LOLLAR PICKUPS - Pickup Height Adjustment

Музыка

In this video we discuss some tips and tricks for adjusting your pickups for their optimal sound. Unfortunately, there's no set value that we can offer that is best for all pickups or players. But, with the info in this video, your ears, and a few minutes of dialing them in, you can find the perfect pickup adjustment settings for your individual needs.

The sound example of a too close to string pickup was very helpful. I’ve never heard that demonstrated before. Really well done guys! Thank you.

Right?! It's pretty hard to miss it when it's that clear. But having never actually gone that close to the strings before, I wasn't prepared for how much it can affect the strings' movement. I was glad that the recordings (both too close and at a proper distance) were so easily contrasted to one another after KZread's compression was added. Glad you found it helpful as well.

Remember when I first installed humbuckers on my mahogany thinline. Started out close and it sounded horrible. Then just lowered it until it was beautiful. But I play light fingerstyle. A lady friend played it with a heavy pick hand and I was like wo wo. We need to lower it again.

Lots of helpful information here! One thing that I've always found a bit mysterious about height adjustments: Almost every tutorial says to "use your ears" but I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe/outline what specific characteristics they listen for... Would love to know what you're listening for when adjusting heights on, say, a telecaster with a Charlie Christian in the neck & a traditional vintage-style bridge pickup.

That's because there's no "right" or "wrong" answer, necessarily. You're not listening for one specific thing in particular. You just need to listen for the sound that *YOU* like best. Some folks pick the position that they play the most, for instance the bridge position, and they fine-tune the sound of that pickup to get the tone and output that they want. Once they've dialed that in, they adjust the other position(s) to suit their individual needs. Some might want to maximize the balance in output, others may prefer to do the same with the other pickup(s), by adjusting to a specific pickup's individual "sweet spot". Either way is fine and whatever sounds best to the individual player, really is best for that player's instrument.

@@LollarPickups Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply! I appreciate you taking the time to answer. I guess what I was getting at are the specifics of the process that someone with lots of experience might just sort of unconsciously assume. Some example questions that come to mind: What's the best way to set an amp's volume while adjusting pickup height? Where should you position yourself relative to the amp? How should an amp's EQ be set? (I know this varies a ton from amp to amp!) Does speaker size make a difference when setting heights? How do you know for yourself that a pickup has hit the "sweet spot?" Is there a certain sonic character that lets you know you're there? Is there a certain sonic character that lets you know you're *not* there? How do you keep mental track of changes in sound while you're making adjustments? I know that's a million questions, but I was just sort of trying to brainstorm out all of things that still feel mysterious to me personally.

Again, all of this is 100% subjective. There is no wrong or right. If you listen to the example in the video of what it sounds like when you've adjusted the pickup too close to the strings, you can hear the modulation in the string's sound. While I (and most others, for that matter) would consider this the "wrong" for us, others may be looking for just that sort of thing as a way of creating their own unique sound. There is no proper way to set the amp, speaker size, or where to sit in relation to it. You're trying to optimize the sound of your own preference and that will almost certainly apply across the board. Just set your amp controls to wherever you normally have them when playing and sit, well, anywhere that you can hear the amp. The one thing I might suggest is that you have the guitar's volume and tone controls maxed to fully open up, so you can hear the unincumbered sound of the pickups, minimally affected by the instrument's controls. But, for example, if you always play with your volume at halfway and tone all the way down, then you might want to be sure to check the sound at those settings as well. As for the "sweet spot", again, totally subjective. The sweet spot is where *YOU* like it best. It's not a single, quantifiable sound or attribute, but wherever the individual player likes it best. Some players may prefer it closer; some further away. And neither is wrong, just a matter of personal taste. There is no set distance, just follow the instructions in the video to find what you like best. It will be different from one instrument to the next, as each guitar will have different tonal characteristics and resonant frequencies. So you can't assume what you like on one instrument is going to automatically be the same on any other instrument. Each pickup in each instrument will need to be dialed in individually using the same trial-and-error process.

Hello! I have a question : the neck pickup of my Gibson 359 (339 type) is "tilted" towards the neck and so not parallel to the strings. What should I do about it ? Happy to hear your advices my friends 🤔

Great question. This is often by design. If you were to play with your action very low, and particularly when playing on the higher frets, you might find that the strings would be too close on the neck side of the neck pickup. This design allows for the strings to be angled more level with the pickup when fretted higher on the neck and maximizes the relation between the proximity to the string and ability to not interfere with the strings. Honestly, if you're not noticing any issues, then there's nothing to be concerned with. Pickups can be oriented like that and work just fine. If, however, you find that there is some issue going on with the magnetic field not interacting with the strings or if there isn't any way for you to adjust it to get your preferred setup, then you may want to seek out a luthier who can modify or fabricate a custom pickup mounting ring that works more to your liking with your particular instrument's top and setup.
