London Air Ambulance taking off from Cambridge Circus, Soho, London

I shot it in March 2010 and it was an amazing thing to see as it's a pretty small area with lots of high stuff around it. Plus there were a LOT of people crowded around. It's worth looking on Google Street view to see the challenges: goo.gl/maps/N3Sqw

    Does anyone notice that it takes off when the traffic light goes GREEN? I used to watch it often while working at the British museum for over 10 years.

    Yeah this will probably never stop to amaze people. If it's not for the machine itself taking off, than for the locations where the pilot is able to fit it ;) . Have seen this happen a few times as well. The one I remember the most was very close to a primary school that had just gone out for the day and the helicopter had just touched down on a football field. The whole cycling path next to the field was filled with spectators, especially kids. I don't know Cambridge Circus as a place and so I don't know what kind of madness this is in daily life, but to me the only question that remains is how you start traffic again after such a thing...

    It's the intersection of two well-known road in the West End of London, plus has a well-known theatre there... www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.5133173,-0.1291723,3a,75y,205.32h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sGPrzqqNz5N6htwE_kmp52g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en Also there's some tall stuff around it. The bit that I found odd is the Policeman was really standing too close, unlike everyone else. You do need to go straight up though, or it won't end well...

    I more meant like, what it's comparable to. From my parents, I know that Oxford Circus is like a traffic-nightmare at 'certain' times and I was wondering if this is such a place as well. I don't really know if the policeman was too close: I have seen a dutch Air ambulance taking off from the children's play area at a small primary school, with an officer standing really close. Ofcourse, you run a greater risk of getting hurt if the rotor clips something it really shouldn't, but I think there were quite a lot of people that wanted to get closer as well, hence why he was there.

    It's about 80% as busy as Oxford Circus, although that has more busses going through. More recently (than the video) Cross-rail has messed with traffic around there a lot. It's a bit more of an adventure for pedestrians than Oxford Circus, which is now really easy as they have this scheme were you can cross N/S, E/W and both diagonals, unlike Cambridge Circus. Cambridge Circus also has more tall posts and wires around. Throw in a fair bit of wind and it looked very keen to me, it's maybe a tighter space than the video suggests.

  • @weeardguy

    @weeardguy

    So it's quite comparable ;) . What did Cross-rail exactly do then? Did it like cancel (or increase) quite a lot of bus-services since the job there was done? Indeed, it's always hard to judge the amount of space in an area just by a video.

    Cross-rail has dug-up huge chunks of London, including a massive area at the Oxford Street/Tottenham Court Road/Charing Cross Road junction (the latter being one of the roads that goes through Cambridge circus). It's still a work-in-progress: 2013: now-here-this.timeout.com/2013/01/17/in-birds-eye-view-pictures-the-latest-crossrail-sites-across-london/ Recent: www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.5157898,-0.1303498,139m/data=!3m1!1e3

    Wow, inner city congestion has to be pretty bad when an air ambulance can get someone to a trauma center faster than a land ambulance! Hats off to piloting skills to complete a perfect vertical descent and lift- there is zero margin for error!

    It depends what the issue is, as some Hospitals are better for some specific conditions, plus flying in a straight line at 120mph+ is always quicker than jumping every red light at a speed where you won't have a crash... Also sometimes it's the arrival that counts, as the Air Ambulances carry an expert trauma team, so often they deliver them close to the scene and don't transport patients back (as they go in ground Ambulances once stabilised). Oh and yes, I thought this was amazing, so much street furniture...

    I saw some numbers for what just being ferried between Hospitals by Helicopter cost in the U.S. and it was insane, you can see why about 1M Americans go bankrupt each year over medical bills (source: 2015 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation). An emergency Air Ambulance flight seems to cost about $40,000 (source: 2019 study published in Health Affairs). Obviously in the U.K. there is no charge, which is a good thing...

  • @JonInLondon

    They are working on replacing them right now... www.londonsairambulance.org.uk/news-and-stories/charity-news/launches-biggest-appeal-in-history "We need to raise £15 million to be able to replace the current helicopter fleet by 2024." The MD902s have been good though (they currently have G-EHMS and G-LNDN, the second is the newer one). On the AW169 I wouldn't want to take off in places like this in a bigger Helicopter (A169 = 14.6m vs. MD902 = 9.8m) let alone with a Tail Rotor at the back (NOTAR for the win there I think).

    Replying to myself, I found that it is a MD Helicopters MD Explorer (MD902), which uses a NOTAR system - no tail rotor, but a fan inside the hollow tailboom exits through a pair of slots on the right side and creates a boundary layer flow of air, which takes advantage of the Coandǎ Effect to create countertorque thrust. Directional control is achieved through a vented rotating drum at the end of the boom.

    @@JoseLuisOchoaPadilla Thanks for coming up with the answer, rather than people waiting for me to see it :-) I have another video I'll put up some time where one of the Essex Air Ambulance Pilots says this is really the main choice of Helicopter for the job... BTW This one is London's "Old" helicopter, they have a newer one too (same type).
