Lockerbie - December 21st 1988 Newsflashes & Special Report
There seem to be newsflashes from earlier in the day on KZread, but I haven't seen these elsewhere yet, which come from later in the evening and were aired during and after the late film 'Magnum Force' with Clint Eastwood. Alastair Stewart delivers the news, as best as it is known, on this uniquely upsetting evening, 25 years ago.
ITN's graphics department confuse Carlisle with Cardiff at 4:50.

I knew someone on that plane. Liz Marek was an amazing woman who had walked across the USA on the Great Peace March in 1986. RIP Liz.

I was a member of a search team at Lockerbie, our tasking was to locate bodies and radio in their locations also to pick up what personnel effects we could so as not to let them fall into the wrong hands. Our drop off point was on an S bend, next to a river on the winding road between Lockerbie and thundergarth church. By the side of this river we found liz marek’s raincoat, hanging from a tree, identified by her British railcard in the coat pocket. I thought she might have been English but would later learn that she was an American after reading about her in “ on eagles wings “. I’m sorry for your friend and all victims of this diabolical tragedy for those alive and dead and feel better in myself for sharing this with you. On behalf of all the search teams I can say, for us, it was 3 days of fear, sadness and utter bewilderment. Respect from UK.
Denice O'Neill, age 21, was on Pan Am Flight 103. She lived across the hall from me at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and used to come over and watch TV in the evenings with me and my roommates. She was a pre-med student and was returning to the U.S. after working for two and a half months at a hospital in Nigeria. She was in seat 38K.
1988 was a bad year here in Scotland. Between this tragedy and the disaster on the Piper Alpha oil platform, many lives were lost. I was 10/11 that year and live(d) in a small village in the north west highlands and it turned out that one of our teachers lost a relative in Lockerbie. I felt so bad for him and for the children in and around Lockerbie - they didn’t get to celebrate Christmas that year and it wasn’t fair on them.
Yes, thanks for sharing this perspective. I was also 3 years old when this happened and lost a member of my family, so it's really helpful to understand how the news was shared in it's original context (since I have few memories from the time period).

As unfortunate and horrible now as it was then, the Pan Am executive’s statement at roughly 12:59 was an absolute lie.
Pan Am was terribly sloppy with their interline baggage transfer security. Had they been more responsible, perhaps they would still be in existence!

I agree. The Pan Am Flight 103 disaster was the final nail in the airline’s coffin. Pan Am went bankrupt 3 years later.
Overnight programming on ITV in 1988 were not seen or networked across ITV, this meant ITN regular news updates would be seen in many regions at various times. It seems all ITV regions united on this night, to bring a proper live ITN News report during their overnight schedules.
I always remember that night. I was out drinking in the Trough of Bowland and we had come out of a pub just after 7pm. It was a clear starry night and me and a mate just happened to look up spotting a plane's lights going north. It was a large plane anf I always wonder if it was this flight we actually saw!

It definitely may have been; however, London Heathrow is a busy, busy airport, especially in the evenings during that time. I always wonder about how the people who were on the last flight before the fatal incident feel, knowing they escaped certain death. Not only on Pan Am 103, but on TWA 800 as well. The last flight before TWA 800, was flight 880, flying from Rome to JFK. The only difference was Pan Am 103 was intentional, brought down by terrorists. TWA 800 was an accidental twist of fate. Either way, it was so cruel. RIP to the people of those flights as well as the 11 on the ground in Lockerbie, Scotland.

The networked film Magnum Force with Clint Eastwood started at 10:35pm and finished at 12:50am when this special edition news started and the plane was originally due to take off at 6pm but was delayed by 25 minutes
I was 16, flew to London with family for a vacation (from US) on Dec 27. Needless to say we were a bit unnerved. We flew out of Gatwick to go home a week later and security was super tight.
I also have a recording of this very broadcast of Magnum Force on Central, but the person recording stopped the tape a few seconds into that first Central ident, and paused recording during the intial news report.

That’s true. I made that comment before I knew that. Air Malta flight wasn’t it??
So they lied since they had received a bomb threat indeed. Also, several mistakes seen without searching... Cardiff for Carlisle, the times of the last communication and crash also not accurate. They say 258 fatalities (passengers), but that's because one cabin attendant was called to work the flight at the last minute and her name had been added in pencil, thus it didn't show in the original records.

Domine Wimbury the problem is the bomb threat was vague. It was made to the US Embassies in Helsinki and a second place (I forget where). Whether or not they forwarded this to Pan Am is something I’ll have to check, but I believe the threat was against *an* American plane, rather than a specific one. If Pan Am were aware, they’d clearly decided it would be uneconomical to ground all their flights (which is ironic, considering the fallout from this tragedy bankrupted them).

Quite unbelievable that you either died or survived. No serious long term injuries (apart from the mental scars). I'll never forget that. I didn't know about it until the morning when I was eating my breakfast before the last day of school. I just remember seeing the burning houses and then my teacher, who was originally from the borders being very upset that day. A horrible event, the kind of which is thankfully is few and far between these days and the town of Lockerbie thankfully has managed to move on whilst remembering the dead in a dignified manner. Hard to believe that it will be thirty years next month.

Many schools in the UK broke up on that day for the Christmas Holidays
I was a little boy and I remember this strange period at the end of the 80s when there seemed to be a lot of horrible events in the UK. It seemed like every few months something happened.
This was just awful, awful, awful. It happened 31,000 feet up in the air and those people had no idea. I just hope it was really quick for them. I don’t even want to try to imagine the explosion and how it took place and what those people felt and went through. I don’t even wanna imagine it

Good old Gaddafi sponsored this horrendous act of terrorism. I was based in Gibraltar serving with the RN at the time. We sailed towards Libya and viewed American bombers flying over heading for Tripoli. Sorry we missed him, but his support for the IRA made him worse than Saddam.

At 12:46 there is the kind of speech I often make myself! It's strange to hear it on video because I have never done so before. I use 24 hour time in routine speech, although in most foreign languages, which evolved in areas without the inequalities in day length found in Britain, it is hard (or strange) to say things like "nineteen seventeen". People sometimes laugh when I say "I will be back at eighteen", which means six PM of course, but I assume they can understand.
