I referenced this video for this job yesterday and one thing I have to say, is that this is a very satisfying repair to complete. A simple task, but doing one which both makes the central locking work AND makes the car secure again is doubly satisfying.

Thanks for all the excellent detail. First time for me, but not much trouble at all. Repco and Supacheap did not carry the spares, but eBay did. About $22 for a pack of 4! Only needed 1! Great video!

Hot tip for anyone doing this, save one of the spring seats from the old cog assembly when you take it out and put that seat right up the top of the new cog shaft. Makes getting tension on the springs to get the whole thing in the slot a bit easier. Of course one of the door card screws was rusted completely when I did this just now.

I had the same door fail on my AU years ago. Kept on thinking the car must have unlocked itself as my daughter could just open the door every now and then. Turned out mine had the broken gear. I just got a new bit from the wreckers for less than bugger all and yes - it was a very easy job to fix. Still working over 10 years later and so far the only lock to fail

Great video I would suggest you take a photo of the internals when you open the actuator. as a reference and once again a great video.

Good video. My plastic "bit" was not broken. So I left the cables disconnected after screwing the assemble back into the door. Then using myfinger inside the door locked it. Now it is permanently locked. Which achieved my objective. Had to pull the back seat out to get the trim back on, with the door being closed. Could not put the screws back in the trim with the door closed. But the door and the trim are all in place securely. If I am ever have a spare couple of hundred dollars I will pay a mechanic to fix the door properly.

Sure the little motor wasn't dead? These seem common to need replacing too and are in the kits, much cheaper than someone else doing it and not a hard job.

Yeah I had a problem with one of my rear doors on my AU. I ended up playing with the actuator so that the door could not be opened from the outside until I sorted it out. Only thing was that every time the door was opened from the inside I had to make sure I repeated this process as it would unlock the door again. My experience was that I ended buying the kit from ebay but for some reason I just couldn't get it to work. So in the end I just ended up buying a second hand actuator. All I had to do was remove the broken one and replace it. It ended up costing me around $35 from the wreckers. Still probably a little risky buying a used one but in the end it was the easy option and I ended up getting it to work.

@FRDKNG Interesting, perhaps there was a broken wire in the short section of wire attached to the actuator that would have been replaced with the second hand unit but not the new repair kit? Glad it's sorted though, let's not pay it any more attention until we have have!

Great video helped a lot but I had a spring come flying off from some after I took the actuator off and can’t figure out where it was

I wish I knew this earlier ..I've been un-hooking my battery leads and throwing everything thing in my boot because its electronic & no one can steal my things or start my car unless they have time to put battery leads on) I'm fixing this asap haha I'm tired of the battery crap 🤣

I done it was so easy to do but a bf same as a territory interesting

I have a bf wagon that has weird door locking issues , if you have keys in ignition . all the doors try and lock , then it will cycle through lock and unlock several times , i just have to make sure never have the windows wound up with keys in or ill end up locked out . Also sometimes i return to my previously locked car to find the drivers door is now unlocked . Lucky no theives have noticed this so far . Wonder could this issue be caused by the door actuators playing up ? Thanks matt

Can't recall now if it made noise, been too long and my memory is no good at the best of times! But if it's the gear that is damaged it will definitely make noise, if it's the little motor though it normally won't. Good luck mate 👍

What causes it to unlock all the other doors when opened?

Hey Brownie, thanks for making such a brilliant video, I brought the kit from the link description, followed the steps completely but it's still happening, unlocks the whole car, is there something I'm doing wrong? I replaced the motor and on the test it worked about three times then the next day it's happening again, bloody annoying, do you reckon I should get a new door lock assembly? @Ben Pratt Hey Ben, thanks for the kind words mate and glad you're enjoying. So you're saying you replaced one door motor, it worked a few times but now that same one door is not locking or unlocking? If so I'd be checking the wiring between the door and the body of the car for any breaks/damaged wires or getting a cheap multimeter to make sure voltage/signal is actually getting to that motor when you're trying to lock or unlock.

That’s very odd, should be the same even for earlier AU’s right up to BF. I’d say there’s just something in the add where they haven’t listed Fairmonts, same kit will work though.

In the first instance, how does one know which door is faulty at the start? Or, if two doors are faulty?

