Living Without A Car for A FULL YEAR!

Living without a car in North America is not a typical thing. Our entire continent has been developed around the automobile, and as soon as you try to live without one that becomes very obvious. In this video Leah and I break down how we have lived without a car for over a year!

When I was 21 years old I got epilepsy and I wasn't allowed to keep my drivers license. It's been 29 years and I have 2 children. 8 years ago I became handicapped and I got a power wheelchair. I live alone with my children in Sweden and it actually works really well, we live on an island about 10 miles outside of the main city. There is a certain kind of taxi service for wheelchair users that doesn't cost more than the bus, so transportation is cheap.

I think a worthy thing to talk about in this conversation is the added personal safety of a car. As a Canadian women I've been harassed multiple times while walking to/taking the bus, and it's the single biggest reason I still will drive or be driven as opposed to public transit.

Omg... Melanie is so right -- especially if you live in a large city. It seems the bigger the population, the more harrassment you receive. I grew up in a small town where you might get hooted at occasionally from some dude driving past... and very occasionally someone might pass you on the street and mutter something inappropriate (that they're never willing to repeat when you loudly call them out on it and embarrass them in front of the other pedestrians). But when I moved to Toronto? Oh, man. The increase in such incidents was exponential and super annoying... the content/context was more explicit and gross, often downright unsettling, more threatening and definitely more terrifying... Location and time of day seemed not to matter. If you left your home, you were seen as "fair game." That said, my father (who was a police officer) broke a case decades ago where women were being brutally attacked at their cars, but none of the women could ever say for sure HOW it had happened. As his investigation progressed, he eventually figured out that the attacker was hiding UNDER their cars, waiting by the driver's door... As soon as the criminal heard a key start to scrape the lock, he'd grab his intended victims by the ankles and yank so hard that the women's heads would hit the ground, stunning them or knocking them out completely. I only share this because he FREQUENTLY warned/reminded me about NOT cultivating a false sense of security because I was driving/travelling by car. In fact, I still own the million-and-three mini flashlights he's gifted me over the years. Please, please, please, anyone who is approaching their vehicle at night: from a good/safe distance, shine a flashlight UNDER the vehicle first, determine it's clear, and then slowly approach again, shining a light into the cabin and back seats/compartments/flatbed/hatch before getting inside. Then, lock all doors immediately. (That's another way they can get you, as people generally check their phones etc. and are sitting idle plus distracted with their vehicle doors/windows not secured.) Parking in well-lit and busy areas is good too. So is carrying your keys between your knuckles in case you need to strike for a quick getaway... Be safe out there! 💚

Im finally getting a car after about a year without one, I grew up without a car as my mother could not afford one raising 3 kids by herself, so public transport isnt new to me so its not too crazy. What I find funny is how UNIMAGINABLE, it is to my coworkers to have to walk/bike/catch a bus or train to get around, like every time i come in to work its "DID YOU BIKE TODAY" "DID YOU CATCH THE BUS??" "ITS RAINING/SNOWING, ARE YOU OK??" I appreciate the concern but cars weren't always a thing lol, I will live

I think the argument should be made more often is that by using bikes, E-Bikes, scooters, busses, etc, can allow for people to live with ONE car rather than 2 or 3. Have the main car for all the really important stuff, and then use alternative modes of transport around the requirements of the main vehicle. Something else that comes to mind in favour of owning a car is emergencies. Sometimes you just need to hop in and go to get somewhere fast.

The american south is super hard to get around without a car(i drive 3 times a week, then bicycle or walk when things are under 10 miles away) it's crazy how public transportation "exists" but does so in wack places, so it's not accessible to really anyone. I was on a trip last year to the west coast, and it was a great getting to ride real public transportation in both seattle, wa and vancouver, bc. I thought the transportation on the west coast was phenomenal , i really hope that we can adopt good transportation in the american south sometime soon

I have been waiting for this video! My fiancé and I gave up our car in August and we are living in Albany, New York. This is a very small city that is pretty car centric, but we’re making it work! We have learned so much and really enjoy not having unexpected repair costs. We are pretty anxious drivers and have each been in a few car accidents. Taking the train or bus feels safer to us and more relaxing. More times than not I am happy I don’t have a car.

