Brady has a really good grasp on the "art" of asking questions about science topics by now. I am not sure I could name somebody better - and I am a big fan of BBC/PBS style documentaries and many comparable youtube channels. He keeps the questions simple enough to make the topic accessible, yet still gets to the heart of the topic, occassionally forcing the scientists to think for a bit, because the question may be simple, but not easy.

I used to get some great solar observing in when I was a kid with my 70mm refractor. It had rudimentary filters (very unsafe!) and a little table projection screen, where you could put paper and draw. I remember I had done sketches of sunspots on consecutive days. I wish I still had them so that I could roll them up into an animated gif.

In my opinion our star is the most fascinating one, because we can observe it in most detail, detail which we could only dream of, observing other stars (that is not to say that this will not happen at some point in the future)

I chatted with Pete on Twitter. He clarified that the Sun is average in terms of the type of star that it is. It is in the middle of the evolutionary main sequence. However, it just so happens that the occurrence of other types of stars is higher.

I did a little search on horizon episodes and found three titles: "Horizon: Supermassive Black Holes" (2000), "Horizon: Who's Afraid of a Big black Hole" (2009) and "Horizon: Swallowed by a Black Hole" (2012-2013)... hope it helps :)

You guys should do a vid about the solar maximum - and about how it seems theres a downward trend of sun activity in the last 100 years - a bigger cycle than the 11 year one - perhaps we are heading to another 'little ice age' like in the medieval times - i read that was a long period with very few sun spots.

  • @ImyurZero

We have examined many many stars out there, and from the wide range of different types of stars we have examined the sun is more in the average category compared to the other massive stars, and dwarf stars. So it's not average because we're used to it, it's average because we see more stars out there like our own, than we see massive stars, or dwarf stars.

I disagree with his take that the Sun isn't "special." Sure, it's pretty much your "average" yellow dwarf, but it's also very unusual: - It's a single star (most come in pairs or triplets). - It's not associated with a cluster. - It's fairly inactive for a star of its age/type (not subject to violent outbursts like most stars). - It's the only star we know of with life (intelligent or otherwise) despite centuries of searching.

  • @Arcsecant

    @Arcsecant

magicstix0r Also, since it's larger than 90% of all stars (most are red dwarfs) it's not a dwarf, and it's not average. It's huge.

There's a bit of misinformation at 3:00. The Sun is now thought to be brighter than about 85% of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy. So, it's not actually an average star.

  • @torntrof

Based on the contents of all the videos in the rest of his channels, it's entirely possible that Brady is actually a sentient AI developed by the combined science departments at Nottingham to better understand human behaviour and Final Cut Pro. If so, I'd imagine Haranbot 1.0 would require recharging for a few hours after every operational cycle.

I've got a great example of the sun being compared to the rest of the stars! Try asking this one to some of your friends: What is the brightest star in the sky? Most people will mistakenly say "The North Star", your more knowledgeable friends may even say "Sirius", but one with the right mindset will correctly say "The Sun" :) “The more you over-think the less you will understand.” ~ Habeeb Akande

Doesn’t really have an atmosphere to vaporize. It will end up engulfing Mercury & Venus eventually and perhaps Earth. Let’s hope if humans are still around by then our orbit changes.

but our star isn't ordinary, it is unusually stable. Only 10% or so of stars out their are even in the same spectral class. An ordinary star would be a common star and that would be red dwarfs. We only think ours is ordinary because the scale is zeroed out on the most observed star, ours.

I hope he did ;-) Nothing in life is free, I guess before the ads the University payed for the videos. Now that we pay them by watching the ads, the University can use the monney for other projects, the students. It does not matter. The content of the internet is payed by ads, get used to it because its simple. No ads no free content. Using an adblocker is not clever because it destroys free content on the long run.

"KZread is suppose to be FREE and it NOT free if you add ads" - Factually wrong. Assuming its true that you and spend hours creating entertainment and education for others, for free and not just because you enjoy making videos. Good for you. What does that prove? You think everyone else should work for free because u do/can? KZread content was nowhere near what it is now, in quantity or quality, before they implemented the youtube partner scheme. Its a good thing for viewers, not a bad thing

I just checked your channels. Brady is a professional producer and video editor who spends vast amounts of time producing very high quality educational videos & entertainment, using expensive high quality equipment. It's his job. YOU on the other hand are someone who mostly films himself paying computer games, train spotting, and some other hobbies. NOT the same thing. You don't like watching adverts? Then don't watch his content. You are not in the right by demanding that he works for free.
