I adopted a Chihuahua. The shelter gave her a chip, spayed her and did all the right things. Thanks, guys! But they didn’t tell us, Ginger had been returned to the shelter 3 times, and so nervous about being abandoned. My husband is a mechanic so was test driving a vehicle. He just scooped her up, put her in the vehicle and drove down the road. Ginger started shaking and threw up. Come to find out, she thought he was taking her back to the pound. Now we know. We put her in and harness her up and talk excitedly about where we’re going and what she will get to do. Lots of love! 💖

My son adopted a rescue dog who had been adopted as a puppy, then returned to shelter three years later (we don't know why, but it was a few months into Covid). To say she had abandonment issues is an understatement. She recognizes the expressway the shelter was off of and is always a nervous wreck when we drive on that stretch.

I adopted a 5 year old Cane Corso female, and the shelter wanted to reinforce to me that I would have to pay to return her, she was returned twice.....and it ended there. I've had her for 3.5 years now - and she is the BEST most beautiful dog ever. I took her to a trainer because she weighed more than me.....but I am the alpha, and she is the BABY!! Adopt don't shop!!!!

We adopted a dog from a place that had a whole large litter in one small run. They warned us that she always would escape. They told us to keep her locked up. When we got her home we thought we had made a mistake. She was going crazy in the crate. We live on a farm so we decided that we had to let her go and let the chips fall where they may. We had her for 12 years. She never left our farm on her own once. She was one of the best dogs we have ever had.

I adopted a pitbull from our local shelter. Brought her home, she ate windowsills, holes in the wall, the futon in the room. I ordered all natural dog calming pills from Amazon. She was able to calm down nicely, and is now a goofy love bug ! Smart as neck which is probably one reason she was so stressed ! Great dog, all she needed was stress free help. Don't take on the dog unless you are really going to "rescue" them. I am loved !! ❤❤❤❤❤

He sleeps in my bed when he wants and has bad social anxiety since we Lost his brother when they were 9 week's old . There highly intelligent. And alot of people get them and I don't Care who says thing's happen. If you know things happen then you aren't a good candidate for the Corso. You make it work they get very attached and are great family dog's.everyday with my Corso is like a Scooby Doo cartoon.

3 years ago I went to my local shelter to shop for a dog. I was introduced to a 6 yr old pittie mix that nobody wanted. We were placed in a room so we can get to know each other. She was all over me like a cheap suit when the lady from the shelter came into the room to see how we were doing. Abby did not leave my side, she was asking me in the best way she knew for me to take her home with me. She's been with me since that first meeting. I believe she picked me. In the 3 years we've been together, she has never done anything wrong in the house and when she thinks she has, she apologizes in the cutest ways. Abby is my 4th shelter dog and every one of them have been sweethearts. Abby is now in training to get her certificate to be able to visit nursing homes and children's hospitals.

I was just trying to get him out to play, he was so anxious, but he needed love. I looked in his eyes and with sarcasm said “ oh I don’t like you” and gave him a kiss. his big puppy eyes stole my heart. I fostered him, foster failed. He never left. He indeed picked me. He's 90 lbs and was a difficult situation to deal with initially. After 4 years, I can't imagine my life without him and he's an amazing dog. We have experienced the same thing with our rescue. We loved her from the beginning but she took a bit to trust us. She still has some issues but she is so much happier and that is all we wanted. We got her in January 2020 which turned out to be great timing because we were all home all day as she got more comfortable. Three years later, she is now great with us (most people) but she has some problems with anxiety and can be aggressive with other animals. We just work around her issues and treasure her. If we had just reacted to her behavior when we got her and returned her because she took extra time and care, we would’ve missed out. Everyone, people and animals, needs an adjustment period to recover from trauma. Thank you for supporting animals.

I rescued two pit bull, Sharpae, and Dachsund. They were under 2 weeks old and didn't even have their eyes open good. They both had Parvo and one had an ulcer on her eye. But they were so bonded. I got them up to the point that they were healthy and ready for adoption and they would scream when seperated. I tried to explain that they were so bonded that they spit in their crate with their laws around each other but the rescue facility said they don't adopt siblings out together because it causes behavior problems. When kids play together with friends, it is rather obvious that you wouldn’t leave a rather protective dog with kids alone. Training is crucial in the early days and with a rescue immediate training along, with the love and human protection, the decompression is allowed, but the owners are the Alpha from the start and family and a mutual respect and deep love is formed, but reinforcing the Alpha and training ongoing with regards to stranger interactions and children, who also must respect certain rules themselves.

We aren't a dog home for a few reasons, but we took in a cat from a shelter who'd been starved and who else knows what. She wasn't quite 2yo when we got her and it took her nearly ten years to trust us fully. We thought her being aloof was just her nature, but there was this blossoming that happened all of a sudden and then she was pretty much a regular, sweet cat, but MAN, ten years of love and care to get there. I actually had people tell me I should give her back, like what the heck?! She would literally never have trusted anyone again.

