I think in Season 3 it was revealed that Clark was a virgin waiting to save himself for marriage and Lois completely respecting and admiring him for it. No way in hell they would write stuff like that today.

Dean Cain and Terri Hatcher had the same chemistry as Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder. The tension they created on screen was fantastic. They took great care of keeping the the movie characters alive. They still didn't copy them but took the relationship between Lois and Clark to the next level.

I adore this show! Lois and Clark‘s relationship develops into one of the more healthy, loving married relationships I’ve ever seen in a television show. And the focus on Clark is brilliant, pointing out that Clark Kent is who he is, and Superman is what he can do. He is intelligent, kind, and incredibly gentle. He is by no means perfect, but he is inherently good, and he’s literally powered by sunshine, so the upbeat optimism suits him. Thank you for making this video!

I was older than most of you guys, I was a senior in high school in 1993 and watched this back then and all through college. I remember TNT would even air reruns of the show while new episodes were on ABC, and TNT continued running reruns until 1999 or maybe even the early 2000s I believe. When you wanted to get out of writing that big paper or study for a test in 1997 or 1998, this was the show to go to, it was on a rerun somewhere.

@ZakynthosDiamandis He really ruined Superman for a lot of people who enjoyed the earlier portrayals, such as George Reeves (who I think was the best). Christopher Reeve made Clark an idiot and obnoxious. And ever since Reeve people think that Superman needs to be more on the lankier side, like narrow faced, I mean. Whereas Superman should have the body of a 1930s strongman, and a box chin/face.

I’ve NEVER understood the Hollywood idea that “once the couple gets together, we lose heat! Or have nowhere to go!”. The idea is as silly as it is stupid. Life doesn’t stop once people get married. Hell, if anything, it gets MORE interesting. It’s just an excuse hack writers use. Hollywood is long overdue for new blood. Cause that excuse is just tired.

Fun fact: on the comics side of things, the creators intended for Lois & Clark to be married by around Superman #75. They were building up to that during the "triangle era" of the comics. When the Lois & Clark TV show went into production, the higher ups wanted to have synchronicity with the show and the comics. In other words, they wanted the wedding to happen simultaneously in the comics and the show. As a result, their marriage had to be stalled until the relationship in the show show could "catch up." They scrambled to find something to do with the the big #75 issue. Editor Paul Levitz often joked "Let's kill him!" during pitch meetings. This time, they ran with his idea. Thus, The Death of Superman occurred, a monumental shake-up for the Superman comics, a huge headline-grabbing iconic storyline, and changing the comics landscape in ways we're still feeling today.

The chemistry between Hatcher/Cain/Shea was amazing. Not as much a fan of Cain now as I'm not a Fox News viewer, but I did love his version of Clark. One thing that I brought up to Teri when I met her was what I felt the message of the show was. I had her write "Love Conquers All" on my print, because that's the message I take from it. Especially with how the season 3 cliffhanger goes. If Lois and Clark love each other enough they will find a way to make it work and survive. And this series shows how to build a strong relationship that is not based on sexual chemistry. It's about connecting emotionally. Something that bugged me about the Christopher Reeve universe is this idea of a " Catholic Priest" Superman. Superman can't serve humanity and have a relationship. Lois & Clark and other versions have a more "Protestant Minister" view where you can serve humanity and have a relationship.

I remember the day I got up early before school to watch Teri on GMTV and she told the presenters they ended it in the states. I cried watching that interview and somewhere have it in video. Teri was pregnant with Emerson at the time. I videoed every other episode and any interviews etc etc too back then!. Still love the show now but don’t really get as much chance at 42 to watch it!. I always thought Dean was 6ft tall…that’s what magazines said in the 90’s (and that Teri is 5ft 6in).

I always say the same thing. Dean Cain's Clark Kent is the kind of guy I aspired to be - the same can't be said for all the other iterations of a clumsy, bumbling, Clark Kent from other actors. Christopher Reeve is top actor, top Superman and best at creating two truly different characters, followed by Henry Cavill. But the best Clark Kent goes to Dean Cain.

