We would never stay at those really posh hotels if we had to pay full price! But yes, it’s nice to see how the other half lives occasionally😉
Marriot and Hyatt Hotel points? sounds like a very wise investment. This is the way to vacation in a City! Definitely in style, the way a city break should be! Magenta Desk? Wow, this is a great room! Loving the staircase in the St Pancras. Gosh, a repurposed train station! How cool is that? The buffet looked great quality but im still avoiding them until the unmentionable is a distant memory. Great architecture on The Dixon, how iconic! Gosh i wonder how they keep those chandeliers clean? Must have to close for a week! Tissues in an elevator? 🧐 nice modern rooms! Loving the bathroom tiles they look original (know they are not, but how cool). Great shot of your boys from 2014! Wow, that room is incredible, id find it hard to leave! Lovely video and some insight into hotel points! 👍

Thanks for watching and leaving such a thoughtful long comment! We certainly enjoyed some posh digs in 2022. It was such a treat! It’s especially fun to see historic buildings repurposed in such a luxurious way. And YES it does look like a tricky job to clean that huge handcuff chandelier!!!

The St. Pancras Renaissance is not a re-purposed railway station. It is the station hotel for the very beautiful and stunning station where you catch trains to various parts of Britain and also the Eurostar trains to Paris. In my opinion it is one of the great transport hubs in the world! It was very remiss of Dara to mislead in this way.

@@robertwilson738 please except my sincere apologies. However, I do maintain that the restaurant is in the former booking office. It seems pretty obvious when you are there.
You are our type of traveler Dara!!!! We are Bonvoy members and honestly when we consider traveling, particularly outside of the US, it's the only brand we trust. That Renaissance was my FAVORITE. As soon as we get back from the UK we start planning our next trip there. Planning ahead really pays. It allows you to have the widest selection of places to stay at the cheapest prices. I also am very conscientious about timing when booking train travel. For example, is 1/4 the cost 90 days + out of a day of purchase. For regular trains seem to need to be booked right after 90 days. If you wait much longer all the cheap fares are gone but those fares don't exist more than 90 days out.

So many beautiful hotels in London, l went to London 3 or 4 times a year before l retired. Although the hotel was paid for on expenses l never went over board. Holiday Inn was safe all the rooms were the same and breakfast was included. I have stayed in one where the breakfast was £40, didn't have that one. Two of my favourites are the Churchill at London Bridge and the Mountbatton in Leicester Square both easy to go to the theatre or Opera House in Covent Garden and a cheeky trip to Rules for dinner. Now having friends who moved back into the city accommodation is free. My American nephew is studying in London for a year and is renting a one bed apartment or rabbit hutch to be honest.

Absolutely! I would not pay $500 per night for a hotel room ... but it's a treat to have a small dose of how the rich & famous live occasionally ;-)
The Renaissance St. Pancras is certainly a unique property with incredible 19th c design. I would point out however the cheaper guests rooms are very ordinary and boring, a world away from the better rooms which of course are more expensive but better reflect the atmosphere of the hotel in general. London, as you would expect, has a huge variety of hotels ranging from being included in the World’s best to extremely basic and sometimes well below acceptable standards, my advice would be don’t go too cheap because there’s always a reason and this could totally spoil your holiday.

Dara is not correct. We did visit the rooftop garden at the Canary Wharf Elizabeth Line station. She was just too sleep deprived to remember correctly. I'm not going to miss an opportunity to visit a building designed by my favourite architect, Sir Norman Foster! An interesting aspect of the garden is that the plants come from countries whose ships visited West India Dock and, since the station sits on the Prime Meridian line, the plants are arranged according to hemisphere of origin. We actually visited 3 rooftop gardens on this last trip - Crossrail Place, The Garden at 120 Fenchurch, and the famous Sky Garden at 20 Fenchurch (which we've visited many times). I took friends of ours on a mini-tour of Canary Wharf so we were able to see a lot of the sites. My favourite building there is One Park Drive.

The times (not many) I've stayed in a London hotel my budget only covered a Travelodge, but maybe I'll be able to upgrade to one of these lovely places one day. I did have one slightly scary time in London when I was in my 20's. I stayed with a friend for a couple of days, and the first night there was an armed police raid on a house half way down the street. Whatever the problem was it seemed to thankfully be resolved peacefully.

Wonderful hotels! I love the St Pancras one as it's such a beautiful building. It's shocking to think that in the 1960s the railroad company (who owned the hotel) wanted to demolish it and build some hideous 1960s concrete monstrosity (I hate brutalist architecture with a passion!) Thankfully a few prominent individuals, including the Poet Laureate John Betjeman campaigned to save it. The station has a statue of him, to thank him?

Don’t get my husband Ian started talking about brutalist architecture. @@theresabigwideworld2632 it's extremely sad. In my opinion, the best way to evaluate a building is how it stands the test of time. Will people a generation from now still be admiring the building, like St Pancras, or will they see it as a blight on the cityscape? It's crazy for me to think that with all the progress in technology and building techniques, we can't build structures that match those built by the Victorians. I do think that there are modern buildings of merit. I really like the work of Sir Norman Foster. I think that 20 years on, 30 St. Mary Axe "The Gherkin", hasn’t lost its luster. One of the most popular photos people take in central London is of the Gherkin with the medieval St Andrew Undershaft in the foreground. In contrast, nearby, is the barbarous “concrete jungle” brutalism of the Barbican which hasn’t aged well and doesn’t blend with its surrounding environment and yet still was inexplicably given listed status. There are very few people taking photos of medieval St. Giles, Cripplegate with the Barbican in the background. We’re fortunate here in Dallas to have one of Foster's creations in our Opera House, which for Dallas, is a beautiful building.

@@ians3586 As much as I love historic architecture I do also think there are some examples of modern architecture that is attractive and stands the test of time. I like the gherkin building as well, London does have some examples of what I would consider beautiful modern architecture. So I would include The Shard, what's now called City Hall (The GLA building in Southwark) and the Victoria Rd entrance to Victoria Station is fantastic, I love how it swoops down to a triangle point, it looks like a nose! The problem with brutalism (IMHO) is that concrete was used and concrete ages really badly, and the desire to keep the buildings as plain as possible, there's nothing attractive about them! The 1960's wasn't a total disaster for architecture and I would use the Sydney Opera House as an example of a beautiful building that was built during the brutalism period. Sadly though only the outside was built to Jan Utzon's (the original architect's plans) he was fired before the building was finished as the costs were enormous and another architect changed the inside design to cheaper 1960s square boxes. Most people are disappointed when they do go inside.
