Constructing the castle started already in 1357. It proved to be an excellent location for toll. Occupied by the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War and
reconquered by Willem van Oranje (of Orange). For a long time the castle was used as a state prison with the well known prisoner Hugo de Groot who managed to escape after two years in the famous book case.
