I rescued mine from the wilds of ebay for £95. This is her forever home, and worry not, she's happy and loved. 📸 The Lomo-wide is beautiful with great functionality and fun accessories. I have the instax wide too, but for me the lomo seems to produce images of greater clarity and colour accuracy (for instax film/instant film generally). Its lovely to see it getting some love on the internets. - Many thanks 💟

Hey Chris, your first video on the Lomo Wide is what helped me to decide and buy it. Thanks!! I am absolutely in love with it. Using it mostly for woodland photography on tripod, I am only missing a full manual mod like for Polaroid cameras (and a glass lens). A couple of notes on the accessories, in case someone is interested in buying them. The "wide" lens reduce the max focus distance to 75cm, learned it the hard way with plenty unsatisfying images. For both the "Wide" and "Macro" lens it is possible to rig an empty film cartridge to work as a ground glass focus screen and calibrate all three lenses with intermediate positions (I can also give the distances from the minimum focus distance that I have found works on my camera if someone is interested). With that, I am getting much sharper and consistent images. And the 1/30sec mode is incredible. I shot images with up to 30 multiexposures at 1/30s to get the correct exposure after metering with a phone app. Also, thanks for the suggestion of the Epson scanner - well worth it compared to scan with phone apps.

@@kevinlui8601 Sure! I had the idea from @ForesthillFilmLab that mentioned using a ground glass to manual focus the camera. Of course this would be a one-off, since you can't just swap in the ground glass mid-pack (well, if you're in studio and have a dark room you might, but I mostly shoot outside). And I don't have a ground glass. After a bit of reading, I cut off the back of an empty pack (it's soft plastic, a cutter/exacto blade works fine) so I just had the outer frame. Then I used an old translucent plastic pouch (oven paper and tracing paper works to) to create a very flat surface on the same plane the instant film would be. This is a makeshift ground glass (it is not great, the fresnel lens is stil lacking but it works). Then it comes the long part. I created a image file (photoshop, paint, anything works) with white background and a series of letters, lines and shapes. Put it full screen on my monitor, completely dark room and camera in B mode on a movable support. Use masking tape on the lens, right above the markings for the standard focusing, and mark the zero (closest focus) in pen. At this point: set the camera at a known distance (choose a specific part of the camera, I use the front lens for macro and the mid body for the wide), open the shutter in B mode and start to focus. When you are satisfied, make a new mark on the masking tape and write the distance. Repeat at a different distance as many times you want (or can given the space available on the masking tape). I preferred doing it separately for the wide and macro lens, then taking off the tape and transcribing on a new piece on a flat surface, just because it looked nicer. Cover it with normal tape if you know you will shoot in the rain. Hope this helps, let me know if you need clarifications

Lomography consistently makes some really creative remote shutter buttons. That lens cap is GENIUS, and the lomo instant square too had one that slid into the camera body, like whoever thinks of these is so smart!

@@JustAnotherChrisplease make a video in search of perfection of instant film, like hassleblad with instax back, or instax wide 300 with new lens from mamiya press, or rb67 with sq1 back… I want to see what the best of perfection on Polaroid and instax film. Plus love your channel your reviews are so so so much better then the others on cameras, bout all cameras that u recomend this wide is one. But I want so much some premium stuff for the instant cameras… hate plastic cameras with plastic lens, and the sf70 is shiiitttttt and crazy expensive for what comes. By by thx for hear my cry.

I bought a Lomo Instant Square because I wanted to use all the cool features it has. After more than a year, I realized that I had never used those functions and therefore I preferred to get a Wide 300. In the future maybe I will try this one too because it also seems more compact and very beautiful

Other than the 500AF it is the best wide out there. But, I found the light meter to be inconsistent and mine never really is ever sharp. Fun fact, it's got 49mm threads so you can put a nice square lens hood and it looks great and helps decrease flare, AND if you want to be ultra steathly, flip it to double exposure even if you are only doing one shot (great for street), take your shot, walk away, then flip back to normal mode and it'll eject and no one will be the wiser!

hey Chris! I’m stuck on purchasing either the slr 680 or the I-2. I like the features on the I-2 but I’m not a fan of it’s battery, and the slr 680 is just classic. While it does depend on the film, would you say the outcome of the photos are relatively the same in terms of sharpness and exposure etc? which one should I get?

