Living with Spina Bifida: Shakti Krishnan

Shakti Krishnan sleeps in, his mum does his washing and he's slowly learning to cook. He jokes about it now, but how will this eighteen year old survive in the big wide world? Especially with the challenges that come with spina bifida.

nyoka johnson I’m a paraplegic and in my early 50s. I went to college, grad school, have a great professional career, am married, have twins, own my home, drive myself everywhere, ride my adapted mountain bike, care for my daughter’s horse, and have been to every continent except Antarctica and Australia. Having a physical disability by no means implies you cannot have a full and happy life.

You probably won't see this, but hello! Im carson I'm 19 and I have Spina Bifida. There will be hardships, there will be difficulties, but we truly learn to overcome and live with everyday struggles. A happy life with spina bifida is possible, and likely. As long as you're there, talk to them and as they get older, understand what they go through, especially through puberty and social life.

Man, I really appreciate this episode. You think it is hard going through high school with such a serious disability, imagine how college will be?! It is really hard and almost everyone is indifferent to the struggles that a disabled individual goes through. It is something else... I'm glad he says it aloud, speaks his mind, and is honest. He plays the guitar beautifully too btw!!

Whenever I see disabled people, I look at them as a bit different, but only for a short time. Then it's all regular life, I don't focus on their disability because it is no big deal. Wish more people actually did this, I find many who discriminate such people.

What a wonderful son. To hear a teen talk so positive about their parent is the best reward, next to the love that your child gives you, respect. Some of us don’t have that capability or opportunity to be an amazing parent, all you can do is try and hope it works out right. Job well done, on both sides.

My sister was diagnosed with another form of spinal bifida, as an adult she was numb on one side of her body with other symptoms, so eventually she diagnosed with Arnold-Chiari Malformation Type II is also known as "classic" Chiari malformation or Arnold-Chiari malformation which is a form of spinal bifida but its only diagnose in adulthood & most people don't even know they have it b/c most don't have symptoms, only people with symptoms have the problems, my sister has had an operation to remove fluid from her brain but 30 yrs before when my sister was a toddler learning to walk she did have to use special leg braces for a few weeks b/c she was pigeon-toed, which was a sign.

I just love these inspiring stories that this channel has. My son was born with a form of this disorder but his spine didn't leak fluid. He did have to have corrective surgery when he was a young teenager. If he didn't have it he was facing paralysis and other bad things as well. Today he is thriving well.

What do adults do? We wish we were kids again so we could restart our lives with all the hindsight that living has given us Haha At least I do. I wish I could go back and start over. There are no do overs in life though. So make your choices wisely and live to the fullest!

I get that mom is trying to toughen him up...but being 17-18 there is a certain number of hours of sleep that age group requires. PLUS he is constantly recovering from surgeries...his body has got to be totally taxed out. Often if you don't recoup it can cause immunity issues and that age group has got to be the worst about cleanliness! I guess I don't get the culture OR I don't get mom's culture. I hope he continues to excel in any of his future endevers. He's a handsome guy and seems to have a great outlook on his future!

My granddaughter, my oldest one, was born with Spina bifeda, dislocated hips and club feet. She's in her thirties. She's married and has a You Tube channel. She doesn't want me in her life. Her mother and my son divorced. I think she's doing really well. she's married to a man who was in a motorcycle accident; he can't walk, and as far as I know they're happy.
