Tom Sawyer is an American archetype, Twain draws from the best traits of his age to create a character that can fit into any period. I'm sure Neil recognizes these traits and in a sense it models his life.

Catch the spit. Alludes to Twain. Tom and Huck commonly sealed their bargains by spitting on the palm and shaking hands. It's calling for a personal commitment.

Surprises, songs after song, even for me. The Analysis of Tom Sawyer is one of my prefered one. I discovered so much from a song I thought I knew. Unbelievable what we find when we listen.

@@GuylainPrince Totally agree, sometimes we may think we know a lot about it but you still discover more. I sometimes get into the music and vocals and I do love good lyrics but when you actually dive into the words it's something else. Thats the art of music :) amazing.

One quibble: in English, you most certainly can "catch the drift". It means to understand the overall meaning of something. For example: "I catch your drift." => "I see where your argument is leading."
