I came to the coast with some fishing buddies in 1970, got lost and have been here ever since. The one perk you omitted that directly benefits Senior Homeowners is that our property taxes are reduced to 50% of the published rate the first full year after your 65th birthday (you must notify the Tax Dept. as it is not automatic). That means that while the $300,000 home owned by a "Gen Z" couple would be paying about $2,565.00, the Senior Citizen couple would only be paying about $1,284.00 a year in property taxes. I also remember that when I moved down here in 1970, Wilmington was so quiet, they rolled the streets up at night during the Fall & Winter months. As far as the traffic goes, I travelled back and forth to New York City 2 to 3 times a month on business. Wilmington traffic is nothing compared to "The City". The traffic problem in Wilmington is that people simply don't know how to drive.

I absolutely agree with you about the traffic! I was there last weekend and it just stressed me out. Great video.

Wilmington native who now lives in San Antonio. Summers are very tolerable in Wilmington compared to Houston or San Antonio. 100+ temperatures are the norm here, and Houston is extremely humid, San Antonio less so because it’s in a transition zone to a drier southwest climate. When I was growing up Wilmington was not like it is now: downtown was rundown and dangerous at night, there was not a great music and restaurant scene, for example. It’s come a long way and it has a lot going for it now, which is why everyone wants to live there. Oh, and the traffic has always been bad and has only gotten worse.

Hey Gregory - thanks for the comment! Humid is the issue here, but does not keep people from relocating here!! Downtown Wilmington has changed so much and is definitely a destination spot for visitors and locals. Awesome food and bar scene and growing like crazy. You should come back and visit!

@@PortCityLivingNC no worries. It's still a great city, but I should clarify my disdain is more about comparing then vs. now. Yes, nothing stays the same but this town feels completely different. I help care for my elderly parents and we're also here until my stepdaughter turns 18. After that, Florida or Tennessee.

William, enjoyed the video as my wife and I are coordinating our home sale/relocation. Have seen many of these types of videos, but I'm curious to know why I've yet to view one that addresses the astronomical parking fees at Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure beaches. Having lived within 15 minutes of the beach for more than 40 years across several eastern states, I've never seen parking rates so expensive. I know it's a hot-button topic in New Hanover County, as there've been numerous newspaper articles/television segments highlighting this. At $5/hour, $25/day and one Wrightsville Beach parking lot that charged $40/day in 2021 (all without the ability to purchase parking passes unless you're able to afford living in those towns - which most can't) I've read where several Wilmingtonians state they can no longer afford to go to the beach. For those of us who go a few times per week, these prices are cost-prohibitive and are a major reason my wife and I opened our search to other locations. Just wanted to know your thoughts.

Hey Chris - sorry for the delay. I agree with you about the crazy prices to park at WB. Being a Wilmington native, I've always gravitated to WB and love it so much and have seen the steady increase in parking prices over the years. Me and my friends have this discussion a lot and our theory is that WB residents would love to make WB a private island - it will never happen. Also, if it did become private they could lose their federal funding for beach nourishment. So maybe thats why the prices increased so much... Fortunately for me, I have a best friend with a boat , so I no longer sit out at Oxford Street anymore. Some beaches up north charge you to go out on the beach as well....at least we don't have that.....YET! But for those who don't' have the luxury of having access to a boat to island hop, they are having to resort to using Uber to get them to the beach....not a bad idea!!

Hello Dylan - I am not quite sure how to address that as everyone is at various financial points in their life. I think there are ways to spend time in Wilmington on a budget. Maybe I will take your advice and deep dive into that topic. Will keep you posted!

Palmetto bugs are more prevalent than roaches. BIGGER TOO! I just left Wilmington in 2019! I still have a house we rent out there. Rats! Bertha brought us black rats! North Chase, back of Kings Grant always flood, along with New Center drive with even a rain storm. Want to talk Humidity? Trust me-it’s not bad there. IL area (southern) is horrid! Ocean keeps humidity down. Cornfields however cause massive humidity to the point of having lack of oxygen alerts. I lived in Wilmington. 28 years. Never had IL level humidity.

Back in 1967 or 68 a group of us put bubble bath soap in the fountain at Third and Market;those were the good days in Wimington the way natives say it.