Sounds like it may be best you two not drive then. Not everyone is in the same situation. I've been driving legally (grew up on a farm so was driving as a kid) since 1985 with no accidents or tickets. Driving can be so relaxing at times too. But other times you just have to go with the flow and not get too stressed.

Gave up my car 3.5 years ago. I didn't use the car much before I gave it up so was already accustomed to getting around Ottawa by foot, bike, bus and car share (mostly for for groceries). Definitely fitter for doing it that way. Biggest challenge for those who are not used to getting around is planning. There are always going to be unavoidable delays and it will take a little while to know exactly how many errands you can fit in a few hours. Always have an ebook and audiobook on my phone for delays public transit delays.

This is the kind of content I have been wanting to see on KZread. I appreciate someone sharing the struggle and educating other people about it. I feel like your channel does a good job of communicating the actions we can take with the low key guilt we feel for living and taking resources away from the earth. I think people are becoming more aware and becoming more anxious. Instead of feeding this anxiety they can take actions and alleviate some of this anxiety because we are honestly not so helpless since there are still actions we can take. Thank you for communicating that. In summary this content makes me feel less anxious because I see that other people are also caring and thinking about the same things I do/worry about.

I ditched the car 2 years ago, I calculated my parking fees were going through the roof to the tune of 7100 Euro in the last year of owner ship. Since that day, I had a trial run of 2 months in autumn, I relied on public transport and bike only and it saved me around 14.000... That was a pretty nice vacation. One caveat though, our cycling infrastructure is probably the best in the world.

north America views were eye-opening! Towns are the easiest place to cycle; the countryside is fine, depending. My big problem was nobody would give me a job. It always went the same: "We did hire someone who got the bus, but the bus kept not running and his parents weren't always around to give him a lift." I would argue "I get the bus all the time and it's only not come once in two years! I'm an adult, not a teenager - trust me!" But no hope. Seriously, the prejudice kept me jobless for four years. I would explain the routes, show the timetables, they'd invent excuses.

I've lived in Hamburg, Germany for most of my life, and didn't even have a driver's license up until the age of 35, because public transport + bikes + friends was enough to get around. Now I moved to a smaller, rural area and sadly I had to get a driver's license, because of how car centric everything gets the more you move outside of big cities. But I still don't own a car, I'll just drive my wife's car when I need one. Car sharing sadly isn't an option in such a small town (there are exactly 0 providers in our area), so we basically maintain a car that we use 1 day a week to do grocery shopping (probably could even cut out that one weekly use if we'd go shopping throughout the week, buy smaller amounts, and transport it on our bicycles) and the occasional trips to friends and relatives. I would love to get rid of the car and just use car sharing alternatives. It would save a lot of money. About public transport "being smelly": I only ever hear this argument from people who used public transport maybe once or twice in their lifetime. As said above, I used PT for most of my adult life, and I can count the number of occasions where there was a terribly smelly person (or bodily fluid) inside the bus or train on one hand.

you didn't mention the best part for most people: you will lose one or two dress sizes. Yep. Normal people reading this: i put on two dress sizes when i learnt to drive in later adult life, and i lost one when i got a two month bus pass. Big dieter's trick. Buy the bus pass up front, or you'll shirk every time it rains, use the car and keep the fat.

I got around mostly by bike in Langley for a little over a year when I was taking time off from school and trying to save money, and what I found interesting was that actually riding around the suburb wasn't that bad...it was that once I got to the place I was going, there was LITERALLY nowhere to lock up my bike. Nothing at all. And then I'd walk into a store with my bike helmet and get totally profiled and have staff following me around. Apparently riding a bike makes me a criminal in a Vancouver suburb. Honestly thought I also rode around on sidewalks a lot which is technically not allowed because Langley's roads are just terrifying (semi-trucks, massive jacked up pick up trucks, everyone drives enormous SUVs and is yelling at their children while driving distracted...you get the picture). But even considering all that it WAS possible. Just not very convenient.

