I lived in Samoa 40 years ago. The Samoa you described is pretty much the Samoa I experienced. It's interesting how things haven't changed all that much.

I met a Samoan for the first time ever while stationed in Korea back in 1988-89 (Camp Stanley - U.S. Army). We were in the same Platoon. He was built like a tank but was a Gentle Jiant. He was one of the nicest, humbled, and hard working person I'd ever met. He could cook food that would make you eat your fingertips off!! He was such a good spirited person that would give you the shirt off his back. That was the first time I'd seen a pig cooked in the ground. I remember thinking, "where the hell did he get a hole pig from?" Needless to say, it tasted Amazing!! The only thing with him was you couldn't let him drank to much Beer. If so, you had a BIG problem on your hands 🤣. He would get a little rowdy, actually we all did; nothing bad, but you stayed out his way! Again, he was a freaking Tank! I will NEVER forget him. I wish I knew where he was, I'd love to see him again - I don't remember his name. Thank you for bringing back fond memories of my first experience with a Samoan Native. They are Amazing people that are enriched in culture!

Well done, and again thank you. G.B

My cousins tease me all the time because I would sneak food to the dogs. I would save leftovers and ask them to pull over so I could feed them. I learned not to feed them near the hotel. Poor babies. Then when they found out I have 2 house dogs they were like, “What? You let them on your bed? Ew!” I would then have to explain that they take baths too, go to the vet, get groomed, etc. lol

Pa (explode) + lagi (heaven) = Palagi (Exploding Heaven). This goes back to a story of white doves (white sails of ships) coming from the horizon, heaven (lagi), shooting their cannons (exploding) on villages and the natives. It is not a term to describe the Angels descending from heaven, but more of a terror on the horizon.
