Welcome to this elementary Mandarin class. I am Sisi Laoshi.
words：
里边lǐmian：inside
外边 wàibian：outside
左边 zuǒbian：left
右边 yòubian：right
上边 shàngbian：upside
下边xiàbian：beneath
前边 qiánbian：front
后边hòubian：back
东边 dōngbian：east
西边 xībian：west
南边nánbian：south
北边 běibian：north
附近 fùjìn nearby
旁边 pángbiān：next to
对面 duìmiàn：opposite
They are all nouns expressing direction and location and can function as the subject, object or attributive.
There are two types of existential sentences
(1)
somebody or something + 在zài + somewhere
图书馆在我家北边。Túshūguǎn zài wǒ jiā běibian. Library is in the north of my home.
(2)
somewhere + 有yǒu/是shì + somebody or something
学校附近有一个邮局。Xuéxiào fùjìn yǒu yí gè yóujú. There is a postoffice nearby the school.
(3)
The difference between using 是shì and 有yǒu
The object in the existential sentence with 有 is usually a general reference。While the object of the existential sentence with 是 is usually a specific reference.
