Locking Rabbet Joints for Strong Drawers - Modified Quarter / Quarter / Quarter Method Drawer Joint

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Make locking rabbet joints for strong drawers when building cabinets. Great woodworking technique for the perfect lock rabbets using just a tablesaw and quality dado blade. Hardwood drawer boxes are ideal, like poplar or maple, but plywood works great for this technique too (unlike dovetail drawers).

It's great to see the craftsmanship going into something so simple. A generation later someone will still be using them with no idea of the quality build, but they'll still be giving good service.

Nice! I want to try this with my M18 palm router and a fence. How would you do this differently if the front of the drawer will NOT be covered? Is it just the dado for the bottom that would need to stop short of passing all the way through? Or would another cut need to be limited additionally?

There are more complicated versions you can research, but I like these because they're simple. Plus, a false front makes fitting the drawers easier. Best to you.

Is there a particular drawer slide you would recommend for a deep er 28 inch drawer?

I like the Centerline slides from Rockler. They measure slightly shorter than the stated length.

Sorry that wasn't clear. The drawer parts are 5/8" thick in my example. Best of luck with it!

KZread is the best form of education today, as long as you find the best teacher. And this gentleman is one of the best to learn from He is very thorough, and is correct with everything he teaches. I wish you much luck, and lots of fun in your shop. I can remember being in the same place as you with drawer boxes, but I had a wonderful teacher, my grandfather. He was a master carpenter, cabinet maker and I just adored him. I can stillvremember the smell of his cherry tobacco that he smoked in an Irish Briar pipe. Not very safe in a shop full of shavings and saw dust, lol. I spent a lot of time in his shop observing since I the time I could walk. By age 6, I was given my own work apron that said Apprentice on it that my grandmother made by hand, lol. By 10 years old I was doing actual projects. I event ran some of the big Watkins machines and handtools he had that were his fathers. The handtools are a collection that started in 1642 when my ancestor came to America to open his own furniture business. Generation after generation there has been at least 3-4 furniture makers in the family, and many hobbyists. Both of my brothers were in business doing the samething and I have been a hobbyist for the past 50 plus years. I never stop learning, and trying new things. Lately I have been teaching myself Japanese and Thai wood joinery. A total blast!! Best of luck!!
