Loading a .50 Caliber Hawken Muzzle loader. Muzzle loading -looking for does.
Loading a black powder rifle is a bit different than they typical shotgun or rifle. My muzzle loader is a cap lock .50 caliber Hawken. I use Pyrodex powder measured out instead of the pellets so it's pretty old school.
I demonstrate loading my rifle as I prepare for a doe hunt.

Most IMPORTANT tip of all. If you' re going to do this in what is obviously your dining room or kitchen make sure your wife won't t come home before you finish!

Nice video Eric. I'll be dusting off my Hawken after Christmas for our late season flintlock season. I'm not very successful but have a blast!! Thanks for sharing!👍

HuntingFarmer Flintlock! Keep it dry, but you know that! Thanks for watching! Our deer are laying low after gun season and muzzle loader season. They’ve come out during a snow storm and a brief cold snap to feed in our little soybean patch, but that’s only 2 days in the last 2-1/2 weeks. My son got a buck with an in-line muzzle loader last Tuesday, smaller 2.5 year old, but still nice for him. I passed it in bow season and the gun opener. He’s in my video from Nov 19. Hard to see him though, I need a better camera for that type of filming.

@@steffenoutdoorswi I still get an adrenaline rush every time I shoot one. It's my favorite gun to hunt with.
It might be helpful for you to mark your ramrod in order to be able to tell if the bullet is fully seated. After a few shots it becomes much more difficult to fully seat the bullet which is important.

Yup, every 50 seconds if you are good and quick, I just hope my cap doesn't hang.
I just happened upon this video. This morning I was at the shooting spot testing some powder I made. Kind of ironic. I don't believe I have ever set at the dinning room table and loaded my rifle, I've never set and loaded it. At times it seemed like you were reaching over your head to do things. I'll have to take my chair when I go shooting again. I might enjoy it. Even when I take my bench rest I always get up to load a rifle.

Easier to video that way , lol.
I love my 54 caliber Hawken.... took a doe a few years ago. Cleaning is key I find you will rarely if never get a follow-up shot. But if your rifle has been cleaned and prepped a follow-up shot is totally doable. In my experience( which isn't vast) your first shot is the the only chance you'll get . Cleaning is key and very involved to get these guns clean I shoot Triple 7 FFg cleans up nicely .Guys with modern guns dont know the love that goes into firing one of these beautiful rifles , its what makes it satisfying . Nice video thanks for sharing .

I was gifted a TC White Mountain Carbine and have been learning as much as I can before early deer season arrives. I didn’t know you could use lubed patches for your shots. I’ll have to try that when I take mine to the range. Thanks for the video.
@steffenoutdoorswi

Oh, always use lubed patches. After 4/5 shots at the range, you’ll want to clean/scrub it good because the buildup will affect your trajectory. Lube is your friend. Don’t plug your nipple with lube though, lol.
Good instructional video sir. Just an FYI, I'd recommend that the hammer be in half cock when loading. Loading will be much easier. It helps push any air from the barrel & nipple area and assures you get powder seated in that area. I've been doing this kinda shooting for almost 50 years. Also maybe give the barrel a tap with the back of your ball seater after ya pour powder in. just something I learned over the years. Good luck happy hunting.

I have powder, cap, ball and patch in what is referred to as a speed loader or pre-load. I typically use a ball starter after that to get the ball 4-5” into the barrel.
Can you tell me how much pyrodex you used I would like to know?

70 grains. Works well for me.
hello, can you tell me how many grains of powder you use with the round ball?
@steffenoutdoorswi

I use 70 grains and it is super accurate out to 80 yards or so, probably much more. My eyes don’t work like they used to so much beyond that the weak spot is my eyes on the iron sights. Keep in mind that the “magic” number will vary per firearm. My father has the same rifle in a a Thompson Center and it won’t shoot round balls well at all so he uses 2 pellets and Sabots.