Hey Chris just watched this and your other video. I’m in Tokyo for a trip and saw one brand new in a shop (the white one) for 22,000 JPY or about $140. Looking for a companion to my SX-70 and wondering if I should give it a try or save up for an I2. Any thoughts? Looks like the framing is the hardest thing to deal with.

My main gripe with Lomo is that their quality control is ABISMAL, even lower than Polaroid’s. They cut costs using cheap materials (very soft plastics most of the time) and it shows after a few months of use. A friend of mine used to be an official distributor for Lomo about 6 years ago and he told me that he had lots of returns because of quality control problems: shutters that became oily and stuck closed, covers that peeled off, rubberized covers that became sticky even before being taken out of the box for the first time… He ended up closing shop because it wasn’t possible to make a living with so many problems (that of course he had to deal with). If their cameras were $100USD it would be a smaller issue, but they sell most of their stuff as “premium” and while they look good enough at first glance they’re not durable at all.

Hmmm 🤔 been using the square glass for 4 years with no issues even cosmetically. But just like every other company that makes products there’s going to be a bad egg from time to time and the smaller you are then more that will impact. I bet Polaroid has twice the returns it’s just that they’re a larger company and it doesn’t affect them. Plus all broken products are tax right offs or cash in on insurance

  • @MrLennart1976

@@JustAnotherChris Poor quality control doesnt mean that all the cameras are bad, yours might work just fine for 15 years. It just means the bad ones arent screened out like they should be and that production issues are left unadressed. And this is a very well known fact about lomo.

just recently I acquired the William Klein special edition second hand from the UK. Was a little anxious about taxes, but nothing happened there (you know, Brexit and stuff). Haven't really used it yet, but everything seems to work. I also have a Lomo Instant Automat, the LIA, which is an update on the original Lomo Instant for Mini Film. Also has the same lens cap with remote. Never used it, but the LIA makes pretty good pics, maybe the best instax mini camera for under 200 bucks.

This is my favourite instant camera! However, I’ve had mine for a few years and since the batteries move around in their compartment it’s become very temperamental with actually staying on. So have to shake it to get it to stay on but then sometimes it’ll switch off mid print. I’ve stuffed some tin foil in there to hold them down but wondering if you had any better solutions?

I bought one a few years ago but hardly used it. To me it feels cheap, not very well built and I feel like anything could go wrong any moment. I have an Instax 100 which I paid only €20 for and I feel I can truly rely on it. It's already taken several beatings but it all doesn't matter. I've converted it so it can take both Wide & Square and it's a real work horse.

I was never a Jock. Just a reformed Burnout. I love my Instax square 6. The Instax wide doesn't have any controls or bells and whistles. I don't know why the view finder isn't above the lens for centered photos. I am not a rangefinder lover and most instant cameras follow that pattern. The Sharper image is the only instant camera that has the view finder above the lens. If they can do it then Instax and polaroid can do the same. Since you can remove the view finder hold it above the lens and take a photo. It should be centered.

I bought one awhile ago ... the first arrived and wouldn't eject any film. After the expected rigmarole, another was sent. The second wouldn't eject the dark slide but once cleared in a dark bag, it ran fine ... so I kept it. But at the price? Pretty disappointing. Eventually I sucked up my bitterness and began to use it :) There's a certain freedom you feel when shooting Instax Wide because it's pretty cheap and ... some of the results are surprisingly good. I still prefer the Polaroid product but Instax Wide can surprise.

It's the best if you like the “typical lomo” unsharp images it produces. If you want the actual best, fit it with a proper lens or pay double and get a vintage polaroid converted to instax. Lomos business model is about style, not image quality.
