Join me on board 3 LNER Class 800 Azuma’s on a day out finding out what their 1st class service is like.

We also talk a walk about both the 1st class coach to see what’s on offer.

Great vid as always. Interesting note: my great great grandfather John Dobson helped design Newcastle Central in the 19th century.

Cheers mate, thanks for watching. I think Newcastle Central Station was John Dobson’s best work, an amazing piece of architecture he also did a lot other structures throughout the city and quite rightly a street was named after him. John Dobson Street. Thank you to your family.

The last time I was in the UK was 10 years ago and the Doncaster lounge was locked then as well. The breakfast looked small as I am sure they used to serve black pudding. Nice video. All the best from Thailand.

A really good informative review, subscribed 😉 A few times each year I take a return trip on the LNER Azuma from York to Inverness. My last trip was a couple of weeks ago and have similar views on the whole experience. Seats and legroom: York to Inverness is 6.5 hours and the seats in first class are a much better proposition for that length of journey. Standard class seats are very rigid and with very little padding. Leg room in both classes is great, much better than other operators. First class lounges: I can only comment on York and that has a nice lounge to sit and work if you're waiting on a connection. As you pointed out, not much on offer other than coffee, water, crisps and biscuits. Food and drink: I was told by LNER that food and drink are "complimentary", so there's no guarantee as to what, if anything, will be on offer. In my experience menus will often change or the stock will be so limited that they've run out if you're further down the carriage pecking order. The Kings Cross to Inverness is advertised as Dish but is often downgraded to Deli. I've never been lucky enough to be on a service with the Dine menu. On my recent trip outbound they were actually serving the Dish menu and the asparagus tortellini was very good. On the way back, with cancellations affecting services, the Dish menu was replaced by a pared down Deli menu. Value for money: For the journey I take LNER is very competitive. For a 6.5 hour trip in standard class I've paid between £30 and £50 for an advance ticket. If the uplift to first class isn't that much then I'll take the offer for one or both legs. If not then I'll put a bid in on the Seatfrog app which is affiliated to many rail operators. On the return I'd booked a first class ticket and on the outbound, a standard ticket. I won the auction for an upgrade on the outbound for £15 which was worth it for the comfort and for food and drink. LNER service: I've always found the staff in the lounges, on the trains and at the stations brilliant. My last trip but one was delayed over an hour by a track issue. I received an LNER notification and for delay repay, clicked a link and 2 days later my full fare was returned. My last trip, the train was cancelled from Inverness due to flooding. LNER sent me an email to say I was due a full refund, clicked the link, case raised and money was back in my account quickly. Very different to EMR. I always book direct with LNER, makes things much easier and somehow I've accrued a good credit to use against tickets or food on board.

Hi mate, thanks for watching - appreciated. York and Newcastle have nice lounges whereas Leeds is not, there's no Windows and it feels quite claustrophobic. LNER are competitive price wise and feel that there are good costs out these, I also use Seatfrog to try and get a cheeky upgrade where possible. the food is a bit hit and miss as menus change which is the only downside really.

Great video Just a quick question please .. My wife and I are travelling from Newcastle to Edinburgh this week, leaving at 10:42. We bought standard class seats, but have recently heard about the ‘Seatfrog App’ which can sometimes give you the opportunity of upgrading to First on the day of travel at a bargain price. We’ll give it a go. I see for our train it is the ‘Dish menu’ which will probably mean a bacon roll and a cup of coffee. Is this simply offered to every passenger after they board the train ? Obviously the train will have be travelling for about 3 hours before we get on. Regards from Whitley Bay

The trackside bar with a railway view looked good, and when I lived in Hungary this type of bar was pretty common even in small stations, but why on earth do they have to serve decent beer in a throwaway single-use plastic pot that looks as though it's designed for a naughty and tantrum-prone toddler to throw around. This sort of single-use plastic is terrible for the environment, and I always feel it ruins the taste and enjoyment of the beer. This is probably done to save the wages of someone to wash the empties if they used real glasses, or the usual excuse nowadays for any sort of poor or non-existent service.....staff shortages.

I find it really annoying that they no longer offer the Full English on every morning train. The last few years I've been doing short trips to York each autumn for a couple of nights, and extending my time there by catching an early morning train. I used to really enjoy and look forward to the breakfast. Now the same train doesn't offer the Full English and I'll have to put up with a bacon roll.

Very good video and review. It seems to me this Deli/Dish/Dine malarkey is just a ruse to not serve a full English on 2 out of 3 trains - ridiculous given the prices that First class can be. Why can't they just have one menu for every train! First class lounge being closed was poor (albeit not the most exciting experience) and switching menus is misrepresentation (although I suspect there's some small print that says this can happen e.g. due to deliveries). A good First class deal is attractive for solo travellers with the single seat option. I'll be trying LNER First going to Newcastle for the first time next week. Looking forward to it.

Changing the menu is a copout imo. The Dish and Deli menus are obviously considerably cheaper, and in my view, if you aren't given what you pay for/expect, then that is a breach of trades description, and a breach of contract really. So in that case, I would fill my bag with snacks from the first class lounge to get my money's worth. After all, you pay almost triple the standard price because you expect a certain level of service.

@@Bungle2010 The food IS complimentary when you buy a first class ticket, so you pay for it when you buy a ticket. Food is not included with standard class tickets. So, if you buy a first class ticket, and it states what you can expect for the particular ticket you buy, then that is what you should receive. So, if I feel that I have been wronged, then I shall try and make up for that in other ways, ie, take more snacks from the first class lounge than I would normally take.
