Lockheed CONSTELLATION 'BATAAN' BEHIND-THE-SCENES

Ғылым және технология

Join us on an incredible journey as the Lockheed C-121A Constellation 'Bataan' embarks towards EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023. Experience an exclusive, behind-the-scenes perspective, captured by four strategically placed cameras, documenting every twist and challenge. Pilot Steve Hinton describes it as “The big airplanes aren’t responsive like fighters, but the ‘Bataan’ has hydraulic boosted controls. Even so, it’s pretty heavy, and for such a large aircraft, the cockpit is very small because of its aerodynamic shape,” Hinton said.
"I was really enamored with this airplane, primarily due to its significant historical background and well-maintained state. It's fascinating to consider its evolution, starting from its initial design and manufacturing, to its present-day preserved status said pilot/owner, Rod Lewis.

My first airplane flight was a TWA Constellation in 1950, In 1967 I was a Radial engine mechanic for the USAF working on 4 engine radials, R4360's, R3350's R2800's and any airplane with a round engine. I still think the C-121 is the most beautiful airplane of all, love the sound of a radial engine, smoke and oil and a lot of work to keep them flying.

What a beautiful piece of history to preserve! Thank you for all your dedication to that restoration. I was a very lucky young 6 yr old to experience a Connie flight from Guam to Alameda Naval Air back in the 50's when my Father was in fact the flight engineer on the Mars Martin seaplane Hawaii. Yes, I experience a flight in that one but don't remember it being only 18 months old.

The most beautiful airliner ever designed. I flew from Sydney to San Francisco in a Qantas example in 1957 with stops in Fiji and Hawaii. It took three days. 5 Star hotels overnight included. Silver service all the way. There was a years long waiting list. The competition was the PAA Boeing Stratocruiser that was noisy, slower and crude by comparison as it was a converted B29 bomber. Then the 707 arrived and changed everything. Qantas still has a Constellation in flying condition to this day. It does regular excursions.

@rodbutler4054 - If the ones off of the NE coast were USAF, they were the EC-121 Warning Star models... if US Navy the designation was WV-1 Warning Star. In Vietnam, there were several based out of Ubon Royal Thai AFB in Thailand, for a variety of missions: airborne radar support (for friendlies); radar jamming (enemy); airborne communications relay center for strike aircraft. They had large crews = 20-31 officers and enlisted combined.

Maybe Steve was tired from the long flight = he misspoke when he decribes it's speed (just after the 20:10 time code mark) as "250 mph" which is far less than this aerodynamically-designed 13,000 horsepower beauty is capable of = The Lockheed Constellation's cruising speed is 340 mph and maximum speed is 377 mph at 24,000 foot altitude.
