Really interesting video. Food I ordered come very different from what I think multiple times so it'll be useful. 😂 Just you say that 薯條 is fancy name because it's Western food, but I think a better explanation is that 薯 is used as shortcut for 馬鈴薯 (same in 薯片).

It's very interesting that some ingredients in chinese dishes has a name, and they changed to another name in western food restaurants, for example 西红柿炒鸡蛋 with 番茄意面， 蒙古奶酪 with 芝士蛋糕，土豆 with 薯片/薯条, when it comes to the character 薯， always 薯条/薯片 pop up in my head the first