I've been looking forward to this video! I'm glad the experiment went well for you. Pretty much all the pros and cons you mentioned are factors in my decision to not have a car as well, except I live in a multi-family home with my family, so having to visit them isn't an issue. I think it would be interesting to research intergenerational living from a sustainability perspective. Someone else in the comments mentioned driving anxiety and accidents, which has also contributed to my decision. Of course there is the occasional bus or train tragedy in the news but those are very rare compared to the amount of car accidents and malfunctions that happen every day.

It's the age old trade off between freedom and comfort. If you own a car it is more comfortable but you have to trade some of your freedom in exchange for the money to pay for it. If walk, take public transit, or bike, you have less comfort on rainy and snowy days but more time to devote to other things than paying for a car.

I love this video! I moved to Berlin (from Vancouver Island) 15 years ago and haven't owned a car since...but here's the kicker - I got rid of my car months before I moved and lived car-free in Campbell River for those months. I'm constantly trying to convince friends and family back on the Island that they can either live car-free or at least save a lot of gas money by only driving occasionally (especially if they cut back to just one family car). Most people I know in Victoria are already sold on the idea, but people in Campbell River aren't, which is interesting because Campbell River is smaller and therefore actually even easier to get around by bike. The distance from my parents in their 'suburban' neighbourhood to downtown is the same distance from our apartment to my husband's work in Berlin. I've tried telling people how easy it was to bike those months before I moved here. I've also tried outlining how I go car-free when I visit (a visit almost always involves borrowing a bike, taking that private bus up and down island and sharing rides with friends to go hiking and get places that are too far to bike and public transit won't take us like Strathcona). People just don't want to hear it. I think the Island could do a bit better to make it easier to go car free...that bus I mentioned is crazy expensive for what it is, but it's also small and privately run and operated. Something publicly run by BC Transit linking communities on the Island would be so much better. A lot of communities outside of Victoria are more bikeable than people think, but they could stand to do a bit better by creating infrastructure that makes beginner cyclists feel safer. Public transport on the Island (especially outside of Victoria) is pretty sad compared to a lot of the world. Still, it can only get there if people support it, and the focus on cars and their infrastructure definitely hinders that. Anyway, thanks for making this. I'll post it every time I get into an argument with someone about going car-free (since their argument is always 'well, that's fine in Berlin.')

I live in Germany and I have 3 Kids and we don't own a car, we do everything with the bycicle or walking and I enjoy it almost all the time, except when it's raining (in Hamburg is quite often) but it does minimize the social life though, because you are not able to just take the car and go somewhere or visit someone, anyway, thanks for the video and for helping to make this world better

However, I finish working very late 2 - 3 times a week - the kind of late that translates into Evo or taxi home... We also live on Vancouver Island, we're up north in Campbell River! We own a car because its a little trickier to get around here without one, but we try to limit our usage. Luckily we live within walking distance to my husband's work, but on the other-hand we live 30 minutes from mine. We try to ride our bikes into town when we can, and when we can't we park in a central location and walk to where we need to in town so we aren't driving around parking in various places. Definitely a lot easier when you're living in the city, but there's lots of little things you can do to limit your costs and carbon footprint if you're living more rurally!

I would love a follow up video on living without a car!! I’m only 17 and I’m just getting my licence now, but I’m thinking of not actually buying a car. First of all because here in the Uk insurance is crazy expensive for a first time driver whose parents don’t drive (which is my case), and also because living in London there is a lot of public transport. So while knowing how do drive is a good skill that I would like to have, I don’t think a car is necessary to me at the moment.

