Loch of the Lowes NC0 retrieves her last egg but pale male returns to turf it out again 7-8 May 2024
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Resident female NC0 returns after the pale male had destroyed two of the eggs and pushed the third out of the nest bowl ( • Intruder pale male Osp... ) earlier on the 7th. She pushed it back into the nest bowl again, and overnight she guarded her egg and brooded it at times. In the morning, 8th May, she must have sensed the pale male was near as she started fish calling but those calls turned into alarm calls and she flew off.
Moments later the pale male appeared and immediately set about throwing out the egg again. The sooner that egg gets crushed or thrown overboard the better, then NC0 can concentrate on finding a new mate - looks like pale male is putting himself forward as a candidate. He could seal the deal by bringing a fish, but will he?
Many thanks to Scottish Wildlife Trust for allowing me to capture this footage from their nest cam at Loch of the Lowes.

That egg is now gone, probably thanks to pale male. It got disposed of during a livestream outage, so we don't know exactly when, but it is gone this morning 9th May.

That's a relief, peace for NC0 to get on with life without Laddie. Thanks for letting us know.
Just when you think this situation can't get any sadder...... Poor NC0. Hopefully the egg will finally be removed & NC0 can get on with her life again.

The sooner that last egg is crushed or chucked completely overboard, the better for her. Otherwise her instincts will keep making her protect it, and it's no longer viable, nor could she protect and raise a chick if by a miracle one hatched. Once it's gone, she can get on with finding another mate - pale male is a likely lad..

Fingers crossed the egg is removed sooner rather than later.
Thanks for the updates. This is so sad to watch. 😢

Thanks @Geemeff ❤ I really hope this Male will take NCO a fish. I think he knows exactly what he has done, hopefully he will. Was emotional seeing all this morning & the Male hovered over her once. I have feeling egg is cracked now, you right, sooner it's away the better for NCO. This Male has very shapely legs don't you think. Just hope NCO will stay.🙏🏻

Hello & thank you! @@GeemeffGeemeff Yes I noticed, it's just as well. I saw NCO with a nice big fish last night. Today, there has been a visit by another female Osprey, did you see her? Just when we don't want the situation to become more complicated.
I am sorry to hear of the loss 💔🌈 How long was Laddie/NCO tgther? Was Laddie found and what was the cause of death. Again, sorry. 🦜
If he and NC0 pair up successfully, this year or next, will we come to love him 🤔

The questions are: Can or will she bond with him? Will he bond with her and fulfill his role as a male? -- at the moment to me the former seems more likely than the latter, as the instinct to procreate is no doubt still strong in her, but with him it is not yet clear -- and I doubt she in any way associates him with the disappearance of her former mate

@@eah8101 The unattached male will have equally strong instincts to find a mate and breed, but it remains to be seen who if anyone she chooses this year. A darker male has also been around, and it's that time of the season when the youngsters and unattached start arriving, so there could be a few to choose from.

There was another Osprey this morning @@GeemeffGeemeff I thought it was a female, no rings & a necklace, it didn't stay long.

@@suzycat2026 With the lack of a time stamp, and many visitors at the moment, I'm having a hard time keeping up. But LotL's nest always gets plenty of intruders, I hope NC0 will see off the females and get the males to woo her with fish.
Thanks for the updates Geemeff. I loved watching these two Osprey's the past few years just a sad way for it to end. NC0 took over from Lassie so a new male will take over from Laddie, still a shame how it has happened. Here's hoping next season is a better one for NC0.

Yes, that is the way of their world. It's fine when it happens naturally, but if Laddie's death is found to be by human interference, then that is a terrible outrage and a tragedy. Fingers crossed for NC0..
Very sad indeed.

@@jtate333 I would think so, she's bonded to the nest. If pale male keeps returning, and brings fish, I think she'd accept him. or another - there's been a different, darker one there this morning 9th May. it's wait-and-see time, I'm afraid.
