Taking Id doesn't matter, because by the time someone looks into the cat being stolen, it has already been refined into raw material. Even if it hasn't been refined, there's no way to prove that a cat came from your vehicle. You can only prove that it came from the same make and model vehicle you have. The only way to actually stop these thefts is to put some kind of serial number on the cats, which some companies already do. If enough companies do this then a law can be passed that forbids scrap yards from buying cats without taking down the serial number along with that persons id. Then you can actually prove a stolen cat and hit shady scrap yards where it actually hurts.

These aren't deterrents, this is a sheep-scam. The motion alarm is going to go off to any critter underneath the car, which is very common when it's raining or cold. The strap is easily broken and moved out of the way by just cutting the metal straps that hold it on. This is a get-rich-quick scheme for the makers of CatStrap. If you want to deter catalytic converter thefts, consult your local automotive fabricator. They can create cages that can be bolted/welded to the chassis that surround the cat to create more things to cut through, hopefully making saw batteries drain quicker or saw blades breaking/bent so thieves are caught or flee with nothing. Maybe WTOL 11 should have someone with automotive experience give their opinion first before an inexperienced reporter takes the story. Just made the news station look like fools.

I don't get it.... 1) Is that material around the cables sufficiently fire proof. 2) How is this supposed to stop anything? They'll just cut through the pipe towards the cable. Once the pipe is cut the converter still comes off without ever needing to cut the cables. Those exhaust clamps are quicker to cut than the actual pipe is. In fact a pair of bolt cutters can lop those off in a few seconds. This is as much a scam as the actual theft of your converter.

They're looking for OEM cats. Particularly hybrids. Priuses have been especially targeted because the factory one has a significant larger amount of precious metals than most other vehicles. There are prius owners in non-carb states, they're taking off their own factory cats, selling them legitimately. And putting $200 cats back on. Or storing their OEM cat someplace safe. California New York Colorado and I think Oregon require OEM cats for you to pass your smog test. So the crappy part in those states is not only is the thief stealing your cat he's also probably taking your car off the road permanently. Insurance company is likely to do a write-off. If you call Toyota and ask them what the cat costs for a 2008 Prius they're going to tell you $3,000. More than the car is worth, And you end up possibly losing your vehicle.

First of all, looks like it’s held on by a couple exhaust clamps, which I’m pretty sure could be made to go away in about 2 minutes with a cut off wheel…second of all, I don’t know how inept a thief would have to be to take 25 minutes to get through a couple of 1/4 inch steel cables given the right tool…a cutoff wheel or a sawzall with a metal cutting blade. And neither one of those is that expensive. And if your thief didn’t mind spending a little bit of extra money, he could blow through the pipe and strap on both ends of the cat with a acetylene tipped wrench in about 30 seconds. I’ve seen pictures of full on rebar cages welded around cats, welded directly to the frame rails. Now that would take some time and determination, even with the acetylene.

If someone touches the converter then it deploys filling the lungs , eyes, mouth full of pepper spray. Follow up with an alarm going off. This one isn't hard to build if you know what you are doing but legal issues may arise if you kill (choking) or blind the thief from this device. (d) Install a compressed water system. If the thief gets under the car and goes for the cat then high pressure water gets deployed like a sprinkler which basically stuffs any electric cutting tool not to mention covers the thief with water encouraging them to get out. A non toxic foot dye could be added to make them red / blue etc . With an auxilary compressor and water tank installed in the boot / trunk you could keep the spray going for a few additional minutes while the alarm is going off. (e) Build a lock up garage with motion sensors and cctv. Park car in there.

The only way to really fight it is for new laws and regulations to be put in place. Requiring all cats to be engraved with the vehicle vin# at the factory, A database of the owner and regulations requiring junk yards and others that buy them to confirm the Vin numbers on the cat and confirm they are not stolen.

@@51-FS how can you not notice that your cat has been removed? The car will get insanely loud If the exhaust is open right behind the headers... Wich is where the Cat ist normally placed. And lets assume you are deaf... Your Check engine light will come on almost immediatly.

Its cable tied on, cut the ties, unbolt the 2 ‘U’ bolts. The alarm is right there, rip if off or put the grinder to it and it will stop in a second. Now it would deter may be but some flaws i see. Constructively, is there a way to weld this in several places to the pipe and not use ties? And the alarm…can it be placed out the way may be under the hood and the wires hidden? Some additional brackets made into the process when rods are inserted that would allow the welding to be done.

News crew: Do you realize you are 45 seconds into this video before we get the first clue what the idea is? Cut the happy talk and get to the details. Great idea by the way.
