I love your take and passion for San Jose, and I agree with most of the pros and cons. I was born and raised in SJ, and yes, it's super expensive to live here, but San Jose is quite unique and worth the cost of living if you can make it work. I know you mentioned the different foods SJ offers, but I would say that a huge pro in San Jose is the variety of Mexican food it has to offer (many great restaurants and food trucks). If you need any recommendations, feel free to ask! Great video!

The food is amazing. The weather is outstanding, if not a bit "boring." Proximity to beaches, the Central Coast, the mountains, etc. is perfect. Crime, vagrancy (homeless) and dirty streets unfortunately outweigh those pros. I'm not sure there are any actually "safe" neighborhoods anymore. Ours used to be, but the sidewalks are blocked with tents and the streets are clogged with derelict RVs. Parking anywhere other than your garage is asking for your window to be broken and your catalytic converter to be taken. The trails you mentioned now have homeless blocking them. I remember teaching my kids to ride bikes on those trails when they were clean. It's really a shame.

I appreciate you reaching out. My first suggestion would be to have a good idea of where you are staying and transportation. If you don’t have a vehicle that shouldn’t be a problem with Uber and rideshares, it will be best to at minimum have an idea. San Jose can be and feel widespread and our public transportation is not up to speed with all of the UK. If you are flying into San Francisco or Oakland vs San Jose that can make a big difference as well for timing. If I think of anything else I will let you know. If you have more specific questions please feel free to let me know.

Born and raised in San Jose and live in the heart of JAPAN town where I lived for roughly 10 years on the 3rd floor of the white building as shown at 3:57, as for the Food there in JAPAN town it's no where close to what it used to be, Long gone is Ginza which was a few doors down from where I lived and the other way just before 4th street was NOBOs there the cook many times would cook me special meals, sad to say these 2 restaurants are long gone. On 6th street I think Okayama Gardens is still there but the food is not as good as it used to be. Santos Market on 6th and Taylor street will have one of the BEST HAWAIIAN POKI BOWLS around, I think the POKI there is on par or better than what I have had in HAWAII. On another note: I was there and saw the fall of the farms and orchards only to see the rise of SILICON Valley, out door activities the best for me was riding my bicycle over the GAP, HWY 9 from Saratoga to Santa Cruz or over Mt Hamilton then drop into Sunol, we also used to head north to the Palo Alto area then over the hill to the coast and catch the tail wind all the way down to Santa Cruz, then over 9 for the ride back into the Pit! Sorry to say, we've been calling San Jose the PIT for well over 40 years. Just my 2 cents.

Cecile Corpuz - I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts, memories and great experiences it was nice reading about it. When the cook makes you special meals you know you are not only a local but a depended on regular! There are a lot of avid bicyclists in San Jose and surrounding areas as well I appreciate that part of what you wrote. That is certainly a very good point, if someone is new to the area and enjoys riding that is a great way to meet people.

May be relocating to San Jose for work...currently living in SoCal (Marina Del Rey / Santa Monica). My biggest concern....walkability. SJ doesn't seem to score very well with minimal neighborhoods providing walking access to restaurants, bars, shopping, nightlife, etc. Any insights? I would consider living in SF, but from what I've read, BART and other public transportation isn't the most convenient where you're talking about a daily journey back and forth. Would appreciate any info...maybe the info I'm reading is outdated or there's some new "hipper" neighborhoods for what I'm looking.

Hi gatlboye, I appreciate you asking this question. It does appear to be limited however once you dive in you may be surprised. Depending on your budget there are many areas with walk ability. Downtown San Jose will get you to a lot of restaurants with a short walk. If you want to stay in SJ I would also look at Willow Glen and once you get around the area you will see that even some seemingly more remote areas are more walk able once you are there. I would also look at Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Morgan Hill, Redwood City. Please let me know your thoughts.e

You need to contact your international student council for advise on accomodation, financial requirements etc.. housing areas near SJSU are sub-standard and not the safest compared to other Universities mentioned above. A Black family was burned out of their home in San Francisco recently after years of putting up with racist harassment. White progressives are fine with people of color if you don’t challenge their privileged position and world view. You see progressives’ real side when people of color demand a seat at the table and not just putting up with progressives’ “savior mentality.” Silicon Valley is no model of diversity, especially when the tech industry treats their diversity numbers as “trade secrets” because of their pathetic numbers.