Andrew, THANK YOU, for a simply SUPERB look at "Lois & Clark". You encapsulated and beat for beat explained what made the show so memorable. It continued the character of Superman seen in previous versions but expanded on what was explored and shown in Reeve's films. But, in a inspired move, it explored each character and their bond with each other. Everyone was family. A show where their species didn't matter. Love is love. In many ways, "Lois & Clark" succeeded where "Man of Steel" hadn't: Clark's life, was used to, show despite his powers he was the Son of two humans who instilled in him 'a way' greater than any country or planet. But of two people who showed him compassion and SAVED him. A message we all can learn from.

I had to watch this video after finishing season one. Man, this video nearly brought me to tears. Your music selection of Jay Gruska’s orchestration from the show was perfect. I’m sad to see Jimmy and Cat gone after just finishing season one. The 90s were notorious for “Aunt Viv’s”. a.k.a., so many unexpected casting changes or removals in long running series or TV shows. Once I get familiarized with a face, it’s hard for me now that I’m older to get used to seeing a new person in a role that someone else used to hold. To Hollywood, they could care less. And sometimes it needs to be done if an actor or actress is being uncooperative on set. But I just felt season one, like other people, had that spark. It was a lot of setting up, but it made me excited just to see where everyone was going to develop besides, just Lois and Clark. Cat served her purpose, but eventually she was comedic relief that was needed to ease the tension of season one’s hard hitting episodes. A proper write off would’ve been nice. And Michael as Jimmy really proved to be a hero in his own right. In my opinion, most shows don’t really get that casting right in the very beginning , but I feel Lois and Clark did. I watched your video, so yes, I was given spoilers to the rest of the series, but I remember watching clips here and there on KZread when I first was learning about Lois and Clark. So I don’t really feel like anything will be too spoiled for me if I choose to continue. But, if there’s anyone else on here who really loves season one and continued with the rest of the series, what was your opinion moving forward? Was it worth it? Or was it not the same?

Hi, it could have been worth mentioning that the first season, having a different tone from the following ones, was largely based on John Byrne's Man of Steel comic books, published in 1986 (the diminished powers, the central role of Clark instead of Superman, ...) to the point where several episode were literally transposed from the printed paper scene by scene. Ciao

The shows in the 90's were done differently to shows now. There were some excellent episodes, but the problem that plagued the 90's were pre-determined production orders; so they would have to do 20 episodes to meet the production order. I really like the tone of the show and I think it would be so great to see this type of show today but with more a more focused narrative across 10 episodes and of course much better special effects. Other than that, the show was excellent.

I love this show. Watched the initial run and have watched through the series 3 times on DVD. I think the biggest problem, as the series went on, was they felt a need to move Lois and Clark’s relationship forward (or backwards) every week which became really forced and led to some ridiculous episodes (frog clones, amnesia, etc.). I also thought they rushed getting rid of Lex. The relationship between those two had a great Sherlock/Moriarty thing going.

L&C depends heavily on a really fine, but rather small cast, unlike Smallville, where many more characters have been introduced, but e.g. didn't go beyond the single episode featuring Michael Mckean as Perry White, or on the other hand: killing Jimmy Olson (and resurrecting him magically in the strange last episode). While Teri and Dean depicted a remarkable chemistry and development, the stories tried to avoid unnecessary anachronisms to the original feeling/ideas, especially when it comes to technical advances. Also, SFX/VFX ... well, it was the 90ies, and while still somewhat better than e.g. Knight Rider, you could still smell the studio aura while sparks, dust and smoke filled a scene. Some of the villains were drawn in a comical way, not matching the modern and sometimes serious chemistry of the center of the storytelling. But still, the romance stayed in everybodies memory, suppressing the increasingly ridiculous ressurections of Lex Luthor or some characters fresh from a Disney comic. Getting rid of Kat Grant was a mistake, quite the same for Mayson Drake - a fine romance needs counterparts. That's were Smallville shined, a decade later. Both had guest stars, but the whole universe got projected into the presence, also adopting brand new tech, and managed not to make the chosen solution unplausible, at times. Also Kryptonite was heavily exploited (especially the red one, initiating the most interesting storylines). Anyway, L&C became the missing link, wiping Superboy from the collective memory and doing the split from the late 70ies-Reeve-Superman to the age, where the tech used or developed by the villains was not complete science fiction any more, but appeared in reality, in parallel to the show (laser, sound and ray weapons, space stations, robotics, cloning, ...).

