Loading My Kayak On Subaru Outback

Спорт

I just bought a new (used) Subaru Outback and had a tournament the following day, so I quickly had to figure out how I would be able to lift my Hobie Lynx up and secure it on the factory roof rack. I have always had the Yakima solo boat loading bar that pulls out from the front crossbar and allows me to lift only one half of the weight of the boat at a time making things much easier for me. But since my new Outback comes with factory installed crossbars, I really want to figure out how to work with those and not have to buy and install a whole new roof rack. It was a little harder than loading on my Honda Accord mostly due to the height difference but really wasn't much of a problem at all!

    if your worried about scratching your car when loading. You can use a bathroom rug on top of rack over lapping doors .

    Hi Melissa, I have been using either a good size pool towel or a yoga mat to place them between two bars, and then I place my Lynx on it and push up on my Highlander. It works very well. Congrats on your new car!

    Thanks! Yeah I noticed I was tearing up the side of the roof rack I was using to pivot the kayak, so I am putting a shirt or a towel over that edge now for loading.

    Melissa Yay you bought a new car! Now we don't have to worry about you having car trouble going to and from your tournaments. The crossbars should be fine with the foam pads and you have easy to reach tie down rails on each side. It's also got a lot more room in the back for all your gear. Perfect! Congratulations! Now I can watch your relaxing channel without tow trucks and police rescues. Fish on Lady! 🐟🐟👍👍

    Another benefit of the Sub is you can drop the seats and sleep in the back instead of putting up a tent if your camping in stormy weather.

    I'm very excited about that option! I've slept in my Saturn going cross country a few times years ago but when I loaded my Accord it was too packed to put a seat back, so I am looking forward to having that option again!

    You might be prudent to look at the Yakima Showboat 66 - it allows you to load from the rear and roll it up.

    Depending on the year of your Subaru, there should be a tow hook with your spare tire (looks like a large bolt with a circle at the end) that you can use as a tie down point. It screws into the front or rear bumper (use a flat screwdriver to pop the little cover off).

  • @GirlGoneFishing

    @GirlGoneFishing

    Yeah I have that screw in thing for the front and back bumpers, but the dealer said it wasn't supposed to be in there for long, so it would be another thing to set up and tear down each time, and it already takes me forever! So I am going with those little handles you slam in your hood with a loop sticking out for the front tie-down and it seems to work well.

    Put a towel on the hatch. Put the kayak at an angle from the back. Lift the front on the towel then go to the back and lift and slide it right on. Very easy. I have an Outback also.

    I have an Outback too and was worried about scratches. Now I just use the middle plastic section between the bars like the bar. Lift and just slide it around. Super easy. I also use the Thule ratchet ropes to anchor the nose and back, then just go around the two bars with cam straps. I run highway speeds with no problem with this setup. I have a 2020 so the roof rack has extra holes in the front and back to run the rope cams. Not sure why they closed them on the new models.

    What do you tie the nose and tail to? The sales guy told me there were no frame loops on these (mine is a 2019) unless you screw the bolt loop into the bumper. I ended up getting those loops you shut in the hood for the nose tie-down to be safer.

    There is an under frame tie off point with 3 holes in the center under the engine. I have the same model and use this for my bow line tie off point with S hooks.

    On mine I have the kayak upside down so the wind lift is less cause some wind will push the nose down while the wind off the hood/windshield lift up, but I have drive hole just at the top of the windshield to relieve some of that upwind. I also use those hood latch loops you mentioned with some Perfect bungess. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZneCtJR7grfecbQ.htmlsi=dMurfuAW__aQNUsQ

    I made a video loading a heavier kayak on a taller vehicle and it pretty much does the same thing you described here. You are really only lifting half the kayak at a time. However, I wanted to also share that I show how I tie down the kayak and I have yet to have any loft issues doing it this way. Good luck in you your fishing adventures! kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z36G0takeMy6qqw.html