I'm not from NC, but I moved here a few years ago. I did live in the northern part of the state for a few years as a child and was stationed in Jacksonville many years ago. I'm not in Wilmington, but the nearby area. My immediate impression was that it's trying to be a bigger city than what it is. I drive in to Wilmington two or three times per month. The traffic is horrendous, but I'm used to that coming from a much larger city in Virginia. Unfortunately, there's a lot of homeless folks out there and like most places, a big drug problem. I don't hate the city of Wilmington, but I definitely wouldn't want to live there. Much better places in NC. I also understand people who grew up there seem to like it. It's not the worst city I've been to by far, but not great either. It does have a good VA clinic that's under the main VA center in Fayetteville. The things I like about Wilmington are some of its unique stores and landmarks. I understand many movies have been made there, or at least in part. I have a few friends from Wilmington. Like any city, there's plenty of attitude to go around. Many of the streets are very narrow. I guess it's all in what you're looking for. Why I moved out of the city and now enjoy the country life. It's not perfect, but much less stressful than the cities I lived in and grew up in. Hope that didn't come across as insulting, just an outsider view.

Hi William - thanks for your comment and feedback. I am glad you found a place to live that you love and you're right,...no place is perfect. Certainly not Wilmington. It has grown quite a bit over the last few years. Some of the growth has been good, some not so good. I know it has it's issues, like most cities - but I try to look at the positive attributes that Wilmington has to offer. I feel the positives outweigh the negatives. I watch comments all the time that are posted on various social media platforms about the growth in Wilmington and most of the comments are negative and I always wonder.....why do so many people stay here if they dislike it so much....very interesting. But, it sounds like your spot is perfect and just far enough away! :)

I was in Florence and Dorian and also Isiasis while in Wilmington . The flooding there during Florence was the worst since Hazel in 1954 .

Well not sure it was quite that bad - but, yes, we have hurricanes just like most up and down the eastern seaboard....but the we are a strong community and we always rebound after each storm.

Well technically you were correct… If the Azalea festival started in 1948… then the last time it did NOT happen since 2020 was 1947!

Hey Megan! Thanks for checking out my channel. I find parking downtown to be easy....There are several parking decks to choose from and most allow the first hour free. Parking on the street is pay parking of course, but with the PaybyPhone app - it's easy! Lots of trails and parks in the area - my favorite is the Carolina Beach State Park (I have a video on the park in my playlist). Greenfield Park is also a wonderful place to walk with your pets. Downtown is not a safe place anymore and no it is not easy to park and beware when you do your vehicle will be hit they will leave the scene and then you will come to us at body shops and somehow take it out on us

I ended up moving back in with my family because rent is to high and the pay sucks. I ended up getting my cdl and driving cross country.

The "waterbug" disclosure did it for me. Thank you for being candid, Port City Living! I'm assuming waterbugs are only one type of roach, and Wilmington also has the other cockroach cousins, i.e. German roaches and Palmetto bugs? Regardless, this video is great.

Hey Annabelle - thanks for writing in and thanks for the compliment. Since we sit by the ocean, it is a wet climate here for the most part which attracts those critters. And I consider a palmetto bug or water bug to be the same as a roach!! I would recommend having a good exterminator and you are all set. I have one and I never have an issue with those pesky visitors! :)

@@PortCityLivingNC of a truth! We used Terminix religiously. They also helped with the rats. Black rats actually climb trees.

The traffic gives me so much anxiety I really hate it. So much so that I plan on leaving after I develop my career a little longer. It's a nice area but driving around is so stressful to the point where I don't want to go out.

Hey Gubert - I am sorry that you get anxiety when you drive in Wilmington. I have found that if I just go at my own pace and let everyone just go around, I handle it much better. Some days I get out there and there is hardly any traffic....very odd. Im sorry to hear that you may leave the area after you develop your career, but I totally understand. Until then, drive safely!!

i grew up here..i used to love it..its changed..A LOT, and not always for the best in my opinion. 41 years old. also BERTHA 1996..it was significant for us north side of town at least i was kinda young. 14 i think went without power for probably 2 weeks. good video though man, keep it up.

I’m a native of Wilmington my family has been in wily since the 1800’s. I’m trying my hardest to get away from Wilmington. It’s not the same it’s starting to get over populated in my opinion.

Oh wow - that's awesome that you have roots that far back! I hate to hear you trying to leave the area. Wilmington is growing quite a bit, but unfortunately is inevitable. Popular areas always evolve and change. But, I trust that it's growing in the right direction. Other suburban areas will be more popular like Rocky Point, Burgaw, Castle Hayne as like Leland has gotten popular. Good luck no matter where you end up Brandon!!

