In all honesty, after living there, from I seen, most people don’t understand that these locals and especially Native Hawaiians, Kanaka Maoli, are taught their culture, history, and heritage just like US citizens are taught about the Civil War, and all of our history and stuff. Now you get tourist overstepping all the time, and sometimes even breaking in desecrating what locals know to be pretty much holy(sacred).

Please stop with this propaganda. The VAST majority of tourists are extremely respectful. Especially Japanese tourist from Japan. Yes, there are tourists who definitely disrespect the land and the environment, but there are also locals (including Hawaiians) who also disrespect the land and the environment. I go fishing all the time, and all the time I see locals leaving an entanglement of fishing line behind, plastic bags, rubbish, plastic lures, etc. I used to live by a public park. Every weekend, locals would cruise at the park, smoke weed and hang out. The next day, get beer bottles all over the grass, empty food containers and potato chip bags strewn all around the place, etc. These AIN'T TOURISTS who are leaving this trash behind. Bottom line: Get both disrespectful tourist AND disrespectful locals. And also get respectful tourists and respectful locals.

I’m from San Diego area! I have gone to Hawaii and loved it but hate being a touristy. I am from a surf town. We have always hated tourists soooo much. When I go places I don’t like to do touristy stuff, just enjoy nature like a local and socialize with the native people and be immersed in culture politely. I’m ethnically ambiguous(black and white) so even the indigenous people didn’t take me for a tourist and actually treated me really well. They are some of the nicest people if you are respectful and interested in the amazing way of life they have. Some even said I should move there as I am the kind of person who really fits in well. I found it much more of a fit for how I am than California. I would only feel comfortable living there if I live in a way that respects the Islands and the indigenous people, as a welcome guest/permanent resident. It is very frustrating when people come from far and wide, but up property making it hard to even afford to live in your home land, pollute and crowd the place.

Now in more recent, and now, look at the news for what is happening at our borders. These people coming in illegally, taking $ from government, stealing, raping, killing, bringing massive drugs. Multi, multi, multi, thousands of them and the legal people and vets that fought for the U.S., including Hawaii’s freedom, are homeless all over the streets, in weather that is dangerous to be out in. Not saying you should like tourists coming in, but at least they are bringing $ with them, unlike what the mainland is suffering with. Yes, the haole’s more than understand. We can’t deny that people not from Hawaii go to fancy restaurants here it is fun and all but you should go to local places some locals are trying to pay rent, keep the shop going and pay child support so people not from Hawaii please be careful and mindful of what you are doing. There’s a bunch of trails on private property and tourists always clog up residential spaces to get to the trails to a point where fire trucks and ambulances can’t get through.
