Living in "Tent City 3" - Homeless Encampment in Seattle

I live in Downtown Seattle so homelessness is something I see every day. I wanted to meet these neighbors of mine. So I got in touch with the leaders of Tent City 3 which had recently moved into a space not far from where I live.
This video is the stories of 3 people I met on that rainy day that I spent at Tent City 3. This is their story, not mine I tried to stay out of the way and let Candi, Brandon, and Alonzo tell their stories.
So this is me getting to know my neighbors my fellow Kinetic Villagers. I hope it challenges you to get to know your neighbors and not just walk by.
Here are some links to Homeless service agencies in Seattle. I will add more as you suggest them and I will gladly add links to services in your neighborhood too just comment below.

I used to be uneducated on this topic. I had those negative views. But the older I get, the more I learn how wrong my views were. When I worked as a garbage man I started meeting people who were living in all kinds of different situations. Talking with people in rough area's on my breaks really opened my eyes. Hearing about people losing their jobs then losing everything. People who were abused as kids and now suffer from mental health problems. Everyone has a story, and it isn't that they are or were lazy. Please don't judge people based on their situations.

I work occasionally for for an owner of an 18 unit apartment in Fremont, one day he jokingly said I think I'm going to raise the rent on her. He was referring to a hairdresser whom had been in her apartment for over ten years, then he said I could get such and such from a techie, which of course is true afterall the other occupants in his building do pay the higher price. Who could blame him, he bought that building for profit...turns out he isn't a cruel man and she still lives there and it is now 2 years since he made those comments. Those of us working low paying jobs, while admirable are at the mercy of those with money and power, makes no sense to price the hairdressers, burger flippers etc out of the rental market.

I have donated clothes and toiletries when tent city came to a Lake City Church a couple of years ago. I will never forget the smile on this old mans face as I dropped off the stuff' No words were needed from him, but as I drove away, the smile on that mans face broke me. Peace and Love

I took off to the woods with a tent and a bank account and volunteered at a church soup kitchen . I quit work for a year and got my head together. I make damn good money and now back to your regular life and let me tell you, I would rather be with these people than people like you because they are real and you know where they come from. To see a world that has a blanket on it for which I never seen was the best experience of my life and I think about going back all the time.

What is being done to fix the homelessness problem? I know what is being done to make the homeless more comfortable while they are homeless. What are we willing to do to fix the problem? We talk about the problem, we make videos showing the homeless, we make money off of the homeless being homeless but we are not helping the homeless at all. We are enabling the homeless to stay that way. So again, what are we willing to do to fix the problem. . . I want to run for mayor of Seattle in 2021 and every election after that till Seattle is homeless free. I am not down on the homeless as I was homeless for about 10 years when I was younger. I have good insight into what causes homelessness and how to stop the home less from becoming homeless. My online name is Pauper's Budget because I am thrifty but my actual name is Tim Jenkins and I will be running for mayor of Seattle in 2021. . . Just a side note, I also plan on working on bringing the coast of living down and also make rents more affordable. I have a plan that will put rental properties into three categories. I have videos I have done that is just me talking and such but I will be from now on talking about what my plans are for the betterment of Seattle and everyone who lives in the Beautiful City of Seattle. . . Thank you

Safe yourself the time, effort, and frustration of running for mayor in 2021. It's all about the numbers. You WON'T have the support from the people that matter. ( Ones with $$$ M O N E Y $$$ ) Thank God that CAPITALISM still reigns, nothing in life is FREE. There is a misconception that everyone is suppose to own a home, and also have a FREE college education. N O T ! ! ! The majority numbers of people supporting the homeless agenda, are themselves either homeless, have been homeless, or are POOR financially. The first part of the solution, doesn't fall under being " POLITICALLY CORRECT " We are all too caught up in not hurting peoples feelings. However, I would FORCE them to (1) Live sober (2) Clean-up themselves, and camp (3) Gain A N Y type of employment (4) Pool their money together with 3 - 4 individuals (5) Live within their means, ( NO dogs, cell phones, laptops) (6) Be accountable/transparent. When they gain employment, be the HARDEST worker. Be RELIABLE, be an asset to their employer. On weekends go to the library for two hours, and further their education. Quit accepting failure, as a lifestyle. Also STOP living where you can't afford rent. Like SF * Seattle * Portland * LV * NY * LA * ... Move to North Dakota and you can own a home in 10-yrs. Problem S O L V E D ! ! ! LOL... I wish it were that easy. Hahahahahahaha

Why bring a child into such poverty? At minimum they should practice some type of birth control, it is cruel to have a baby living in such poverty. I should know because I was born to an abusive dad. He beat me up till he left when I was 13. I grew up on Welfare food...Peanut Butter, canned meat, potatoes, powdered milk...I only had one pair of pants to wear to school. It was not an easy childhood. I did have a house to live in....sometimes without heat or electriciy. I had a brother and sister, and I remember when there were no presents under the tree, and we had no food to eat. I remember like yesterday, mom crying on Christmas Eve because we had nothing. No way to raise kids. I did not have it easy in High School....then got into drugs. The best thing for somebody suffering in such poverty is to NOT have children. If you’re going to suffer because you have no education, no job, no prospects....don’t bring a baby into this world. Don’t be so selfish. Would I want to do it again? HELL NO!

