Lolita Fashion: Costume or Culture?
Lecture Event
Japan's playful and avant-garde take on Victorian-era clothing, known as Lolita, has created a vibrant fashion subculture that started on the streets of Harajuku and has spread overseas. Gwynn Galitzer, performance artist and Founder of Dirty Bird Productions, will moderate a panel featuring former Kawaii Ambassador Misako Aoki, appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in 2009, Carolyn Dee, author of the popular Lolita blog F Yeah Lolita and administrator of the largest English-speaking Lolita online community, and Christina Gleason, researcher of Lolita culture, author of the blog Ramble Rori, and founder of the first Northeast USA alternative fashion conference, RuffleCon. The panel will delve into Lolita fashion and offer a playful look into the subculture's origins and development. Baby the Stars Shine Bright will show a collection of Lolita fashions direct from Japan chosen specifically for this event.

I think that Lolita would be a way to express a person's individuality. But of course, some would see it as being "fake" or a "weeabo". I have been considering obtaining a dress(reawakened since yesterday), and looking into the culture. Is there things I need to know first? Thank you.

+Kaylin Patterson Start off with doing research on sites that are geared toward the fashion. I recently found a website called hellolace.com that was very helpful in explaining different Lolita styles. I also joined the EGL (Elegant Goth Lolita) community on LiveJournal to get a feel for the community, what they do, what they talk about, what lingo they use, etc. Second-hand clothes are bought and sold on the egl_comm_sales LiveJournal community. (Lolita can get very expensive!) Look at photos/videos of the different styles, and pick whatever styles appeal to you... don't be afraid to mix it up. Ya don't have to wear pink frills and cherrie-printed skirts all the time. You can wear all black too! Avoid buying stuff from eBay, because it's usually Halloween costume quality stuff. And definitely steer clear of the websites called Milanoo and Light In The Box, because you might get ripped-off like I did! If you're on a tight budget, I would suggest the website called Bodyline that sells reasonably-priced Lolita gear. Closet Child is also a site with affordable stuff, but bear in mind that the prices are in Japanese yen, so you'll have to use an online currency converter. Also, you will have to translate the web page to the language you read unless you are fluent in Japanese. And if you can sew really well, then you can make your own clothes, and save a ton of money. Of course, if you're rich, you can buy from any well-known pricey brands! Here's a short list of brands that I personally like, yet cannot afford: Innocent World, Fan + Friend, Metamorphose, Infanta, Alice and the Pirates, Juliet et Justine, Putamayo. It's not uncommon to see skirts that are $200, or dresses that are $400, among the big name brands in Lolita fashion, and sometimes people save up for years to buy their dream dress or whatever other item they were longing for. Later down the road, if they get sick of the dream items, they can sell their stuff, and buy a new wardrobe with the proceeds... or pay for something more pressing. Personal advice: when you only have enough money to either pay the rent, or to buy a new Lolita item...pay the rent! That $200 skirt can wait, and being homeless is no fun (I speak from personal experience). Hope this looong reply helps!

    1. I hope many will enjoy the aspect of boys in Loli fashion as much as we focus on girls. I was sad they didn't have much info on it given that many Lolis do try to be inclusive of both sexes. 2. Sad that we couldn't see the awesome coordinates of those in the audience. Perhaps it's shown later or on another video.

+Gatz i e e e e Any gender can wear the styles that people usually call "girly". Many Lolita's believe that clothes shouldn't have gender assigned to them, and I wholeheartedly agree.

Aoki Misako has been a Lolita ambassador for 6 years and she still doesn't speak English??? I know she's busy, but she could probably squeeze learning English somewhere in her schedule (i.e. on plane trips around the world). Japanese kindergarten children know more English than she does! I don't get it.

Do you know how difficult it is to learn a language? Especially as an adult? There are so many monolingual English speakers. Why don't they have to learn other languages? Because English dominates? Because they don't have to? Well... Aoki doesnt really have to learn English. She represents Japanese fashion and culture. People want to hear her speak Japanese. So I guess Japanese dominates, because she doesn't have to. Because she doesn't want maybe.