Actually… I think I remember reading somewhere that the real reason why or the other reason why they recast for Jimmy Olsen was because the previous actor was asking for way too much money and he apparently did have a bit of an attitude problem.

Cat Grant died at the end of season one that’s why you don’t hear anything more about her. Just before she dies she learns that Clark is Superman.

You made a fantastic review video about this show. It’s a shame we never got to see or know what season five would’ve been like for the show. I wonder if the people behind the show ever considered making a Supergirl and Jimmy Olsen adventure series? OR since they did look alike, returning Michael Landes as a guess star to play Superboy from the future. He’d be Lois and Clark’s great, great, great grandson. Proving they did have children. Your favorite Lois is the opposite of me, next to Margot Kidder Erica Durance was the best on screen Lois Lane ever. Hatcher’s Lois was okay for comedy but couldn’t stand her behaving like a Superman fan girl in heat, her naive and gullible ways when it came to Lex Luthor AND her constantly being easily charmed by other men. I did love funny comedy moments when she gets into sticky situations. I also loved her little riffles with Cat. After seeing episode sex, lies and video I can share in the frustration of the Superman fans. I mean someone should tell them be careful how they behave in public as Lois and Superman. It’s so sad how the show abruptly ended and on such a frustrating ending. Made me wish the show would’ve just evolved into a Supergirl and Jimmy Olsen adventures. With Justin Whalin as Jimmy and Denses Richardson as Supergirl.

Great video I was 11 when it came out I watched ever episode. I think the biggest reason we didn’t have season 5 is because Teri got pregnant so maybe with ratings going back up it could have lasted another season or two between 5-7 seasons. Still a great show I too have the box set… I’ve met Dean Cain at comic con as well.

I read years ago that the reason they replaced Jimmy with Justin Whalen was to better compete with Jonathan Brandis from SeaQuest as a young heartthrob. I have no problem with the newer Jimmy. If he would have had the role from the start I would have liked him just fine, but I do prefer the original Jimmy better. Edit: dang, Justin's Jimmy got to date Denise Richards AND Kristana Loken (from Terminator 3)? Dude the first guy totally missed out.

This is a very well put together review. This is the superman I grew up with. Thing is, tv choices were limited in those days. BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4. That was it. Henceforth, most of the people I grew up with watched The New Adventure of Superman on BBC1 6pm on Saturday nights. This show always created a buzz for me; wondering how Superman would deal with the next villain. Or wondering, will Lois figure him out? What will happen when she does? This show always kept me guessing, on my toes. I still recall watching this at my grandma's house on the small portable tv. I sometimes watched at home. The special effects are dated now. But at the time they worked well. Even now I recall the feelings whenever I see them. Even though it was only 4 Series it wrapped up nicely. 🙂

I have to ask. Why didn't you watch the Fleischer shorts reruns throughout the 90s? That's how I personally became a fan so by the time Lois&Clark came around I was already a big fan.

Me, I am a bit oldr, born in 1951. So I still know the classical Comics from the Fifties nad Sixties wich were often reprinted in my hay days. To SUPERMAN & CLARK - yesm tgere were sine cgbges ti tge niderb versuib aqs wutg -BATMAN. I loved t the most episodes myself but I regret that the maketrs of the show ded not followe up more closly on the PILOT which was much more focused on CLARK as a Journalist as in the TV series LOU GRANT instead the scripts followed more and more a weaqker Soft- Soap Opera style line. what I did not caqre so much for.

I'm a Smallville Fan Smallville was the Superman Show for me. I Grew up with Lois and Clark but because I Did not have satellite TV and I Had a Crappy tv antenna that got Only 3 Channels I Could Not watch This Show. Then Latter On in the Early 2000s I Got satellite TV and I Started watching Smallville and I Loved it, Latter on I Started watching Lois and Clark and it was Very Boring This is what Happens when you Try to make a Show that Both Guys and Girls will watch. Guys Want to Watch Superhero Action Shows Girls want to watch their Soap Opera's when you Merge the 2 Together you get a Lackluster Product.