Mine is giving a grinding/buzzing noise when locking and unlocking but the door still locks and unlocks but i dont think it will for long. Is this the first sign? It sounds like the cog is slipping. Would u recommend this was or just a new actuator? Also u should add Territory to the description as they go all the time on Territory's

Trying to think what else could cause this, the grinding specifically seems to suggest damage in the gear maybe. Everything else I can think of is a simple linear movement but there could be something I'm missing. They're cheap enough so I'd probably start with an actuator repair kit, if it turns out not to be that you'll likely need one in the future anyway if you keep the car! Cheers, Territory is in the description but not the title - starts to look a bit much I thought if I list them all 🤷

I have the opposite problem where the door won't unlock on my Ford Flacon AU.I only have one point of entry as the digi key clagged out ages ago so I have been locking and unlocking the car with the key. Now the key doesn't unlock the door and I had to smash one of the small side windows to get in. Would this be due to the actuator not working? I haven't had the window repaired yet until I can get this problem fixed. I asked and auto electrician and he said that it would be a bung lock. I am assuming that means the actuator. He also said the locks were hard to find for the AU and I might have to get a new door from the wreckers!!!!

I'm a hack and very tired at the time of answering this so will be worth doing further research, but the key not unlocking the door is to me not likely related to the actuator replaced in this video. I haven't really looked at the AU and BA door lock barrels and the connection to the actual latching assembly but on earlier models the connection was a simple metal rod, attached to a rotating plastic clip at the lock barrel end. This plastic clip could break, the rod could become unclipped and either end, it may not move far enough to unlock, or the acutal latch mechanism that is unlocked may not be functioning - all these are issues I've seen on earlier Falcons and could be the case here if it is a similar design. Fortunately they can be checked with the door trim off and having a look/play to see if you can get it locking/unlocking manually. Sounds daunting but it makes a lot more sense once you see it and have a play. Worst case scenario the lock barrels and keys appear to be on eBay cheap enough and could be changed over, will be a little further hassle/cost if having separate keys to open the car and then start it will bother you but there are also lock barrel, ignition barrel and key sets there as well from my quick search. Best of luck.

I've got an AU falcon the doors all lock but it intermittently does not unlock and sometimes will unlock the drivers door and the latch will slightly leave it ajar. When it does not open I cannot open door with a key. And it's very hard to open with inside door handle when locked. 😬

Hey mate iv got the same problem but I have an Fg. Would the process be similar to the ba? Except I just have to replace the actuator altogether because I don’t think you can take them apart like you can with the Ba’s.

@Unite1Wing I don't have experience with them in FG's but your right, doesn't seem to be kits for sale for these so may have to just replace the whole actuator. Imagine the process of doing this will be fairly similar though. Good luck 👍

@Michael Bouboulis Hey mate, really depends how risk averse you are I guess. I’ve never heard any quoted period of time these are good for. Guess there’s not a huge downside if you chose to do them proactively other than time, the investment is pretty minimal.

Not locking at all or cycles to lock, then straight to unlocked again? Not locking at all - remote flat or not programmed? Cycling so it never locks - believe it's normally the drivers door that does this, try lock this with the actual key then hit lock on the remote. If that works sounds like the drivers door actuator isn't working.

Does this work for a 2007 ba mk2 xr6

Years ago at movie world. Some scrum broke my door handle to steal a $30 GPS. I was so piss off.

I have change my actuator but still not locking one rear door - any other suggestions?

@Bronwyn Barnes Maybe start looking for a broken wire. If you have a multimeter check to see if voltage is getting to the plug to the actuator, if not first place to check I’d say would be the wiring running between the body of the car and the door (the section you can see with the door open). As long as it's definitely trying to move then you may be onto something there, perhaps there's some sort of jam or something going on inside that lock and latch assembly above the actuator itself? I haven't had one apart on this particular car but maybe it could be pulled apart to inspect or even just grab another from the wreckers and throw it in? Got a real tough one there, bloody cars hey!

Seems like ford like using cheap plastic parts. This door actuator and the mixer bar for the heater/cooling. Should of stayed with Holden at this point.

My moron mechanic ask $400 to change the whole device; i just wanted to test him; So i followed the steps what you did, i didnt change the motor; i left a simple little red mark everywhere on the device told my girlfriend to take my video while i was painting leaving marks. and put it back again; then i sent my car to the moron mechanics, next day he finished his job and told me he changed everything and put a new lock on. then i asked for the paperwork, i dont know how he made these; next day, i gone with the cops and found he changed the motor thats all; then he agreed the pay me compensation of $2000 and had a charge for criminal activity. lol end of the story, dont trust your mechanic blindly.
