Living Through Revolutionary Times

As an atheist, I still like the idea of churches as places of community, contemplation, reverence, affirmation of shared values, etc. Why can't we have a secular version of that without all the sectarian dogma and supernatural bullshit?

We do. They are called rock concerts. Well, not so much on the contemplation unless you're at a Jackson Browne or James Taylor concert, but everything else that you listed is there.

I live very well under the poverty line, with my wife and two kids. But i see many people collapsing under the freedom, anomie and purposelessness of our society, when money and followers are the only remaining gods, and unlike the trancendental gods, they do not love everyone equally...

F Z is right & most immigrants hav the same feeling about America , who make it, 'who are successful' but then there r others who'r , lets say 'let down' America is hard , its not for all including the ones who hav lived here for generations & feel let down , its very hard for them to fathom history , statistics , they look around & blame the system , there is a reason why every great nation goes down , lets hope the history does not repeat itself, for many more centuries to come .

The problem is the “average” citizen of each nation losses out while the exceptional citizen thrives under the globalized system. The “Everyman” backlash has long been building. The response to those needs will rule the next generation.

Ah, after WWII the Dutch, the French, and the English continued their colonial ways attempting to reconquer, establish colonies in Indochina, Vietnam, Algeria, and Egypt. Locals, (and the US) put an end to their nonsense. Artfully through the Suez Crisis (threat to call Britain's war debt), and the US's own debacle in Vietnam. The post-WWII Europeans remain too insular, anti-immigrant, and close-minded (especially the Brits).

Coal, oil and gas led to the modern economic miracle. One barrel of oil is equal to 4+ years of manual labor, plus 4000 useful byproducts. The enlightenment and democracies set the stage for innovation. Energy powered it. Money is a claim on future energy resources.

I wasn't religious until I became a Mormon at 19. Religious thoughts, primarily Christianity & New Age Theory FKD me up GOOD.