Hi Diana - thanks for your comment. So funny that you ask this, because I am in the process of working on a video about the cost of living. But until then I can give you some idea of what it cost to live in Wilmington. Average 2 bed apartment is around $1400 - home can rent from $1200 for a smaller home to over $3000 for a large 3/4 bedroom home. It just depends on the area. Jobs are a tough one. As you may be aware, Wilmington is a college town, a resort town and a retirement community....so there are plenty of service jobs. Not a lot of middle management type jobs here in the Wilmington Area. I hope this helps and stay tuned for my video on more info about this topic!

Way more than it should be

I live in Hampstead and pay more for water and sewer here than I did in atl or dc 82.50 for sewer thanks to shitty Pluris 40$ just to have my *commercial irrigation line on then running 3 zones 16 minutes 8-4-4 3 days a week with rain gauge it’s about 150-200$ and home is 24.95 just to be on and we never go over the 10k gallons first use Home isn’t the issue it’s the sewer and commercial line for irrigation that they technically can’t cut off by federal law if it’s commercial

I will only visit. I don’t like bugs and I heard about those noseema bugs(sp) I don’t want to experience the pain I’ve been told about. My family is from Burgaw. I’ve been a few times. I’m just lucky I’ve never gotten bitten by one.

That bug thing is really scary. I would like to put a birdcage over a backyard if I moved there.

Actually, I was looking at videos about Wilmington because HGTV is doing a sweepstakes to give away a new home there in River Bluffs. Have you hear about it? What do you think it would fetch on the open market? Their estimate of $1,046,535 includes furnishings, so I'm curious about just the house. Thanks!

I'm quite confident that in this market it would definitely get that price with water views. Again, I have not seen it, so not sure what views the home has or where it is in River Bluffs. As a Statistical Analyst since 1985 and Relocation Specialist in the Charlotte area, though Covid may play a very small part in the population shift in America at the moment, the overwhelming reason is the social and political problems that the west coast and northeast is and has been experiencing. Population data, relocation data, election registration data, and net migration data prove this. Climate is not the driving force of the shift, as CA and HI have great climates yet are losing residents at record rates. Cost of living is not the top concern, because IL and NM are affordable and they’re losing population. What they all have in common, and the numbers make it undeniable, is nearly all red states are flourishing and nearly all blue states are suffering. Too, the red states have become more red and blue states more blue per the 2020-2022 census data, voter registration data, and midterm election results. I am really sorry that this is a political post. But it is important to know that using Covid as the reason doesn’t give the actual story. I know that it’s a reason some give, but the hard data simply doesn’t back it up. I also have no had one single client even mention Covid, other than saying they hated the overreaching mandates in their previous states. Yes, one can have more flexible relocation options when working remotely, which the Covid scare created. But it’s not THE reason people area leaving. Nevertheless, the video was very good. It’s be cool to see a video about Wilmington as a metro area (New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender Counties), as most of my clients do not want to live IN the central city but do want to live near it with a suburban or rural feel. I really love the Wilmington area. I have tons of friends and family in the area. I visit my uncle in Carolina Beach about once a month. I highly recommend the metro area, as it ranking in the top 25% of American metro areas in my 2020 rankings that I do every 5 years.

Next time visit the point off 17th st extension. There's the best Mexican restaurant there called zocalos

@@PortCityLivingNC hello I too was born in Burgaw. I worked in Wilmington for many years. Specifically at the chemical plant on Hwy 421. The smell comes from the Fortron plant it smells like cat urine. When the wind blows in certain directions it can be smelled for miles away. Still love Wilmington it’s a beautiful place to live.

As Southerners we are very welcoming people. What we resent is people moving here not realizing how very different that it is. This is not a metropolitan area and it never will be our thing is if you move here don't try to be the president of an HOA embrace the fact that we do not work on weekends and we shouldn't. It is an insult to our intelligence because people with money to spare treat us as though we're just plan stupid and we're not. Traffic is terrible people blow their horns all the time this is something that we don't do. I'm a female in the automotive industry in my 40th year. It seems to me that newcomers don't pay attention to speed limit signs. All we want is to see you embrace your new surroundings not to try to change them which to me begs the question isn't that why you moved here in the first place? We never had to pay to park at the beach before but we do now, hell smokers don't even have a place to have a nice meal outside where we used to be able to smoke we can't even do that anymore. It takes 40 minutes to drive 14 miles it never was that way before. We could leave our doors unlocked that's gone too. What we see is all of a sudden we need car washes apartment buildings storage facilities. We simply just don't have the infrastructure and none of the surrounding counties are willing to do it either that should say something. We don't have the schools. There's no room left

HI Jacob - I was born in Burgaw, but lived most of my life in Wilmington and I I say I am from Wilmington, because most don't know where Burgaw is. Burgaw is a bedroom community of Wilmington. Hope that helps!
