U are doing great ! I worked in a sale barn . A 1500 lb Holstein springer heifer kicked a gate so hard into the top of my nose blood was running down my face which made me more embarrased than hurt because it was where cattle entered the sale ring so everyine saw me when the door opened . Never underestimate how hard and fast they can kick a gate .

One good tip, never get in between a cow and gate if the gate is close to closed. She can push against it and pin you up against the fence. I watched a guy in a sale barn get killed like that.

The first thing I noticed is when you were loading the Jerseys in the nose of the trailer and one of them kicked the gate out of your hand, dont stand right behind the gate or right in the path of a cow coming back on you. Always stand in a way where you have an escape route, whether it be escaping a mad cow or a kicked gate. Also, always use your gates, especially in a new salebarn you havent been to before, especially around kill cows. You dont know when one of those wirey ol hootchies might turn around on you and might decide your their next victim. I would also take 5 minutes to explore a little to each new loadout place, especially if youre by yourself, and familiarize yourself with it and know it before loading out

Next time push the gate into the pen when you get the cows that way they are not getting stalled by a narrow space, plus the gate would help you push them out. You got to improve your cattle handling ability cause there is a lot of livestock owners out there that are really picky with how their livestock is handled. For example I would out right tell you to not use the stock prod on my cows, utilize the corral system to push them forward instead. The stock prod makes them panic, therefore they would look for a way out and if they have to go over you to get out they will do so.

Jerez Iwiski what would you rather do give them a quick jolt or hit them and prod them with a stick. Some cows in front of the line don’t move and you can reach over and give them a quick jolt to move them forward hitting them and whacking them leaves bruises under the skin and he’s inside of the gates to get inside the trailer to shut the ones in there faster.

I love "cattle owners" that know everything, and us who haul them everyday are obviously to fucking stupid to do our end of the industry. The last prick that told me how to haul cattle, which I have done for 30 years, got told to haul them himself. And guess what, he got himself hurt doing it "his" way. Had some twit in Clovis get all anti hot shot. It took almost 2 hours to load 3 loads of homegrown springers. He and his idiot son beat the hell out of them, and us and the Mexicans that worked there just watched shaking our heads. The buyer blew up, and told the guy, we load our way, or he could goose neck the next 6 loads to the sale barn. The 6 were loaded in 1 hour 15 minutes, and maybe a dozen got a hard buzz.... The hug em on the bus bullshit gets US hurt. And you cattle men aren't paying us for broken bones, or worse.

@@christianlequoix7473 I don't get what you're saying. You say some twit and his son in Clovis were beating the hell out of them and as a result took too long to load them, but then you are say it doesn't do to hug em on the bus. I'm not getting ya. Edit: I see, hot shot means cattle prod, so because they refused to use the cattle prod they compensated with beating them, which is using more force than the cattle prod. I got it now.

I'd use the gates to push the cows instead of bringing it behind you. I always use my gate in the trailer to push them into the nose. I've had a few run back on me abd the gate has saved me more than once. It's easy to get comfortable with them and let your guard down. That swing gate near the chute is designed the lock if they try to run back. You standing in front of it kind of defeats the purpose. Stay safe man!👍

Gate etiquette my brother will save you some teeth and stitches in the long run. I wish that barn thought it over but having that sheet metal at the worse spot where you could at least wrap that chain underneath that sucker rod would make me feel better. I’ve seen those chains snap when cattle hit it plenty of times because of them using only 1 link on a 2 ft chain instead of utilizing the whole chain itself. Stay safe.

I don't know what the rules are in the US, but here (Europe) the lame jersey and the 2 horned animals would have been a breach of transport rules. The lame one due to not fit to travel and mixing horned with polled is not allowed here either. Since it is often the driver that pays the fines, making sure the animals are allowed to travel and travel in the group they are in saves you a lot of money and trouble.

Cattle aren't poor or helpless. They are animals, not people. Like all animals they function primarily on instinct not emotion. They are indeed frightened going into narrow openings like an alley or trailer because instinctively that can be a dangerous place that they could get stuck and/or attacked by predators.
