Living with the 2017 Volvo S90 • EP 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A new feature on the show - MotoMan looks at what it is like to live with a car beyond first impressions. In this case, the 2017 Volvo S90 turbo and supercharged sedan. He takes the Volvo S90 to a number of places one would normally take a car like this: The grocery store, in traffic and even to a fancy neighborhood around Los Angeles to take a second look at a new Volvo that goes beyond an initial car review . . .

"People don't know what to think of it" I saw a brand new V90 Cross Country when on business in Chicago. Stopped at Alexander's Cafe in Elgin for breakfast. This older guy (of course) drives up in one. I ask him quickly, "Hey, those V90s look great. You like it?" He loved it. And then three or four other people walked up and asked, "Whats a V90? It looks great!"

I own a 96 855 GLT and a 98 S70 T5. I absolutely LOVE the power that the turbo'd 5 cylinder inline produces. My friend has a 2015 XC90 T6 and that turbo'd inline 6 is a BEAST. As a premium option, I'd really like to see Volvo offer a supercharged, turbocharged inline 6. I think that would produce plenty of power, sound great, and, knowing the ingenuity of Volvo, it would probably outdo it's competitors in a breeze..

thank you, your reviews are becoming the best auto reviews on youtube in last few months, imo. (the bmw 530i review (comparision with 540, e class etc).was stunning). Those books and the big picture view of the car industry youre brining in is superb! Regarding the premium question in this video- i think it means "added value which costs more", so every feature must be "better" from the base car (a transport vehicle) somehow- the noise isolation should be better, the seats must be more adjustable, usability first , etc.

Great Video Blog! I just purchased a 2018 Volvo S90 Inscription and I'm getting it Polestar tuned. The T8 version of this car only seems to be the strongest with a full charge. It sounds like Volvo's direction is to offer all vehicles with electric engines by 2020. Depending on your location, I'd be happy to let you review my car when it gets delivered in a few weeks.

I have a 2015 S60 T6 FWD that I just got , 35k, black on black. really the nicest car I've ever had, but I'm thinking in a couple of years I'll get one of these, 2 years old with the CPO warranty. because they're just that good. If they offer a Polestar upgrade, I'd go for that, obviously. And thanks for the music tip!

Serial Volvo owner---and yes 2 of them have saved me from serious injury when they were totaled by other cars. I understand the eco/Swedish side of Volvo and the biz/Chinese owned side....they should offer a v6 supercharged similar to a jaguar. They should offer a polestar for all models...only way to compete with the big boys. EV tech is still immature for most drivers and Volvo lacks a charging station network, which I think is essential to broad market acceptance. Polestar is performance...EV should just be another portfolio option. Great review....thank you

I like what they used to do, which was I5's, I6's, and V8's. I drive a turbo I5 manual Volvo wagon, and I love it. I think they should offer I5 and I6 turbos as the Polestar models, not just hopped up four cylinders.

You just have to enable the individual driving mode and you can tailor it using any setting from either of the three presets and combine then into one driver mode. Its in the My Car settings. Then once its enabled and you pick your settings, it displays in the drive mode selector page just like youd normally select one of the three preset settings.

I drive a 2001 BMW 750iL and i get between 17 and 19mpg around town, thats a 12 cylinder getting better economy than a turbo 4. That is just crazy and makes me wonder why we as consumers gave up the 8's and inline 6's for crappy turbo 4's. I have to admit though, I do love the Volvo S90. The interior is beautiful, the engine really is pretty good and the exterior is a mondern car that finally looks good and different from all the cookie cutter aerodynamic blah designs out there. I really wish Volvo would bring back their inline 5 or 6, then I would have no choice but to buy an S90.

2013 XC60 T6 (3.0 liter I6) RDesign with Polestar Optimisation - It is a reliable robust car for a lot of rural driving with good Safety tech and it is comfortable and easy on long trips. I really like the new SPA based cars and I understand the design value of going to just I4 engines and the T8 for me would be a really nice replacement and the T6 I4 would be worth considering. I think "premium" is marketing - but they are a very pleasant safe and comfortable vehicle and I think that if you are not after a harder edge drivers car then they represent a great compromise Sadly in Aus you can only get T8 in RDesign and T6 in R or Inscription and now very pricey - so maybe just keep what I have till the pricing model here gets a bit more rationale

I own a C70-2 with non turbo 5 cyl. I wouldn't say it's luxury premium, but it's not mid market either... Anyway I had an opportunity to drive a T8 XC90, and while I love the idea of PHEV, it did NOWHERE near as good as the numbers suggested. Plainly, a better engine is needed. A V6 probably would fit better than a 5 cylinder.