Kinetic Village Looking back at it...I don’t know how I survived. One day, I almost lost my mind...taking LSD, Coke, Mescaline, with Weed...I was really tripping out. I went to a 7-11 to play Asteroids...I don’t know how I played it, but trying to focus on the game saved me from going crazy. The thing is...you have to forgive. In the depths of your soul, I forgave everyone that hurt me and I ask forgiveness to everyone I’ve ever hurt. I found out that my dad died alone in a hospital. He had a hole in his throat to breath, because he had smoked too much. He moved to California, had a kid that he abused there. I found out that I have a half-brother, but never contacted him. Even though you can forgive somebody, you don’t want to have to re- live it in memory. What has happened is in the past...all we have is the moment. We all need to count our blessings...remembering, whatever the situation....things could ALWAYS be worse! Dave

Good observation and thanks for noticing her I hope she is doing better and has someone to talk to. I actually did talk to her as well. It was a tough story and she was hesitant but did open up a little but ultimately not something I could share on this platform. It was pouring rain and cold that day so many reasons for her be off. Keep her in your thoughts.

I feel their families should 1st be financially responsible for them. If they have no family and it should be investigated then they should be classified as homeless financial wards of whatever state they reside. A contract should be written up with parameters in place that they must sign. No more free money!!! We should assist but all homeless people are not the same and we need to determine that appropriately. Some are homeless due to circumstances outside their control and most of those cases if we get them back on their feet they could sustain themselves without our help ongoing. Others are homeless because of things they are doing and/or choices they've made addictions, irresponsible, etc. We should for a determined length of time. The majority of these homeless people you could get them on their feet 100 times and they will likely need help again. We cannot afford to take care of people FOREVER!!!!. We cannot afford that AND WE NEED TO STOP ATTEMPTING IT!!! (We) did not bring them into the world it is not our job to financially take care of them and nowhere in the US Constitution does it say that ANYWHERE!!!! We need money constantly coming in from everyone who is using it. EVERYONE WHO IS USING IT! If you had a bank account with $1000.00 in it eventually. it is going to be empty if you do not put anything back in. I think some people thing America just has money to burn. Some people has more than others YES. But that is there money they have the right to do with it what they will and are not obligated to give it to homeless people or anyone with less. I was watching that series "The Men Who Built America" about Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford and they gave away most of their money but I do not recall them giving it to the homeless. Most of educational charities....it reminds me of that Chinese proverb "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

He's delusional if he thinks he going to be in an apartment and saving money when he gets SSI. It's barely enough to cover the basics and eat out daily. Paying rent is out of the question, especially in Southern California where I am currently homeless. Maybe rent is a bit cheaper up in WA but there will be nothing left after rent.

Individual or group charity, which is charity only if it is voluntary, has no limits, but governments should stay out of the business of religion and only enforce the respect for the sovereign rights of all individuals. There is a homeless problem, also a too many homeless problem that 100% of the people have, something that deserves consideration since it is everyone (news flash: homelessness isn't a plus, less is better. Latest poll: 100% of people would rather have less homeless, never more). Preach the good all you want, and bless you, but when the government is lobbied by special interests by especially those who think unlimited amounts of other peoples money, safety, and health is expendable on those not all of which are particularly deserving, the government must not listen to those, but to the wisdom of all the people. All the people say LESS is the only measured goal of success at a price they approve of. The neighbors you mention all seem to have come from somewhere else to be in Seattle just to be homeless there. Do you ask yourself why?

I am glad that these people are running these camps themselves and from what it appears, make a good job of it. Having a secure place where drinking and drug use is not allowed provides these people with a secure place to live and hopefully regain some form of independence. I've also seen camps where they set up "tiny homes" which I think is also a good idea. There is so much land on this earth that can be used in a sustainable fashion by folks like these. Of course the issue of mental health is a big component in this. We cannot ignore the challenges these people face because it doesn't take much to lose everything in the system we currently live in. Now, I am not anti-capitalist, but the system needs to adapt to serve an ever growing, and in some countries, ever aging population. Proper nutrition, or the lack thereof, as well as education is an important factor too.

Seattle where majority of people commute to work. Most people with 9-5 can't live in best part. THEY COMMUTE. Trying to put affordable housing in the most expensive real estate area of the city is not only draining cost but stupid. MOST OF US WITH A JOB CAN"T EVEN LIVE HERE what did you guys expect? 200 dollar a month you can share house with someone outside of city limit. Live in the most expensive part.... Seattle spent almost 20k per person last year for homeless. They gave money to organization that had ceo with salaries in 700k " non profit", CITY could have build tiny community outside of expensive real estate and buy each a tiny home. But instead trying to fight over tiny land that most of us can't even afford to live in is ridiculous.

I am not an expert on this topic but I just wanted to share what I saw spending some time with these people. One thing I have come to understand about what you shared is that if you were to put up housing for the homeless outside the city you separate them from the job market creating a transportation issue along with it. It's complicated how to create diversity and opportunity for people who need it. I choose to listen and learn and then speak up in ways that I believe will best progress our city forward for all people.
