    I would love to see clutch pencils become more popular. I discovered clutch pencils over a decade ago and they quickly became my favorite writing instruments.

    I only learned recently about clutch pencils when I got one in an art supply subscription box. They quickly became my favorite. They're so much easier to keep sharp than regular pencils, so I have a few with different types of leads. It makes drawing so much more relaxing for me. My first clutch pencil was one of the big ones with extremely thick lead but the others are the thinner ones.

    I picked up a 5608 at New York Comic Con of all places last year and I love it. What drew me to it was the build quality, the size and the cool 50's lettering on the side. I also have the Toison D'Or 5900 but it's not as portable as the 5608. Both are great!

    I draw and doodle and Kohinoor is my go to brand. They're built really solidly and cost a lot less than other brands that are as well made. I favor the metal bodied ones. I have a boxed set of 2mm with the colored leads. I have a collection of 5.6s with Kohinoor's metallic leads in them which are spectacular. My favourite is that magic pencil.

    I used them at school in 80s. Later Pentel 0.5mm pencils came and these are not used anymore, but they used to be very common in Czechoslovakia. Well ... later they were plastic with lower quality and that old plastic was not chemically stable, it somewhat dissolved when it touched rubber or something. Besides of writing we used them to blow small paper balls, orange peel and so on on schoolmates :-) Not sure about marking, I think Koh-i-noor, Toison d'or and Hartmund was one company, maybe owning several brands and making pens, chalks, inks and various drawing tools. Funny is that I don't know black one, but they have unchanged design since at least 70s, my parents and grandparents had the very same.

    I bought my first Koh-i-Noor leadholder in 1970 and loved it until I lost it in 2014. It was the same black & Ivory metal, but smaller than the 5900 - size 9 mechanical pencil lead fit it (blue lid). Trying to replace it, I now have two 5900s, and a couple of yellow ones, but they are larger and hold the 2mm lead - I cannot find my smaller Toison D'Or Versatile. Would love to find a replacement for my ol' favorite!

    I have a 5347 (initially had two of them - read below to find out why it's one now) and one of the magic variety as well (5340), the 5347 has no point sharpener but you can get suitable stand-alone sharpeners for the large leads from Amazon, the only problem is that they can take a while to arrive as they are not standard stock or 'add-on' items. Ordered one and still waiting for it to turn up... I found the magic leads to be highly unusual at first and could not initially see the point in them (however the magic colouring pencils from Koh-I-Noor have combinations that blend together and make more sense). I then watched a video on youtube about it and found how rotating it while writing/shading produced some nice rainbow effects and how shifting angle of the pencil affected the mix of colours coming out. I can't see the magic leads being to everyone's taste though, I have had some fun with it and my 5 year old niece was suitably impressed - she now sports a 5340 (so that's where the other one went) in her canvas roll of colouring pencils with a magic lead installed.

    I like using fountain pens or gel ink pens that put down nice black lines. But I need pencils for college, so is 2B good for dark lines that don't require alot of pressure. Are there darker leads?

  • @WoodGraphite

    @WoodGraphite

    8 жыл бұрын

    +frank123612 Pencils are great for work like that! You can get pencils as dark as 9B, but then smudging becomes you issue. If you want a smooth and easy writer, that gives dark lines, look at B / 2B pencils. Better quality pencils tend to be smoother, as the graphite formulation is better. Blackwing make some really lovely writing pencils, the 602 or the MMX (original black one) are good starters. If you're based in Europe, take a look at Staedtler Noris in 2B, or a Koh I Noor Triograph in B or darker. Japanese pencils tend to be darker right out of the box, so a Tombow Mono 100 in 2B would be deliciously dark and smooth or maybe a Mitsubishi Uni-Star if you want something a little cheaper. Generally, once you go past 3B your lines are too smudgey to be of much good for long term notes. I use the dark pencils like sharpies, to sketch out and make diagrams etc, that tend to be short life. Feel free to send any questions or ideas to woodandgraphite@gmail.com. If there are a few people with similar questions, I'd love to do a video discussing all these topics, give people a crash course in pencil tech haha! Thanks for showing interest! Tj

    "loads of lead holders" You have no other brand than Koh-i-noor. You should get a Staedler Mars Technico 780 C.
