THanks for that, I assumed so (and imagine being on TV - Letterman no less, scary..) I purchased this on cassette at the time (in my 30s by then and with no realiable guides for '90s ROCK - hit and miss for awhile there). I only play it when I think of it or see it. She's great. She's smart, she's honest, and she ROCKS - and I see she's still around and quite active! ~

It was tailored to be a radio friendly single by the record label.

This is a good contrast to the studio/radio version. Studio was very well polished and this has a much more raw feel since it's live.

and yet youre here listening to liz phair. this is why we love her.

I discovered this 90's tune earlier this year while I was trying to relocate another 90's song "You’re Still The One" on the Internet, and I'm very glad that I did! :D

It's hard to have control, despite the rehearsals... When I watched this video I remembered that a little... i don't think it was a bad performance. i love the noise addict tshirt the guitar player was wearing. i used to love that band. and she sang on ben lee's debut. i loved that song. 1995 was a good year.

Hey THAT's my guitar!! :-) I proudly own my Dad's '65 Fender Musicmaster II !!! :) I LOVE that old guitar... and mine is just like that.. red, with the mo-of-pearl pick guard!! And hey, that's a strat neck there!! :-)

At the time of this recording, Liz had notorious bouts of stage fright. You can see it here... she doesn't come on stage till she is announced, and you can see her trying to look anywhere but the audience. But, I'm sure you could do better on television in front of a studio audience as well... right?

I love when she smiles as she's about to (not) say fuck on TV.

Voice is shaking as much as any human has ever done, no big deal. It's a very hard key for anyone, rarely do you have vocal notes that low. Its nervousness but also sometimes our voices just dont work as well as we hope on any given moment. It's the part difficulty plus the nervousness and possibly just an unfortunate voice moment most singers face, not all, but most.

Actually a Musicmaster II.

Easily, EASILY one of the best albums of the 1990s. Like top 10. It has material *lyrics that is current by today's standards.

Exactly. There are many great singers who don't have pretty voices. BTW, Aguilera did a great collaboration with jazz pianist Herbie Hancock that surprised me.

She's always had a lot of stage fright; back when this album was first out she was probably completely terrified to be on Letterman. Wonder if that's what the look on her face is.

Ever heard of Lacuna Coil????? Their female singer is AMAZING. I recommend "Within Me". Their single "Our Truth" is on the Underworld: Evolution soundtrack. They kick ass.

@robram818 Liz Phair didn't come into her own as a studio singer until Whitechocolatespaceegg...four years after Whip-Smart. On record, it's like two utterly different singers. Could also be the choice of producers -- Whip-Smart producer Brad Wood (Veruca Salt) is known for his raw, seemingly artless sound, while Whiteschocolatespaceegg producer Scott Litt (R.E.M.) is very polished and smooth.
