The siege, set by the Nazis, lasted 872 days and claimed well over 4 million lives from the civilians and military men left defending the city. All through the starvation, incessant bombing and artillery, and extreme hardship, the Leningrad radio would let a metronome tick over the radio. It played everywhere and was regarded as the heartbeat of the city - a sign that they had not yet been taken. It sent shivers down my spine to hear it here.

2 of the men who died in that crash were with the Detroit Red Wings here in America. So as a Wings fan, this broke my heart. To honor those men, the Wings had a patch on their jerseys to honor them the following season after this disaster.

This horrific incident recieved absolutely ZERO Media coverage from the major sports news outlets here in the U.S. When something tragic happens to a football or basketball player, they recieve endless coverage.