I think Volvo's best bet is I the T8 twin engine system. I wouldn't own a pure electric car yet because I live in a large dense city, and it's difficult to get reliable access to chargers. I like the idea of being able to plug in as much as possible, but not have a problem when you can't get access to a charger. The problem with the T8 is the price. it is at a significant premium over the other engine options, which is understandable because it's much more complicated. However, the BMW 530e iPerformance is almost the same price as the entry level turbo four. Maybe Volvo can keep their turbo four cylinder strategy, but offer several twin engine choices with different batter packs and levels of electric performance. To me that would look like a small upgrade over the T5 performance, but greater efficiency. Then perhaps they could tune the T8 to offer a sub 4 0-60 o compete with the M550i, E43 or Tessa Model S.

They should do electrified Polestar vehicles equivalent to AMG and skip the hybrid stuff. But realistically, it will end up being a hybrid just because the electric charging infrastructure isn't wide-spread enough, especially in Canada. IHMO, they also need to get the coupe / convertible version of this car into production to reinvigorate the brand further. I currently have an 2016 XC90 Inscription T6. Definitely premium due to quality of interior, fit and finish and awesome B&W sound system ... this is a road-trip machine! And dynamic mode is very, very good. We are spoiled by tech advancement these days and expectations are very high because even as recent as 7 years ago, the quality and performance of my XC90 would have been considered an absolute wonder.

MM, nice drive in this new Volvo. As for another premium gas or electric, electrics are cool. Just five hours ago, I drove the Honda Clarity Electric. I'd already driven the Clarity Hydrogen and am signed up for the Clarity Hybrid (not out yet). I do like electrics and see them as the future to save this horrid environment vs. fossil fuel. The biggest problem with today's electric is, of course, the range. The only electrics I could reasonably drive to Northern CA from The OC are the Teslas and the Bolts. I can't afford the Teslas and the Bolt is possibly too small for a trip up north with all of our baggage, etc. The latter is yet to be seen, of course. For contemporary life, the best compromise for long distance travel is a hybrid vehicle. I had a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid which filled that bill. Of course, you're thinking I was just questioning the size of the Bolt and lived with a Civic Hybrid.... hmmm... Well, the Civic was not a great size but doable. As an aside, glad to see you ventured out to Angel Stadium with the Volvo. It is only five miles directly south of your humble abode. Sorry we missed you. We were there a couple of weeks ago. Have a cool weekend!

I drive a 2006 Volvo s60, I love the car. This one is very nice, I like the blue color, and pretty much everything about it. I totally agree, Volvo new interiors are among the most attractive in the entire car industry. I do agree that having some engine option of a V6 turbo, or something would be great, but it's not important to me. I'm not caring much for performance and power in an automobile. I like confidence, capability, features, design, etc. Which is why I love Volvo! And yes I don't like everyone calling everything a sport sedan or whatnot. Volvo's are not sport cars.. even with their top engine options, they are just capability, and not sports driving. There's a real difference to those ideas. I want comfort, design, features, durability, reliability, value. Volvo does this perfectly in my opinion, and they do it the best in the industry from what I can tell. Also I'm not sure exactly what you were looking for in a question of premium.. but I do consider Volvo premium (low-end luxury). For me , it's a segment many do not appreciate. I'm skeptical about the T8 variants.. but I got to admit, I would be able to drive to work and bak each day on pure electricity, which would be cool I guess (not like it costs a lot in gas, anyway though)

I drive a v60 R-design with the T6 turbo and "polestar tuning". I would have bought the full polestar if they had a model with adjustable stocks similar to Audi and others with on the fly adjustment. In Canada we have some terrific roads in the summer and some real crappy winters where things get very rough. I love having the space of the wagon with the dynamics of a sport sedan. However I'm thinking my next vehicle will have to be something other than Volvo because I want MORE low end grunt, quicker 0-60 performance. The supercharged/turbo charged 4 cylinders are overly complex systems with crappy mileage and still no better off the line. Volvo needs something to truely compete with AMG / M / RS models. At the moment my only options on the horizon in coming years are European spec Audi RS60's and AMG E series. I was really hoping the new V60 would have a Polestar model to really compete. It seems rather unlikely now that Polestar is a "separate" entity again doing electric. My hopes of an AWD 0-60mph in about 4 seconds volvo are gone....oh well.