When I move to a more modern city, I will definitely go for the car-free lifestyle. I would go for an E-Bike myself, with a membership with a shared car service for occasional drives. Being a car enthusiast as well, I think it's much cooler to be able to drive so many different cars. Once you buy your own car, you're stuck with it for a while, plus it can't serve all purposes, no matter what the marketing department says. :-)

oh man, i wish i could do stuff like this. i live in brazil, and believe it or not, brazil always seems to copy only the worst things from the us and canada. i live in the northwest region, in the heart of the amazon rainforest in a city called Manaus (over 2,000,000 inhabitants), and it’s hell here. you basically have to own a car if you want ANY comfort. sidewalks are rare, even in the richest neighbourhoods, and when there are any they are often cracked, full of potholes and/or not levelled. like, some people build their sidewalk to be 30cm higher than the street, sometimes even higher. it’s gross and impossible to walk on, so it’s easier to just walk in the street. and that’s another problem: traffic here is absolute chaos. there are main streets that have the sidewalk problem and the traffic is crazy, so you have to choose between being run over by a car/motorcycle/bus/truck or deal with the awful sidewalks. and you probably guessed it already, but there is no bicycle infrastructure whatsoever. nothing, so people cycling to anywhere are in grave danger all the time. it’s infuriating. public transportation is also garbage. absolute garbage, and EVERYONE who uses it agrees with me. so if one doesn’t own a car, one cannot walk, cycle or take a bus with any comfort. so the car is probably the only option if one wants to stay sane, but even having a car doesn’t automatically make it better because as i’ve said before, traffic is chaotic. so drivers are always stressed. this city is the absolute epitome of awful.

Ok it was embarrassing when my parents had to pick me up from work because the buses to my street stopped at 6pm. But I have never had a single driving lesson and at my age never felt the need. But OMG the states. Just had to extend my vacation by 2 days because the buses from Williamstown MA to Boston dont run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I wish I could do this but I live in a suburb of Detroit and you literally can’t get anywhere with the bus and there’s barely ever bike lanes. Plus everything in Detroit is spread out super far away. Like the job I’m interviewing for right now is a 30 minute drive away, has no bus route, and it would take 1 hr 40 min to bike. The problem is I just graduated and I’m a teacher. So my yearly salary is the same price as a new car. It’s just so annoying and idk what I’m going to do.

You said how to get around without a car in Canada... But you're in BC. Your winters are insanely mild/nonexistent. I live in Québec. And as much as it is possible to take the metro and bus when you have access, and people certainly do, but the simplicity, speed and ease of a car in the winter is pretty high. In the summer, I bike everywhere (except to work). If our weather was milder all year round I'd be biking way more but our weather makes it harder.

I live in the heart of a downtown urban metro, but we have the largest city blocks in the US. I wish I were joking. The city has experimented with a few different kinds of bike lanes over the years, and none of them have stuck. Instead, we have a hot mess of sometimes safe bike commuting, sometimes iffy, and streets that have no bike lanes at all. Our public transit is also not great. I work about 15 miles from my apartment. If I take public transit, it takes me about an hour and 20 minutes to get to or from work. Cities need to figure out more sustainable ways to get around.

None of my family members own a car so I have to ask my friends - friends basically strangers for a car just to go 20 km (+/- 12.5 miles) to the city to get the groceries every single month. Sometimes they are not willing to do so. But the reason why none of my family members have a car, not when my grandparents, is because we are poor. Well my grandmother and grandfather now are not, but they live in a city, where everything is accessible. Not like myself, now that I am at home 20 km away from a city. I come from a little village with +/- 6-7 houses and the bigger village is 3 km away. The closest city 20 km away, the bigger city (our country's 2nd biggest city) 39.5-40 km (+/- 24.5 miles) away from where I live. My routine basically consists of going to zoom lectures, eating, relaxing (watching some youtube videos), exercising outside for +/- 1 hour, petting my dog and going to sleep. Every day it has been like this for +/-2 years now. I have not seen another person, even my neighbours we live like 250 - 300 m apart, for a year now. The only people living with me are my grandparents. My sister and mom live in the city. I have not seen my mom and my stepsister since New Years this year.

It's going to be 2 year I'm living without a car. It came as a good desicion as I live in centre of Munich Germany where public transport is good & u can bike everywhere Having a car in the centre can be troublesome . But it all depends on where you are living in some part of the world. I come from Melaka Malaysia, and there we must have a car as the public transport connection is super poor. Anyone planning to be carless, go for it, give it a try and do not bother yourself to explain people that don't understand why you go carless.
