One difference is, Liza sounds like the child she is when she sings this. Judy at that age sounded like a grown up. But Liza still sang it very well. That's a hard song to live up to.( Hard voice to live up to)

I've seen interviews saying she promised her Mom she wouldn't sing this song because Judy wanted to be remembered for it. Liza said she always sings it at home in the shower etc. She looks and sounds like Judy, both are stars. Judy was one of the hardest working kids and adults in show biz. Love her.

Although there are places in this song where Liza sounds like her mother, her overall tone doesn't. This rendition is higher pitched than Judy's, so Liza sounds younger than her mother's version from the Wizard of Oz. Judy Garland conveyed so much emotion in every note she sang that it made you feel her no matter what the song was. To me, nobody compares to Judy Garland; and I don't think Liza ever wanted to. She's a great talent in her own right.

A good book to read ......... "Finding Dorothy" by Elizabeth Letts. Guaranteed to make you cry when you read how Judy Garland was TOTALLY ABUSED during the filming and production of "The Wizard Of Oz", and her BITCH of a mom encouraged it. Not only was she abused, they even kept her drugged up. I will NEVER be able to watch that movie again without bawling my eyes out.

Liza is a good singer. She doesn't have her mother's blow you out of the water singing voice, but she sings well enough and by golly can sure put on a show! She definitely inherited her mother's ability to put on a show and keep the audience attention.

Anthony C She does! Except Liza's voice in the clip is still on the childish side. She didn't have a grown woman sound yet. You can hear the child like tone in her high register. The rich lower register is a dead ringer for her mom's. Judy was known her remarkably mature womanly tone as a young girl. she was a contralto.

The young girl here singing "Over the Rainbow" would later, and not that much later, give a brilliant performance as Sally Bowles in "Cabaret" and would be performing the "Mein Herr" number using a chair as a prop/dance partner with choreography of Bob Fosse.---Even in this youthful, early performance we can already see the beginning of Ms. Minelli's own distinctive quality as a performer.

Judy Garland's voice sounded flawless when she sang Over the Rainbow in The Wizard of Oz, other than that it wasn't really flawless maybe because when she got a little older from her voice it began to change which would be logical_ but there's a movie where she sings about a trolley 🎵🎶ding ding ding goes the trolley...🎶 there her voice sounding Flawless as well, still I haven't seen any other movies yet but I will check them out. still she was a beautiful woman although she had her weaknesses as we all have_ men, women, kids because we are only human not human and God as Christ was and is. But about her daughter Liza Minnelli_ she sounds like she is still being trained by her mother but she still can't get it right, not as right as her mother would want it. and maybe that was one of the problems. but we all have family problems it is part of life in this Fallen World. ❣🕊

She sounded like her mother but I think she gave a very nuanced and authentic performance. The last one was like ‘ I am Liza Legend Broadway Minnelli darling!’

Judy Garland & Liza Minnelli: both my Mom's fav singers/entertainers, She must have caught Miss Garland live, along w/many other broadway/vegas stars & opera stars too. Mom carried "Show Tunes" on her "harrington piano quite well, like her mom(Bertha Stahl) & brother, Jerry. wish i had their skills & musical ear(written 100's of poems, songs, a book/short story, play 3 instruments, don't have "families' talent, nor do i sing) "que cerra"

Interesting. For most of her career, Liza was strict about never singing Over The Rainbow. If anybody requested it she'd say: "It's been sung". I always thought that was smart and classy. I knew she eventually sang it in later years; I didn't know she'd already done it as a child.

I think what she's been strict about is not trading on her mother's legacy by relying on her repertoire, though occasionally she has sung songs that Judy sang at one time or another, but never the ones that were chiefly associated with her. Strangely, Judy doesn't seem to have bound Lorna to a similar promise, with the result that a while back Liza was touring with a show called *Songs My Father Taught Me,* while Lorna toured with a show called *Songs My Mother Taught Me.* I think the promise was good for Liza (and for her fans) in that it forced her to develop her own unique repertoire, and I have to think and hope that this was part of what was in Judy's mind when she asked for Liza's promise. On the other hand, it has always seemed to me a little unfair, because who has a better right to sing Judy's songs than her own kids? It's also startling to realize how many of the songs Judy habitually sang throughout her career were drawn straight from Al Jolson's repertoire -- even "You Made Me Love You," one of her earliest hits. Whose songs were these, really?

I love Liza's early performances. This one is very rare, because Liza almost never covered Judy's songs. Interesting to compare to her voice performance as Dorothy for the animated film *Journey Back to Oz,* not released until 1972 (but I believe Liza's contribution was recorded much earlier, before her mom's death, and with her blessing).

For years Liza would refuse to sing this song, explaining "It's been sung." Okay, it's "her" song, but Liza manages to make it her own.

I wonder how hard it was for her to perform the exact song her mother is known for and made (it) famous. 😥