As for the people that first turned him in, superficial ignorants, but it allowed him to find a, hopefully, good, loving, stable home that he deserves. I used to live in Murrieta and went to Animal Friends of the Valleys several times. Very good organization. Thank you for all you do.

What a lovely comment. Thank you for sharing your story about your senior dog. I am all for puppies, but I love it when I hear others welcoming senior animals into their homes and hearts. They need just as much love and care as the puppies. The thing is, a lot of people want a puppy because he/she is adorable, but man! Puppies are a ton of work! I know from first-hand experience, having raised now three puppies, and soon to be a fourth for service work. I would like to be in a space where I can adopt a senior dog or two or three and give them quality lives until they go.

Its not an easy breed doh. As a dog trainer I dont recomment a cane corso to someone who dont have a lot of space or dont do much exercice. If the energy is not spend, they can be a challenge. Not always ok with smaller animals too... But such a majestic dog! 😊

If you adopt a dog, the moral of the story is to stay home with him all that day and night, and preferably have someone home with him for a while. My mom treated our rescue dogs exactly like a new puppy. She would sleep next to the dog (usually on the couch with the dog on the floor), staying close and calm.

Sometimes there are very good reasons for someone bringing an animal back eg if it turns out it just isn't going to get on with other pets in the location. That is sometimes something one just can not know in advance. I used to foster cats for a rescue and a couple of times one of my foster cats was returned due to it turned out someone in the household ended up being allergic to cat.

My parents adopted a dog (Amber) from a shelter a few months ago and she has PTSD from her previous situation. She is very shy with people and cowers a lot but does well with other dogs. She needed another dog to guide her, luckily we have the best dog to do that (Hannah) who we adopted from a shelter about 9 years ago. Amber needs a lot of patience and love and we are dedicated to giving her the life she deserves. I agree with other comments where you really need to make the commitment. The path forward will have its challenges but as the saying goes, nothing worth having comes easy 💕

I've volunteered for six years with our local humane society in training and behavior, so really appreciate these clips. It is a lot of what I do, and it's true, I get so much more than I give. And I am so so happy when one of the dogs I've worked with gets adopted. I also have experienced the disappointment of a dog being returned. For me personally, adopting a dog is similar to a marriage vow -- in sickness and health, til death do us part.

I pray he finds a better place than ever❤ as for Daphne’s life, I pray for peace with her. And giving her a name was more than anyone probably has done for her. I love what you’re doing for these guys and the shelter is amazing.

I’ve adopted dogs here in Cape Town South Africa, and all the shelters insist on dogs being neutered/ spayed before adoption allowed. They say to stop more unwanted dogs coming into the world. I’m totally in agreement with that.

It truly hurts my heart to hear about Logan, I've grown up with large dogs like him, I had a childhood English Mastiff for 10 years. and currently we've had 2 Euro Danes for 7, with a 3rd one for a few months we fostered. People don't seem to realize just how sensitive those larger breeds are. I happy to see you so passionate to help all these dogs ♥

Me too, my heart aches when dogs and cats get returned bc the adopters aren’t always the sharpest tools in the shed you know? I’m not saying that in a mean way but don’t adopt if you’re not prepared to allow them to destress and become accustomed to their surroundings and their new family members. To us, common sense to them they throw their hands up and return the animal. Ridiculous seriously 😒

When a dog get's returned, it breaks my heart. My first greyhound was returned twice before I got him and he was a fantastic dog. He live just over 13 years and he was always afraid I was going to give him away, so I hugged him and all was better. Max lost that fear a year before he passed. I was his human for just over 8 years. I miss him something terrible. --All my dogs are rescues, because they need love just as much as I.

I have had a horrible history with violent, aggressive, selfish men. Rocky, you restore my fath in men and prove that kindness, love through compassion and a strong moral compass, are truly masculine traits. Thankyou so much: I greatly needed to be reminded that there are amazing men out there. The calm, gentle and consistantly generous spirit you carry is picked up immediately by the dogs. They instantly trust your calm and steady spirit. Keep it up. All the best.

He looks almost exactly like my Cane Corso rescue and I just 😢 He was 9 when we adopted him and he came with good sized lumps visible on his back leg and his head just behind an ear. We had a biopsy done and sure enough... they were cancerous. With his age and the progression of his illness (he had more masses inside of him that we uncovered through an ultrasound or something similar) our treatment options were limited. With advice from our vet we were able to spend a good 2 years and 2 months with him and the sheer joy he expressed on his walks and when he got to play in the snow... I know he was happy to share our home. Big Mike was my first dog (of my adult life) and first rescue, and I could not have asked for a better experience (other than having more time with him). I still feel him watching over me sometimes and I am so thankful for the chance I had to share a home with such a beautiful soul. Corsos are not necessarily the easiest dog and I can't recommend them for everyone, but if you are willing to put in the time and preparation needed to learn their body language and how to manage others approaching them... you will not be sorry.
