Loch Lomond - Scottish Folk Song - Fretless Fairbanks Special #4 Banjo

I learned this song myself, and only recently learned the significance behind the lyrics, which made me appreciate it a lot more.
Lyrics:
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
Where me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
O you'll take the high road, and I'll take the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
'Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen
On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond
Where in soft purple hue, the hieland hills we view
And the moon coming out in the gloaming
The wee bird sing and the wildflowers spring
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping
But the broken heart it kens, nae second spring again
Though the woeful may cease from their grieving
O you'll take the high road, and I'll take the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond

Beautifully played and sung Knox. And ancient Celtic and Anglo Saxon (pre Norman) Christianity also had the idea that after death the soul begins its journey to heaven/hell to await the bodily resurrection- and the first few days it visits the places that are dear to it then it takes its treacherous journey as the angels and demons fight over the soul

I didn't know that. That's a neat bit of theology to know. Maybe that's what the actual belief is about - a holdover from insular Christianity

this is differently the first version of this song I can really get down with. powerfully and energetically played as always! I'm from Scotland and live not far from Loch Lomond, I'ts differently a goal to play this tune there

Thanks for the context, makes the song a lot more poignant than it already is! I never thought about what the "high and low road" actually meant. The intro also had the distinct feel of a travelling musician and storyteller, before the days of mass media, including newspaper, when they were responsible for the telling of stories (made up and true ones) and spreading new songs.

A guilty pleasure isn't necessarily something that is bad :) The definition of the word is (something, such as a film, television programme, or piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard), so it was just my cheeky little way of making a joke about enjoying the music from a musician that deserves alot more recognition than he is getting currently in my eyes^^ Besides the Banjo isn't really a instrument that is used where I'm from so my brain always connects it with the most sterotypical things from movies or media in general which is why it's always been overlooked by me in the past, luckly Knox's videos have opened my eyes and ears to the fantastic sound and feel it can bring to the table, and the fact that alot of his stuff seems to be self taught is just mind boogling to me, so there is nothing but awe and admiration from my end!

I heard it the way about the same though in the version I heard the English had told the Jacobite prisoners they'd line them along the banks of Lomond and kill every other one. So as to preserve bloodlines brothers stood next to one another so that no matter the outcome the name and blood would live on. And so this song is sung from the perspective of the surviving brother.
