than four hours. it would be nice to get a perspective from someone who is not as fast as all of you. Maybe it’s something you can consider.

Only one thing to say: Sarah is not an average runner. Her modesty is charming, but it's definitely misrepresenting what an average runner does.

Trained 9 weeks for my second attempt on my first marathon, I had 6 more weeks left before having Sciatica on my right leg!! I am totally gutted😥😥 I had to now defer my marathon!! And co-incidentally, my first marathon ended in shambles same time last year🥲
