    I liked it, but I admit, I'm disappointed there wasn't more chaos and scheming. Loki could easily grow as a person without losing those traits.

    Yep I agree. I actually really enjoyed the show, and I thought Hiddleston was great, but I wish they had kept Loki's personality and power level a bit more. I don't mind that they fast-tracked his character development to be more chill, but as you said, he could have kept his intelligence and mischievousness.

    Having Telekinesis doesn't mean you're physically strong. Loki has a resilient durable body. But he has no actual major lifting strength like Thor or Cap. Case in point, Jean Grey. She can move mountains with her mind, doesn't mean she can lift a car with her bare hands. Also, Loki's telekinesis is magic. Magic takes power. Use it rashly and you will get drained.

    @JSW - that's a dumb argument. A lot of sci fi concepts will never happen, doesn't mean discussing the morality of it is useless. For example you can still determine whether something that is hypothetical would be morally wrong by using similar real life premises. As for loki kissing himself, the moral argument about this being incest is that they literally came from the same parents. Doesn't matter that they're from different universes because apparently they're very close genetically. So someone finding it disgusting is valid. A lot of ppl here say the point is for him to learn this new 'self love' concept, which shows a huge flaw in our society: that we don't know that we can be confident and capable (which is not the same as self love, which usually turns to arrogance) without self love. In my opinion, Loki already underwent an arch in Ragnaröc, and displayed it in Infinity War. This scenery makes the times when they get out even better and more vivid. Seeing a character not in a suit was exciting. The apocalypses and the pruning area are meant to be horrible, and yet they look so much better than the place that’s supposed to be good. It’s a subtle way of making you understand that the TVA is corrupt and horrible. And it makes a lot of sense in the end.

    I keep hearing arguments that the show is about Loki learning to love himself, however I don’t think it works in that way at all. I thought before that the whole thing about Loki is that he *only* loves himself. Even willing to backstab his own brother if it meant he got ahead. If anything it’s more so about Loki learning to be more selfless but they confuse both of those lessons to where it feels like neither were satisfying. Loki’s whole relationship with sylvie is just so poorly written and built up to where most people I was talking to thought the relationship was just Loki playing her the whole time. He randomly falls in love her with in episode 3 after merely seeing her face, it’s just so odd. Is he supposed to be selfish because he only loves himself or is he selfless because he learns to love someone other than himself, but it’s still himself??? The classic Loki in episode 5 had better development in one line when he said “I missed my brother”. Add on top of that the sacrifice at the end of that episode and it seemed that one minor character had a better version of the same story arc as the main character.

  • @emilyhale1049

    I agree. The relationship feels super forced and it’s sad that I was able to call the fact that they were pushing the romantic relationship from the moment it was revealed the variant was a girl. Disney is so aggressive with pushing some type of romance in each of their series that you can call it the moment two main characters are the opposite sex. It drives me nuts and it confuses the whole message, as Loki in the first episode admits he doesn’t want to hurt people, that he doesn’t enjoy hurting people. This would be a good starting point for a development of learning to embrace that Loki can love other people. That he can have relationships with others without using them. But they had to mess it up so quickly. I love this show, love to see where it’s going, but the whole message behind it and the romance plot is so awkward and off balance.

    No, it was never that Loki only “loves” himself. It was that Loki only “had” himself. Those are two different things. He had problem with self love since he was a child and that never changed. Looking from acceptance from everyone but himself and thinking that no one but himself can see his true value. His entire sorry and everything he’s done was trying to show others that he is valuable and deserves love and acceptance, but never quite from himself. The show is about self love and self acceptance. He was always dependent on others to give that to him but never gave it to himself. With Sylvie it’s like looking into a mirror. He sees the potential in her and everything wonderful about her, which then we know he could potentially see that in himself as well. I believe there’s a second season so hopefully he can learn to see himself as he sees Sylvie without actually having to have her be there with him. Also, I can’t help but think you never understood Loki as a character. Maybe I’m wrong, but you were definitely wrong when you said Loki only loved himself. Especially since in episode 3 (I think it was) Loki had given Sylvie this whole metaphor about how love isn’t actually real. How could he love only himself when he doesn’t think love is even real?

TVA is litterally a bureaucratic, kafkaesque organization, it's supposed to look like a really boring office, and yet they touched it with a really nice flare of retro style which is quite unusual especially for a big sci fi/fantasy block buster production. It's very original in it's own way. And that scene in episode 3 when Loki gets drunk and sings, represents a lot of things changing within this character, He litterally says that "nothing matters" He feels hopeless when being inside of an Apocalypse and faceing off the greates power in the whole universe which is TVA, his whole world view just change drastically and that's how He express this feelings by being hedonistic

  • @mayacollins3447

    @mayacollins3447

    I also enjoyed the design to some extent of the TVA but I do believe there was something lacking to it, but I would say it was more because of the cinematography. Episode three wasn't paced correctly. Sure the scene in a bubble was a good one, but with the episode sandwiching and the aimlessness of it, didn't necessarily make for an engaging story.

    fr, I felt this too. Loki really didn't have his own true agency in the show that was supposed to be about him. After being the secondary character or villain in all the other mcu movies this show was supposed to show his character at the forefront and that just... didn't happen. I think that aspect is the biggest reason on why I didn't feel connected with the show.