I didn't know you could buy a new 2017 AMG E43 for about 60k with all the standard options that's offered with the T6 Inscription (or Momentum, which is even cheaper, albeit less equipment). I'll pay you $5k to negotiate that deal for me so you can still save me nearly $10k, or possibly even more. The 540i Xdrive makes sense, but it doesn't come with nearly as many features as the S90 similarly equipped, either. If you try to tick all the options required to match the equipment you're easily in 70k for the 540i xDrive. I mean, WHY even make that comparison?? I've driven all of those cars for a potential purchase and there's no way you're getting an E43 or 540i xDrive for the price of a T6 Inscription with the same features, unless they're branded titles. What you should be comparing to as far as price/feature availability would be E300 4Matic and 530i xDrive with all the option boxes ticked. I've driven the 300 and it's good, but VERY soft. You also left out the A6 which is probably a much better comparison but still at a premium. Way more reasonable and logical than a freaking E43 comparison. However, I do believe they probably need to rethink their drivetrains. A twin-charged I-4 has been done in the tuner world for over a decade now, but I just hope the actuators are robust enough for that transition from one forced induction platform to the other over extended use of a daily driver rather than a custom tuned car designed specifically for sport use. If you think about the model, it obviously makes sense from a cost consolidation perspective, and it'll be interesting to see how they involve more hybrid technology into their engines in the future given their unique approach to performance output vs efficiency. I would say it just kind of sucks right now to be part of the beginning stages of their long-term outlook for powertrain development. Could it be better? Of course! Is it more than sufficient if you know how to use what you have? Of course! However, it's not ONLY about maximum output, it's about the overall power band, and I didn't feel any 'lacking' power at or below 85mph. I didn't go higher than that because, why would you in that car? The powerband is eager nearly anywhere you press the pedal, which you certainly can't say with the E43, but definitely can with the E53 (which I've also driven...and is highly addictive). I honestly wish Volvo went with an execution like or similar to the 53 models, an electric motor (maybe not a mercedes like generator) for the low-end and then probably a little bit larger turbo for the mid to top end. This would also increase PHEV-capability and maybe off-set weight required with the supercharger and all the extra plumbing. Baby steps, I suppose...

The S90 is not premium enough, it has the looks but not the options and the engines of a premium car. Way to little options for interior trim and leather colors. And about the engine...4 cylinders are ok for motorcycles, not for cars. I really dislike 4 cylinder engines. The S90 needs a 3.0 liter 5 cylinder and no less then that, also non ev possible. They want to compete with BMW and Mercedes, but they are for sure not there yet. I drive a BMW E60 525xi with full options, like comfort seats, that feels premium to me. I love the look of the S90 but i want a new 5 serie G30 in the future with the proper 6 cylinder engine.

Volvo is not alone. My BMW 5:er does annoying stuff as well. If I open the door to check on curbs while maneuvering the car slams the gearbox into parking while rolling gently sending a severe jolt into the gearbox. It's not particularly consistent either. Some times it will allow me. Some times it won't. It's annoying as h*ll.

The same day it would not allow me to park without the seatbelt, I will put it on sale.

I cannot understand, why Volvo uses this big screen. Looks nice, but i can see how long you didn´t look on the street while tapping on the screen. Dangerous! How good is the voice commander/linguatronic?

Reliability? In Africa here we have crappy roads & limited dealerships, which means they stick it to us on price, from the posterior right into the mouth (pardon the graphic illustration, but it’s apt). I’m in a 2004 Volvo S80 2.0T & am unhappy with the dealer & mechanics to the point of being put off, love the car but it’s a money-pit, thanks to them😭

Why are you surprised that the auto maker of a Nanny State country, sold to a statist/communist country, would have a Nanny state mentality towards your seatbelt?