    Part of the whole season is about him finding his purpose. It began with being thrown out of time and an existential crisis for him. A universally humbling revelation doesn't necessarily puts you in the narrative position of dynamic asskicker, which would never fit this character anyways btw. he's always been a schemer in the context of the MCU, and an unsuccessful low level one at that! Ofc he's going to take a backseat and observe other people's problems. THAT'S WHAT HE'D DO. Honestly, Schaf's opinion (and yours too I suspect) seems to be rooted in expectations for Loki as if he were the character in the comics, who is a massive threat and a genuine mastermind who also oozes smarmy charisma, and not the pompous self-important sad little boy who also oozes charisma that Hiddleston has played (masterfully, I might add) since 2011.

    @EmTom443 жыл бұрын

    Two points I’d like to bring up: 1. Natalie Holt’s music is beautiful in this series. The recurring violin motifs have so much passion in them and make a lot of scenes more dramatic, more emotional or more epic (also the theme tune is so cool, the fast ticking clock in the background with the orchestra in front as the black and white text shifts across the screen is 👌) 2. Jonathon majors as Kang in the finale might be one of my favourite performances in the mcu so far. An episode that is 90% expository dialogue could’ve been extremely boring and slow but Jonathon just steals the show. His performance is dramatic when it needs to be, funny at times and when he is funny it has a slight sinister undertone to it. It also makes me excited to think of that line “if you think I’m bad wait til you meet my variants” I’m really looking forward to what he brings in future projects like multiverse of madness or quantumania

His reaction when he doesn't know what's going to happen and his expression for just a second changes from immense glee to slight fear is honestly insane. What a talented actor. And when he gets stab right before you can see him ease into peace, he looks at Sylvie and just gives the biggest "You messed up look" while still holding that sinister smile.

    I honestly hated the Loki series, mostly because they ruined his character in every way. He is suddenly bad at lying, he can’t do magic half the time, and although his goofiness can be fun, it gets replaced by a weird obsession by a version of himself with boobs and blonde hair. Why? Oh, because his entire character is now that he’s a NaRCiSsIsT. Wow, groundbreaking. They should’ve called the show Sylvie, because CLEARLY she becomes the main character from the moment she enters episode 2 near the end. I wanted to like her, but the weird flirting, the fact that I got the feeling that she really, truly, could not stand Loki in episode 3, and the fact that she gets to fail ONCE for a funny bit, and the rest of the time is just perfect, ruined any chance of me liking her. Not thanks! I really thought this show was just going to be a fun, light-hearted buddy-cop style series with two dudes trying to fix the timeline, based on the trailers, but nope. Everything has to feed into the lore and MCU universe and can’t just be simple fun. Whatever.

I thought there was going to be more of Hunter B-15 going awol to learn more about the truth of the TVA as well. And Ravonna Renslayer being sidetracked trying to track her down to prevent her from doing so. Then everyone coming together at the same time to realize that the TimeKeepers weren't even real the whole time. Idk. Would've been more interesting imo.

    Personally, I really liked the aesthetic of the TVA. When people try to portray the future or something above time they usually go with white, washed out, minimalism. It's boring and doesn't tell us much about the place. The TVA design was vintage 60s. They used physical books, files, and paper that covered their desks instead of the regular overused holographic future-tech. I like the muted oranges, browns, and reds. It gave the place both a homely but mysterious feel to it

That way they could actually have time to flesh everything out without it feeling rushed, which is probably the biggest sin the show commits. I'm not asking for Doctor Who, but just for something more than exposition. Also I feel like Loki himself is being written as his post-Ragnarok self instead of his 2012 version, so he's less conniving and bitchy than back then. Honestly, I don't think loki as a character had THAT much growth over his arc beforehand in the mcu. Prior to ragnarok, all we saw of him were situations where he had control or understanding of the variables around him, and was able to operate as more of a mastermind, with goals that came into conflict with our heroes. The dude has been living for over a millennia at this point, and its almost MORE unbelievable to think that his brother and father would still hold him in such high regards, and keep him in such trusted positions if he'd been 'evil' prior to that.. in ragnarok, he has different priorities, he's more focused on the survival of his race, after having had his fill of ruling. His brother treats what he did, besides when he thought loki accidentally killed odin, as little more than a squabble. before this show we never really saw what loki was like in a more casual setting, or when he's trying to figure out whats going on around him, with the closest moment having been in ragnarok, so it kinda tracks that thats what he's most similar to, when considering them less by a human view of time and growth and closer to a near-immortals.

    The issue with that though, is that Marvel had no idea how to keep that tone and actively tell the audience that’s what was happening. They should be telling us(through subtleties in the show) that he’s in crisis, that he’s been through like 5 paradigm shifts by now, but instead they give him a mental breakdown while holding him to the standard of what Loki was in Ragnarok. The show tells us we are looking at and watching a Loki that hasn’t changed at all, while literally changing him entirely as more scenes pass. I think if it was written better it would’ve been way clearer and more of a satisfying character study.
